David’s Family Grows
(2 Samuel 5:12–16)

1 וַ֠יִּשְׁלַח (And sent) חִירָם (Huram) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) צֹ֥ר (of Tyre) מַלְאָכִים֮ (messengers) אֶל־ (to) דָּוִיד֒ (David), וַעֲצֵ֣י (and trees) אֲרָזִ֔ים (cedar), וְחָרָשֵׁ֣י (and craftsmen) קִ֔יר (of walls), וְחָרָשֵׁ֖י (and craftsmen) עֵצִ֑ים (of wood), לִבְנ֥וֹת (to build) ל֖וֹ (for him) בָּֽיִת׃ (a house). 2 וַיֵּ֣דַע (And knew) דָּוִ֔יד (David) כִּֽי־ (that) הֱכִינ֧וֹ (had established him) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) לְמֶ֖לֶךְ (as king) עַל־ (over) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (Israel), כִּֽי־ (for) נִשֵּׂ֤את (was exalted) לְמַ֙עְלָה֙ (highly) מַלְכוּת֔וֹ (his kingdom) בַּעֲב֖וּר (for the sake) עַמּ֥וֹ (of His people) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃פ (Israel).

3 וַיִּקַּ֨ח (And took) דָּוִ֥יד (David) ע֛וֹד (more) נָשִׁ֖ים (wives) בִּירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (in Jerusalem), וַיּ֧וֹלֶד (and begat) דָּוִ֛יד (David) ע֖וֹד (more) בָּנִ֥ים (sons) וּבָנֽוֹת׃ (and daughters). 4 וְאֵ֙לֶּה֙ (And these are) שְׁמ֣וֹת (the names) הַיְלוּדִ֔ים (of the children) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who) הָיוּ־ (were) ל֖וֹ (unto him) בִּירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (in Jerusalem): שַׁמּ֣וּעַ (Shammua), וְשׁוֹבָ֔ב (and Shobab), נָתָ֖ן (Nathan), וּשְׁלֹמֹֽה׃ (and Solomon), 5 וְיִבְחָ֥ר (and Ibhar), וֶאֱלִישׁ֖וּעַ (and Elishua), וְאֶלְפָּֽלֶט׃ (and Elpelet), 6 וְנֹ֥גַהּ (and Nogah), וְנֶ֖פֶג (and Nepheg), וְיָפִֽיעַ׃ (and Japhia), 7 וֶאֱלִישָׁמָ֥ע (and Elishama), וּבְעֶלְיָדָ֖ע (and Beeliada), וֶאֱלִיפָֽלֶט׃ (and Eliphelet).

Two Victories over the Philistines
(2 Samuel 5:17–25)

8 וַיִּשְׁמְע֣וּ (And heard) פְלִשְׁתִּ֗ים (the Philistines) כִּי־ (that) נִמְשַׁ֨ח (had been anointed) דָּוִ֤יד (David) לְמֶ֙לֶךְ֙ (king) עַל־ (over) כָּל־ (all) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (Israel), וַיַּעֲל֥וּ (and went up) כָל־ (all) פְּלִשְׁתִּ֖ים (the Philistines) לְבַקֵּ֣שׁ (to search for) אֶת־ (-) דָּוִ֑יד (David). וַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע (And heard of it) דָּוִ֔יד (David) וַיֵּצֵ֖א (and went out) לִפְנֵיהֶֽם׃ (before them).

9 וּפְלִשְׁתִּ֖ים (And the Philistines) בָּ֑אוּ (went) וַֽיִּפְשְׁט֖וּ (and made a raid) בְּעֵ֥מֶק (on the Valley) רְפָאִֽים׃ (of Rephaim). 10 וַיִּשְׁאַ֨ל (And inquired) דָּוִ֤יד (David) בֵּאלֹהִים֙ (of God), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), הַאֶֽעֱלֶה֙ (Shall I go up) עַל־ (against) פְּלִשְׁתִּיִּים (the Philistines), וּנְתַתָּ֖ם (and have You given them) בְּיָדִ֑י (into my hand)?

