David’s Triumphs
(2 Samuel 8:1–14; Psalm 60:1–12)

1  וַיְהִי֙ (And it came to pass) אַחֲרֵי־ (after) כֵ֔ן (this), וַיַּ֥ךְ (that struck) דָּוִ֛יד (David) אֶת־ (-) פְּלִשְׁתִּ֖ים (the Philistines) וַיַּכְנִיעֵ֑ם (and subdued them), וַיִּקַּ֛ח (and he took) אֶת־ (-) גַּ֥ת (Gath) וּבְנֹתֶ֖יהָ (and its daughters) מִיַּ֥ד (from the hand) פְּלִשְׁתִּֽים׃ (of the Philistines).

2  וַיַּ֖ךְ (And he) אֶת־ (defeated) מוֹאָ֑ב (Moab), וַיִּהְי֤וּ (and became) מוֹאָב֙ (the Moabites) עֲבָדִ֣ים (servants) לְדָוִ֔יד (of David), נֹשְׂאֵ֖י (bringing) מִנְחָֽה׃ (tribute).

3  וַיַּ֥ךְ (And defeated) דָּוִ֛יד (David) אֶת־ (-) הֲדַדְעֶ֥זֶר (Hadadezer) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) צוֹבָ֖ה (of Zobah) חֲמָ֑תָה (as far as Hamath) בְּלֶכְתּ֕וֹ (in his going) לְהַצִּ֥יב (to establish) יָד֖וֹ (his hand) בִּֽנְהַר־ (by the river) פְּרָֽת׃ (Euphrates). 4  וַיִּלְכֹּד֩ (And took) דָּוִ֨יד (David) מִמֶּ֜נּוּ (from him) אֶ֣לֶף (a thousand) רֶ֗כֶב (chariot), וְשִׁבְעַ֤ת (and seven) אֲלָפִים֙ (thousand) פָּֽרָשִׁ֔ים (horsemen), וְעֶשְׂרִ֥ים (and twenty) אֶ֖לֶף (thousand) אִ֣ישׁ (soldiers) רַגְלִ֑י (on foot), וַיְעַקֵּ֤ר (and hamstrung) דָּוִיד֙ (David) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) הָרֶ֔כֶב (the chariot) וַיּוֹתֵ֥ר (and left) מִמֶּ֖נּוּ (of them) מֵ֥אָה (a hundred) רָֽכֶב׃ (chariot).

5  וַיָּבֹא֙ (And came) אֲרַ֣ם (the Aramaeans) דַּרְמֶ֔שֶׂק (of Damascus) לַעְז֕וֹר (to help) לַהֲדַדְעֶ֖זֶר (Hadadezer) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) צוֹבָ֑ה (of Zobah), וַיַּ֤ךְ (and struck down) דָּוִיד֙ (David) בַּאֲרָ֔ם (of Aram) עֶשְׂרִֽים־ (twenty) וּשְׁנַ֥יִם (and two) אֶ֖לֶף (thousand) אִֽישׁ׃ (men). 6  וַיָּ֤שֶׂם (And set up) דָּוִיד֙ (David) בַּאֲרַ֣ם (in Aram) דַּרְמֶ֔שֶׂק (of Damascus), וַיְהִ֤י (and became) אֲרָם֙ (Aram) לְדָוִ֔יד (of David) עֲבָדִ֖ים (servants) נֹשְׂאֵ֣י (bearing) מִנְחָ֑ה (tribute), וַיּ֤וֹשַׁע (and preserved) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) לְדָוִ֔יד (David) בְּכֹ֖ל (in all) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (to which) הָלָֽךְ׃ (he went).

7  וַיִּקַּ֣ח (And took) דָּוִ֗יד (David) אֵ֚ת (-) שִׁלְטֵ֣י (the shields) הַזָּהָ֔ב (of gold) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) הָי֔וּ (were) עַ֖ל (on) עַבְדֵ֣י (the servants) הֲדַדְעָ֑זֶר (of Hadadezer) וַיְבִיאֵ֖ם (and he brought them) יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ (to Jerusalem). 8  וּמִטִּבְחַ֤ת (And from Tibhath) וּמִכּוּן֙ (and from Chun), עָרֵ֣י (cities) הֲדַדְעֶ֔זֶר (of Hadadezer), לָקַ֥ח (brought) דָּוִ֛יד (David) נְחֹ֖שֶׁת (bronze) רַבָּ֣ה (an amount) מְאֹ֑ד (large) בָּ֣הּ׀ (with which) עָשָׂ֣ה (made) שְׁלֹמֹ֗ה (Solomon) אֶת־ (-) יָ֤ם (Sea), הַנְּחֹ֙שֶׁת֙ (the bronze) וְאֶת־ (and) הָֽעַמּוּדִ֔ים (the pillars), וְאֵ֖ת (and) כְּלֵ֥י (the articles) הַנְּחֹֽשֶׁת׃פ (of bronze).

