The Day of Trouble

For the choirmaster.

The psalm was prepared for use in Israel’s public worship under the direction of the choirmaster, a leader of music in the temple. Its prayer was intended to be voiced by the assembled people, likely on behalf of the king as he faced danger.

Psa 4:1 For the choirmaster. With stringed instruments.…
Psa 5:1 For the choirmaster, to be accompanied by flutes.…
Psa 6:1 For the choirmaster. With stringed instruments,…

A Psalm of David.

David wrote as Israel’s king, warrior, and worshiper of the LORD. The psalm reflects the realities of leadership in a nation often threatened by war and dependent on God’s protection.

Psa 3:1 A Psalm of David, when he fled from his son Absalom.…
Psa 18:1 For the choirmaster. Of David the servant of the LORD…
Psa 51:1 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. When Nathan the prophet…

May the LORD answer you in the day of trouble;

The congregation asks the LORD to hear and deliver the king in a time of crisis. Israel’s security did not ultimately rest in military strength but in the covenant God who ruled over them.

Psa 86:7 In the day of my distress I call on You…
Psa 50:15 “Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you”…
Psa 34:17 The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears;…

may the name of the God of Jacob protect you.

God’s name represents His revealed character, authority, and faithfulness. Calling on the God of Jacob recalls His enduring commitment to the people descended from the patriarch and seeks His protection over their king.

Psa 46:11 The LORD of Hosts is with us; the God of Jacob…
Pro 18:10 The name of the LORD is a strong tower;…
Psa 124:8 Our help is in the name of the LORD, the Maker of heaven…

May He send you help from the sanctuary

Israel looked to the sanctuary as the place where the Lord had set His name and received the sacrifices of His people. In time of battle or distress, the king and nation sought God’s aid, recognizing that victory and deliverance depended on Him rather than military strength. Help from the sanctuary reflects the Lord’s holy and righteous intervention on behalf of those who belong to Him.

Psa 68:35 O God, You are awesome in Your sanctuary;…
Psa 28:2 Hear my cry for mercy when I call to You for help,…
2Sa 22:7 In my distress I called upon the LORD; I cried out…

and sustain you from Zion.

Zion, the hill of Jerusalem where the temple stood, represented God’s chosen dwelling and the center of Israel’s worship. The request is for God to uphold and strengthen His people from the place of His established rule. Their security rested in the Lord’s covenant faithfulness and His power to preserve them.

Psa 134:3 May the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth…
Psa 128:5 May the LORD bless you from Zion, that you may see…
Psa 14:7 Oh, that the salvation of Israel would come from Zion!…

May He remember all your gifts

David prays that God will acknowledge the worshiper’s sacrifices, tithes, and offerings brought in faithful devotion. God’s remembrance reflects His covenant care and His regard for sincere obedience.

Act 10:4 Cornelius stared at him in fear and asked…
Php 4:18 I have all I need and more, now that I have…
Heb 13:16 And do not neglect to do good and to share…

and look favorably on your burnt offerings.

Burnt offerings were wholly consumed on the altar, expressing atonement, consecration, and complete devotion to God. The prayer seeks God’s acceptance of worship offered according to His command, anticipating Christ’s final sacrifice for sin.

Psa 51:19 Then You will delight in righteous sacrifices,…
Lev 1:9 The entrails and legs must be washed with water,…
Gen 8:20-21 Then Noah built an altar to the LORD…

Selah

A pause for reflection on God’s acceptance of faithful worship and His readiness to hear the prayer of His people.

Psa 3:2 Many say of me, “God will not deliver him.” Selah
Psa 62:8 Trust in Him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts…
Hab 3:3 God came from Teman, and the Holy One from Mount Paran.…

May He give you the desires of your heart

David prays that God would grant the godly hopes of the king as he prepares for battle. The heart represents a person’s inner purposes, loyalties, and intentions. Such desires are rightly fulfilled when they are submitted to God’s will and directed toward His honor.

Psa 37:4 Delight yourself in the LORD, and He will give…
Psa 21:2 You have granted his heart’s desire and have not withheld…
Psa 145:19 He fulfills the desires of those who fear Him;…

and make all your plans succeed.

The request concerns the king’s military campaign and the plans made in dependence on the Lord. Israel’s victory would not rest merely on strategy or strength but on God’s favor. The prayer anticipates that God will accomplish His purposes through His anointed king.

Pro 16:3 Commit your works to the LORD and your plans…
Pro 16:9 A man’s heart plans his course, but the LORD determines…
Pro 19:21 Many plans are in a man’s heart, but the purpose…

May we shout for joy at your victory

Israel anticipated the king’s triumph as a victory granted by God for the good of His people. Public celebration acknowledged that success in battle did not rest ultimately on military strength, but on the Lord’s favor and protection.

Psa 118:15 Shouts of joy and salvation resound in the tents…
1Sa 18:6-7 As the troops were returning home after David had killed…
Exo 15:1 Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the LORD:…

and raise a banner in the name of our God.

