New Living TranslationNew International Version
While Jesus was in the Temple, he watched the rich people dropping their gifts in the collection box.1As Jesus looked up, he saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury.
Then a poor widow came by and dropped in two small coins.2He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins.
“I tell you the truth,” Jesus said, “this poor widow has given more than all the rest of them.3"Truly I tell you," he said, "this poor widow has put in more than all the others.
For they have given a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she has.” Jesus Speaks about the Future4All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on."
Some of his disciples began talking about the majestic stonework of the Temple and the memorial decorations on the walls. But Jesus said,5Some of his disciples were remarking about how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God. But Jesus said,
“The time is coming when all these things will be completely demolished. Not one stone will be left on top of another!”6"As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another; every one of them will be thrown down."
“Teacher,” they asked, “when will all this happen? What sign will show us that these things are about to take place?”7"Teacher," they asked, "when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?"
He replied, “Don’t let anyone mislead you, for many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and saying, ‘The time has come!’ But don’t believe them.8He replied: "Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am he,' and, 'The time is near.' Do not follow them.
And when you hear of wars and insurrections, don’t panic. Yes, these things must take place first, but the end won’t follow immediately.”9When you hear of wars and uprisings, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away."
Then he added, “Nation will go to war against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.10Then he said to them: "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.
There will be great earthquakes, and there will be famines and plagues in many lands, and there will be terrifying things and great miraculous signs from heaven.11There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.
“But before all this occurs, there will be a time of great persecution. You will be dragged into synagogues and prisons, and you will stand trial before kings and governors because you are my followers.12"But before all this, they will seize you and persecute you. They will hand you over to synagogues and put you in prison, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name.
But this will be your opportunity to tell them about me.13And so you will bear testimony to me.
So don’t worry in advance about how to answer the charges against you,14But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves.
for I will give you the right words and such wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to reply or refute you!15For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict.
Even those closest to you—your parents, brothers, relatives, and friends—will betray you. They will even kill some of you.16You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers and sisters, relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death.
And everyone will hate you because you are my followers.17Everyone will hate you because of me.
But not a hair of your head will perish!18But not a hair of your head will perish.
By standing firm, you will win your souls.19Stand firm, and you will win life.
“And when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then you will know that the time of its destruction has arrived.20"When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies, you will know that its desolation is near.
Then those in Judea must flee to the hills. Those in Jerusalem must get out, and those out in the country should not return to the city.21Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country not enter the city.
For those will be days of God’s vengeance, and the prophetic words of the Scriptures will be fulfilled.22For this is the time of punishment in fulfillment of all that has been written.
How terrible it will be for pregnant women and for nursing mothers in those days. For there will be disaster in the land and great anger against this people.23How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people.
They will be killed by the sword or sent away as captives to all the nations of the world. And Jerusalem will be trampled down by the Gentiles until the period of the Gentiles comes to an end.24They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.
“And there will be strange signs in the sun, moon, and stars. And here on earth the nations will be in turmoil, perplexed by the roaring seas and strange tides.25"There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea.
People will be terrified at what they see coming upon the earth, for the powers in the heavens will be shaken.26People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken.
Then everyone will see the Son of Man coming on a cloud with power and great glory.27At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.
So when all these things begin to happen, stand and look up, for your salvation is near!”28When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near."
Then he gave them this illustration: “Notice the fig tree, or any other tree.29He told them this parable: "Look at the fig tree and all the trees.
When the leaves come out, you know without being told that summer is near.30When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near.
In the same way, when you see all these things taking place, you can know that the Kingdom of God is near.31Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near.
I tell you the truth, this generation will not pass from the scene until all these things have taken place.32"Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.
Heaven and earth will disappear, but my words will never disappear.33Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.
“Watch out! Don’t let your hearts be dulled by carousing and drunkenness, and by the worries of this life. Don’t let that day catch you unaware,34"Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you suddenly like a trap.
like a trap. For that day will come upon everyone living on the earth.35For it will come on all those who live on the face of the whole earth.
Keep alert at all times. And pray that you might be strong enough to escape these coming horrors and stand before the Son of Man.”36Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man."
Every day Jesus went to the Temple to teach, and each evening he returned to spend the night on the Mount of Olives.37Each day Jesus was teaching at the temple, and each evening he went out to spend the night on the hill called the Mount of Olives,
The crowds gathered at the Temple early each morning to hear him.38and all the people came early in the morning to hear him at the temple.
