| 1Sing praises to God, our strength. Sing to the God of Jacob. | 1For the music director; according to the gittith style; by Asaph. Shout for joy to God, our source of strength! Shout out to the God of Jacob! |
| 2Sing! Beat the tambourine. Play the sweet lyre and the harp. | 2Sing a song and play the tambourine, the pleasant sounding harp, and the ten-stringed instrument! |
| 3Blow the ram’s horn at new moon, and again at full moon to call a festival! | 3Sound the ram's horn on the day of the new moon, and on the day of the full moon when our festival begins. |
| 4For this is required by the decrees of Israel; it is a regulation of the God of Jacob. | 4For observing the festival is a requirement for Israel; it is an ordinance given by the God of Jacob. |
| 5He made it a law for Israel when he attacked Egypt to set us free. I heard an unknown voice say, | 5He decreed it as a regulation in Joseph, when he attacked the land of Egypt. I heard a voice I did not recognize. |
| 6“Now I will take the load from your shoulders; I will free your hands from their heavy tasks. | 6It said: "I removed the burden from his shoulder; his hands were released from holding the basket. |
| 7You cried to me in trouble, and I saved you; I answered out of the thundercloud and tested your faith when there was no water at Meribah. Interlude | 7In your distress you called out and I rescued you. I answered you from a dark thundercloud. I tested you at the waters of Meribah. (Selah) |
| 8“Listen to me, O my people, while I give you stern warnings. O Israel, if you would only listen to me! | 8I said, 'Listen, my people! I will warn you! O Israel, if only you would obey me! |
| 9You must never have a foreign god; you must not bow down before a false god. | 9There must be no other god among you. You must not worship a foreign god. |
| 10For it was I, the LORD your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt. Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it with good things. | 10I am the LORD, your God, the one who brought you out of the land of Egypt. Open your mouth wide and I will fill it!' |
| 11“But no, my people wouldn’t listen. Israel did not want me around. | 11But my people did not obey me; Israel did not submit to me. |
| 12So I let them follow their own stubborn desires, living according to their own ideas. | 12I gave them over to their stubborn desires; they did what seemed right to them. |
| 13Oh, that my people would listen to me! Oh, that Israel would follow me, walking in my paths! | 13If only my people would obey me! If only Israel would keep my commands! |
| 14How quickly I would then subdue their enemies! How soon my hands would be upon their foes! | 14Then I would quickly subdue their enemies, and attack their adversaries." |
| 15Those who hate the LORD would cringe before him; they would be doomed forever. | 15(May those who hate the LORD cower in fear before him! May they be permanently humiliated!) |
| 16But I would feed you with the finest wheat. I would satisfy you with wild honey from the rock.” | 16"I would feed Israel the best wheat, and would satisfy your appetite with honey from the rocky cliffs." |