Banners identified armies and gathered soldiers in battle. Israel’s banner declared its allegiance to the Lord, who alone gave victory and defended His people. The king’s deliverance also foreshadows Christ’s final victory over sin, death, and every enemy.

Isa 62:10 Build it up, build up the highway; clear away the stones;…
Exo 17:15-16 And Moses built an altar and named it The LORD Is My Banner.…
Isa 11:10 On that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner…

May the LORD grant all your petitions.

The congregation prays that God will answer the king’s requests for guidance, protection, and success as he fulfills his appointed role. Their confidence rests in the Lord’s willingness and power to accomplish His purposes through His anointed ruler.

1Sa 1:17 “Go in peace,” Eli replied, “and may the God of Israel…
Psa 21:2 You have granted his heart’s desire and have not withheld…
1Jn 5:14-15 And this is the confidence that we have before Him:…

Now I know that the LORD saves His anointed;

David expresses confidence that God will preserve the king He appointed to lead Israel. The Lord’s care for His anointed king rests on His covenant purpose, and David’s deliverance anticipates the greater victory of Christ, God’s ultimate Anointed One.

Psa 28:8 The LORD is the strength of His people, a stronghold…
Psa 18:50 Great salvation He brings to His king. He shows devotion…
1Sa 2:10 Those who oppose the LORD will be shattered.…

He answers him from His holy heaven

Though God reigns in heaven in perfect holiness and authority, He hears the prayers offered by His people on earth. David’s confidence is grounded in the Lord’s active rule over Israel and His readiness to act for the king.

2Ch 30:27 Then the priests and the Levites stood to bless the people,…
1Ki 8:30 Hear the plea of Your servant and of Your people Israel…
2Ch 7:14 if My people who are called by My name humble themselves…

with the saving power of His right hand.

God’s right hand represents His irresistible strength in judgment, rescue, and victory. The salvation of the king would not come through Israel’s military resources but through the power of the Lord.

Psa 60:5 Respond and save us with Your right hand…
Psa 98:1 A Psalm. Sing to the LORD a new song, for He has done wonders…
Exo 15:6 Your right hand, O LORD, is majestic in power;…

Some trust in chariots

Chariots represented the military strength of powerful nations such as Egypt and Assyria. Their speed, mobility, and force in battle made them symbols of human security and national power.

Isa 31:1 Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help…
Psa 33:17 A horse is a vain hope for salvation; …
Pro 21:31 A horse is prepared for the day of battle,…

and others in horses,

Horses added speed and striking power to an army and required wealth to acquire and maintain. Military resources could appear decisive, yet they remained limited and uncertain.

Hos 14:3 Assyria will not save us, nor will we ride on horses.…
Psa 147:10 He does not delight in the strength of the horse;…
Deu 17:16 But the king must not acquire many horses for himself…

but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.

Israel’s confidence rested in the name of the LORD—His character, authority, power, covenant faithfulness, sovereign power, and ability to save. Human strength may fail, but God remains the sure defense of those who depend on Him.

Psa 124:8 Our help is in the name of the LORD, the Maker of heaven…
Psa 9:10 Those who know Your name trust in You, for You, O LORD,…
Pro 18:10 The name of the LORD is a strong tower;…

They collapse and fall,

Those who place their confidence in chariots, horses, and military strength ultimately fail when God acts. Ancient armies depended heavily on chariots as symbols of power and advantage, yet no weapon or force can secure victory apart from the Lord. Their downfall exposes the limits of human strength and the certainty of God’s judgment.

Psa 27:2-3 When the wicked came upon me to devour my flesh,…
Psa 36:12 There the evildoers lie fallen, thrown down…
Isa 8:15 Many will stumble over these; they will fall and be broken;…

but we rise up and stand firm.

Those who call on the Lord are preserved when their enemies fall. God grants His people stability, courage, and victory, enabling them to remain standing after the conflict has ended.

Mic 7:8 Do not gloat over me, my enemy! Though I have fallen…
Pro 24:16 For though a righteous man may fall seven times,…
Eph 6:13 Therefore take up the full armor of God…

O LORD, save the king.

Israel’s king bore the responsibility of leading God’s people in war, justice, and covenant faithfulness. The nation’s safety was closely connected to the preservation and success of the Lord’s anointed ruler. The petition looks beyond any earthly king to the promised Messiah, the true King who saves His people.

Psa 144:10 Him who gives victory to kings, who frees His servant David…
2Sa 22:51 Great salvation He brings to His king…
Psa 18:50 Great salvation He brings to His king. He shows devotion…

Answer us on the day we call.

The congregation joins the king in seeking the Lord during danger and need. Their confidence rests in God’s covenant faithfulness and His readiness to hear His people when they call upon Him.

Psa 138:3 On the day I called, You answered me; You emboldened me…
Psa 86:7 In the day of my distress I call on You…
Psa 50:15 “Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you”…
