The LORD, the Mighty One, is God, and he has spoken; he has summoned all humanity from where the sun rises to where it sets.1A psalm by Asaph. El, God, the LORD speaks, and summons the earth to come from the east and west.
From Mount Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines in glorious radiance.2From Zion, the most beautiful of all places, God comes in splendor.
Our God approaches, and he is not silent. Fire devours everything in his way, and a great storm rages around him.3Our God approaches and is not silent; consuming fire goes ahead of him and all around him a storm rages.
He calls on the heavens above and earth below to witness the judgment of his people.4He summons the heavens above, as well as the earth, so that he might judge his people.
“Bring my faithful people to me— those who made a covenant with me by giving sacrifices.”5He says: "Assemble my covenant people before me, those who ratified a covenant with me by sacrifice!"
Then let the heavens proclaim his justice, for God himself will be the judge. Interlude6The heavens declare his fairness, for God is judge. (Selah)
“O my people, listen as I speak. Here are my charges against you, O Israel: I am God, your God!7He says: "Listen my people! I am speaking! Listen Israel! I am accusing you! I am God, your God!
I have no complaint about your sacrifices or the burnt offerings you constantly offer.8I am not condemning you because of your sacrifices, or because of your burnt sacrifices that you continually offer me.
But I do not need the bulls from your barns or the goats from your pens.9I do not need to take a bull from your household or goats from your sheepfolds.
For all the animals of the forest are mine, and I own the cattle on a thousand hills.10For every wild animal in the forest belongs to me, as well as the cattle that graze on a thousand hills.
I know every bird on the mountains, and all the animals of the field are mine.11I keep track of every bird in the hills, and the insects of the field are mine.
If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for all the world is mine and everything in it.12Even if I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world and all it contains belong to me.
Do I eat the meat of bulls? Do I drink the blood of goats?13Do I eat the flesh of bulls? Do I drink the blood of goats?
Make thankfulness your sacrifice to God, and keep the vows you made to the Most High.14Present to God a thank-offering! Repay your vows to the sovereign One!
Then call on me when you are in trouble, and I will rescue you, and you will give me glory.”15Pray to me when you are in trouble! I will deliver you, and you will honor me!"
But God says to the wicked: “Why bother reciting my decrees and pretending to obey my covenant?16God says this to the evildoer: "How can you declare my commands, and talk about my covenant?
For you refuse my discipline and treat my words like trash.17For you hate instruction and reject my words.
When you see thieves, you approve of them, and you spend your time with adulterers.18When you see a thief, you join him; you associate with men who are unfaithful to their wives.
Your mouth is filled with wickedness, and your tongue is full of lies.19You do damage with words, and use your tongue to deceive.
You sit around and slander your brother— your own mother’s son.20You plot against your brother; you slander your own brother.
While you did all this, I remained silent, and you thought I didn’t care. But now I will rebuke you, listing all my charges against you.21When you did these things, I was silent, so you thought I was exactly like you. But now I will condemn you and state my case against you!
Repent, all of you who forget me, or I will tear you apart, and no one will help you.22Carefully consider this, you who reject God! Otherwise I will rip you to shreds and no one will be able to rescue you.
But giving thanks is a sacrifice that truly honors me. If you keep to my path, I will reveal to you the salvation of God.”23Whoever presents a thank-offering honors me. To whoever obeys my commands, I will reveal my power to deliver."