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) ל֤וֹ (to him) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) עֲלֵ֔ה (Go up), וּנְתַתִּ֖ים (and I have given) בְּיָדֶֽךָ׃ (into your hand).

11 וַיַּעֲל֥וּ (And they went up) בְּבַֽעַל־ (to Baal-) פְּרָצִים֮ (perazim), וַיַּכֵּ֣ם (and defeated them) שָׁ֣ם (there) דָּוִיד֒ (David). וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) דָּוִ֔יד (David), פָּרַ֨ץ (Has broken up) הָֽאֱלֹהִ֧ים (God) אֶת־ (-) אוֹיְבַ֛י (my enemies) בְּיָדִ֖י (by my hand) כְּפֶ֣רֶץ (like the breaking up) מָ֑יִם (of waters). עַל־ (Upon) כֵּ֗ן (thus) קָֽרְא֛וּ (they called) שֵֽׁם־ (name) הַמָּק֥וֹם (of the place) הַה֖וּא (that) בַּ֥עַל (Baal-) פְּרָצִֽים׃ (perazim). 12 וַיַּעַזְבוּ־ (And they left) שָׁ֖ם (there) אֶת־ (-) אֱלֹֽהֵיהֶ֑ם (their gods), וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and gave a commandment) דָּוִ֔יד (David), וַיִּשָּׂרְפ֖וּ (and they were burned) בָּאֵֽשׁ׃פ (with the fire).

13 וַיֹּסִ֤יפוּ (And added) עוֹד֙ (again) פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים (the Philistines) וַֽיִּפְשְׁט֖וּ (and to make a raid) בָּעֵֽמֶק׃ (on the valley). 14 וַיִּשְׁאַ֨ל (And inquired) ע֤וֹד (again) דָּוִיד֙ (David) בֵּֽאלֹהִ֔ים (of God), וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (and said) לוֹ֙ (to him) הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים (God), לֹ֥א (Not) תַֽעֲלֶ֖ה (you shall go up) אַֽחֲרֵיהֶ֑ם (after them). הָסֵב֙ (Circle around) מֵֽעֲלֵיהֶ֔ם (them) וּבָ֥אתָ (and come) לָהֶ֖ם (upon them) מִמּ֥וּל (in front of) הַבְּכָאִֽים׃ (the balsam trees). 15 וִ֠יהִי (And it shall be), כְּֽשָׁמְעֲךָ֞ (when you hear) אֶת־ (-) ק֤וֹל (a sound) הַצְּעָדָה֙ (of the marching) בְּרָאשֵׁ֣י (in the tops) הַבְּכָאִ֔ים (of the balsam trees), אָ֖ז (then) תֵּצֵ֣א (you shall go out) בַמִּלְחָמָ֑ה (to battle), כִּֽי־ (for) יָצָ֤א (has gone out) הָֽאֱלֹהִים֙ (God) לְפָנֶ֔יךָ (before you) לְהַכּ֖וֹת (to strike) אֶת־ (-) מַחֲנֵ֥ה (the camp) פְלִשְׁתִּֽים׃ (of the Philistines).

16 וַיַּ֣עַשׂ (And did) דָּוִ֔יד (David) כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֥ר (as) צִוָּ֖הוּ (had commanded him) הָֽאֱלֹהִ֑ים (God), וַיַּכּוּ֙ (and they drove back) אֶת־ (-) מַחֲנֵ֣ה (the camp) פְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים (of the Philistines) מִגִּבְע֖וֹן (from Gibeon) וְעַד־ (and to) גָּֽזְרָה׃ (Gezer). 17 וַיֵּצֵ֥א (And went out) שֵׁם־ (the name) דָּוִ֖יד (of David) בְּכָל־ (into all) הָֽאֲרָצ֑וֹת (the lands), וַֽיהוָ֛ה (and YHWH) נָתַ֥ן (brought) אֶת־ (-) פַּחְדּ֖וֹ (the dread of him) עַל־ (upon) כָּל־ (all) הַגּוֹיִֽם׃ (the nations).