9  וַיִּשְׁמַ֕ע (And heard) תֹּ֖עוּ (Tou) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) חֲמָ֑ת (of Hamath) כִּ֚י (that) הִכָּ֣ה (had defeated) דָוִ֔יד (David) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) חֵ֖יל (the army) הֲדַדְעֶ֥זֶר (of Hadadezer) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) צוֹבָֽה׃ (of Zobah), 10  וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח (and he sent) אֶת־ (-) הֲדֽוֹרָם־ (Hadoram) בְּנ֣וֹ (his son) אֶל־ (to) הַמֶּֽלֶךְ־ (King) דָּ֠וִיד (David) לִשְׁאוֹל (to ask) ל֨וֹ (of him) לְשָׁל֜וֹם (peace) וּֽלְבָרֲכ֗וֹ (and to bless him), עַל֩ (upon) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) נִלְחַ֤ם (he had fought) בַּהֲדַדְעֶ֙זֶר֙ (against Hadadezer) וַיַּכֵּ֔הוּ (and struck him). כִּי־ (For) אִ֛ישׁ (a man) מִלְחֲמ֥וֹת (at war) תֹּ֖עוּ (with Tou) הָיָ֣ה (had been) הֲדַדְעָ֑זֶר (Hadadezer), וְכֹ֗ל (and he had all kinds) כְּלֵ֛י (of articles) זָהָ֥ב (of gold) וָכֶ֖סֶף (and silver) וּנְחֹֽשֶׁת׃ (and bronze). 11  גַּם־ (Also) אֹתָ֗ם (these) הִקְדִּ֞ישׁ (dedicated) הַמֶּ֤לֶךְ (King) דָּוִיד֙ (David) לַיהוָ֔ה (to YHWH), עִם־ (along with) הַכֶּ֙סֶף֙ (the silver) וְהַזָּהָ֔ב (and the gold) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) נָשָׂ֖א (he had brought) מִכָּל־ (from all) הַגּוֹיִ֑ם (the nations)— מֵֽאֱד֤וֹם (from Edom), וּמִמּוֹאָב֙ (and from Moab), וּמִבְּנֵ֣י (and from the sons) עַמּ֔וֹן (of Ammon), וּמִפְּלִשְׁתִּ֖ים (and from the Philistines), וּמֵֽעֲמָלֵֽק׃ (and from Amalek).

12  וְאַבְשַׁ֣י (And Abishai) בֶּן־ (son) צְרוּיָ֗ה (of Zeruiah) הִכָּ֤ה (struck) אֶת־ (-) אֱדוֹם֙ (Edom) בְּגֵ֣יא (in the Valley) הַמֶּ֔לַח (of Salt)— שְׁמוֹנָ֥ה (eight) עָשָׂ֖ר (and ten) אָֽלֶף׃ (thousand). 13  וַיָּ֤שֶׂם (And He put) בֶּֽאֱדוֹם֙ (in Edom) נְצִיבִ֔ים (garrisons), וַיִּהְי֥וּ (and became) כָל־ (all) אֱד֖וֹם (Edom) עֲבָדִ֣ים (servants) לְדָוִ֑יד (of David). וַיּ֤וֹשַׁע (And saved) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) דָּוִ֔יד (David) בְּכֹ֖ל (in all) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (to which) הָלָֽךְ׃ (he went).

(2 Samuel 8:15–18)

14  וַיִּמְלֹ֥ךְ (And reigned) דָּוִ֖יד (David) עַל־ (over) כָּל־ (all) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (Israel), וַיְהִ֗י (and it came to pass that) עֹשֶׂ֛ה (he was doing) מִשְׁפָּ֥ט (judgment) וּצְדָקָ֖ה (and justice) לְכָל־ (to all) עַמּֽוֹ׃ (his people).

15  וְיוֹאָ֥ב (And Joab) בֶּן־ (son) צְרוּיָ֖ה (of Zeruiah was) עַל־ (over) הַצָּבָ֑א (the army);

וִיהוֹשָׁפָ֥ט (and Jehoshaphat) בֶּן־ (son) אֲחִיל֖וּד (of Ahilud), מַזְכִּֽיר׃ (was recorder).

16  וְצָד֧וֹק (And Zadok) בֶּן־ (son) אֲחִיט֛וּב (of Ahitub), וַאֲבִימֶ֥לֶךְ (and Abimelech) בֶּן־ (son) אֶבְיָתָ֖ר (of Abiathar), כֹּהֲנִ֑ים (were priests);

וְשַׁוְשָׁ֖א (and Shavsha) סוֹפֵֽר׃ (was scribe);

17  וּבְנָיָ֙הוּ֙ (and Benaiah) בֶּן־ (son) יְה֣וֹיָדָ֔ע (of Jehoiada) עַל־ (was over) הַכְּרֵתִ֖י (the Cherethites) וְהַפְּלֵתִ֑י (and the Pelethites);

וּבְנֵי־ (and sons) דָוִ֥יד (of David), הָרִאשֹׁנִ֖ים (were the chief ministers) לְיַ֥ד (at side) הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃פ (the king).
