At night I remembered my song;

In the sleepless darkness, Asaph recalled the songs of worship that had once given voice to joy, trust, and God’s faithfulness. Memory became both a comfort and a grief, because former communion with God stood sharply against his present distress. Yet remembered worship preserved evidence that the Lord had not changed.

in my heart I mused,

Asaph turned inward with sober reflection rather than escaping his anguish. The heart, the seat of thought and desire, searched the record of God’s dealings and the condition of his own faith. Such meditation prepared him to move from troubled questions toward renewed confidence in God’s mighty works.

His innermost being diligently sought understanding before God. The questions that follow reveal a believer wrestling with the apparent silence of the Lord, not abandoning Him. Honest searching led Asaph to remember God’s redemption of Israel, especially His power displayed in the exodus.
