1 Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai, saying, Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, Now the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, The word of the LORD came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, The word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai:
2 “Get up! Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before Me.” “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it, for their evil has come up before me.” Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me. “Arise, go to Nineveh, the great city, and cry out against it, because their wickedness has come up before Me.” “Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.”
3 Jonah, however, got up to flee to Tarshish, away from the presence of the LORD. He went down to Joppa and found a ship bound for Tarshish. So he paid the fare and went aboard to sail for Tarshish, away from the presence of the LORD. But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish. So he paid the fare and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the LORD. But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD. But Jonah got up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD. So he went down to Joppa, found a ship that was going to Tarshish, paid the fare, and boarded it to go with them to Tarshish away from the presence of the LORD. But Jonah ran away from the LORD and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the LORD.
4 Then the LORD hurled a great wind upon the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship was in danger of breaking apart. But the LORD hurled a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship threatened to break up. But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken. However, the LORD hurled a great wind on the sea and there was a great storm on the sea, so that the ship was about to break up. Then the LORD sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up.
5 The sailors were afraid, and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the ship’s cargo into the sea to lighten the load. But Jonah had gone down to the lowest part of the vessel, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep. Then the mariners were afraid, and each cried out to his god. And they hurled the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten it for them. But Jonah had gone down into the inner part of the ship and had lain down and was fast asleep. Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the wares that <i>were</i> in the ship into the sea, to lighten <i>it</i> of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep. Then the sailors became afraid and every man cried out to his god, and they hurled the cargo which was in the ship into the sea to lighten <i>it</i> for them. But Jonah had gone below into the stern of the ship, had lain down, and fallen sound asleep. All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep.
6 The captain approached him and said, “How can you sleep? Get up and call upon your God. Perhaps this God will consider us, so that we may not perish.” So the captain came and said to him, “What do you mean, you sleeper? Arise, call out to your god! Perhaps the god will give a thought to us, that we may not perish.” So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not. So the captain approached him and said, “How is it that you are sleeping? Get up, call on your god! Perhaps <i>your</i> god will be concerned about us so that we will not perish.” The captain went to him and said, “How can you sleep? Get up and call on your god! Maybe he will take notice of us so that we will not perish.”
7 “Come!” said the sailors to one another. “Let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity that is upon us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah. And they said to one another, “Come, let us cast lots, that we may know on whose account this evil has come upon us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah. And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil <i>is</i> upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah. And each man said to his mate, “Come, let’s cast lots so that we may find out on whose account this catastrophe <i>has struck</i> us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah. Then the sailors said to each other, “Come, let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity.” They cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah.
8 “Tell us now,” they demanded, “who is to blame for this calamity that is upon us? What is your occupation, and where have you come from? What is your country, and who are your people?” Then they said to him, “Tell us on whose account this evil has come upon us. What is your occupation? And where do you come from? What is your country? And of what people are you?” Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil <i>is</i> upon us; What <i>is</i> thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what <i>is</i> thy country? and of what people <i>art</i> thou? Then they said to him, “Tell us, now! On whose account <i>has</i> this catastrophe <i>struck</i> us? What is your occupation, and where do you come from? What is your country, and from what people are you?” So they asked him, “Tell us, who is responsible for making all this trouble for us? What kind of work do you do? Where do you come from? What is your country? From what people are you?”
9 “I am a Hebrew,” replied Jonah. “I worship the LORD, the God of the heavens, who made the sea and the dry land.” And he said to them, “I am a Hebrew, and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.” And he said unto them, I <i>am</i> an Hebrew; and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, which hath made the sea and the dry <i>land</i>. So he said to them, “I am a Hebrew, and I fear the LORD God of heaven who made the sea and the dry land.” He answered, “I am a Hebrew and I worship the LORD, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.”
10 Then the men were even more afraid and said to him, “What have you done?” The men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them. Then the men were exceedingly afraid and said to him, “What is this that you have done!” For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them. Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him, Why hast thou done this? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them. Then the men became extremely afraid, and they said to him, “How could you do this?” For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them. This terrified them and they asked, “What have you done?” (They knew he was running away from the LORD, because he had already told them so.)
11 Now the sea was growing worse and worse, so they said to Jonah, “What must we do to you to calm this sea for us?” Then they said to him, “What shall we do to you, that the sea may quiet down for us?” For the sea grew more and more tempestuous. Then said they unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous. So they said to him, “What should we do to you so that the sea will become calm for us?”—for the sea was becoming increasingly stormy. The sea was getting rougher and rougher. So they asked him, “What should we do to you to make the sea calm down for us?”
12 “Pick me up,” he answered, “and cast me into the sea, so it may quiet down for you. For I know that I am to blame for this violent storm that has come upon you.” He said to them, “Pick me up and hurl me into the sea; then the sea will quiet down for you, for I know it is because of me that this great tempest has come upon you.” And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest <i>is</i> upon you. And he said to them, “Pick me up and hurl me into the sea. Then the sea will become calm for you, because I know that on account of me this great storm <i>has come</i> upon you.” “Pick me up and throw me into the sea,” he replied, “and it will become calm. I know that it is my fault that this great storm has come upon you.”
13 Nevertheless, the men rowed hard to get back to dry land, but they could not, for the sea was raging against them more and more. Nevertheless, the men rowed hard to get back to dry land, but they could not, for the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them. Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring <i>it</i> to the land; but they could not: for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous against them. But they could not, for the sea grew even wilder than before.
14 So they cried out to the LORD: “Please, O LORD, do not let us perish on account of this man’s life! Do not charge us with innocent blood! For You, O LORD, have done as You pleased.” Therefore they called out to the LORD, “O LORD, let us not perish for this man’s life, and lay not on us innocent blood, for you, O LORD, have done as it pleased you.” Wherefore they cried unto the LORD, and said, We beseech thee, O LORD, we beseech thee, let us not perish for this man's life, and lay not upon us innocent blood: for thou, O LORD, hast done as it pleased thee. Then they cried out to the LORD and said, “We earnestly pray, O LORD, do not let us perish on account of this man’s life, and do not put innocent blood on us; for You, LORD, have done as You pleased.” Then they cried out to the LORD, “Please, LORD, do not let us die for taking this man’s life. Do not hold us accountable for killing an innocent man, for you, LORD, have done as you pleased.”
15 At this, they picked up Jonah and cast him into the sea, and the raging sea grew calm. So they picked up Jonah and hurled him into the sea, and the sea ceased from its raging. So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her raging. So they picked up Jonah and hurled him into the sea, and the sea stopped its raging. Then they took Jonah and threw him overboard, and the raging sea grew calm.
16 Then the men feared the LORD greatly, and they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows to Him. Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly, and they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made vows. Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice unto the LORD, and made vows. And the LORD designated a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the stomach of the fish for three days and three nights. Now the LORD provided a huge fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
