For Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was bound with chains and shackles, he had broken the chains and been driven by the demon into solitary places.

For Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man.

Jesus confronted the demon with sovereign authority, requiring no ritual, incantation, or assistance. The unclean spirit stood in direct opposition to God’s holiness and to the human dignity for which the man had been created. Jesus’ ministry of deliverance revealed the arrival of God’s kingdom and anticipated His final defeat of Satan and evil.

Many times it had seized him,

The man’s suffering was not occasional or minor, but repeated and devastating. Demonic oppression sought to ruin his life, rob him of self-control, and keep him in misery. Jesus alone could break a bondage that had resisted every human effort.

Others had tried to restrain the man because his condition made him dangerous and uncontrollable. Physical confinement could limit outward actions for a time, but it could not free his mind, body, or soul from demonic power. Human strength and social measures could not accomplish the deliverance that Christ brought.

The demon gave the man unnatural strength, displaying its destructive control over him. The broken restraints exposed the helplessness of those around him and the severity of his captivity. Jesus’ authority proved greater than the power that had shattered every chain.

The demon pushed the man away from his home, community, and ordinary life into desolate regions associated with death and isolation. Evil separates and destroys, but Jesus restores those whom it has cast aside. The deliverance that follows would return the man to soundness, fellowship, and grateful obedience to God.
