The Shunammite’s Land Restored

1 וֶאֱלִישָׁ֡ע (And Elisha) דִּבֶּ֣ר (spoke) אֶל־ (to) הָאִשָּׁה֩ (the woman), אֲשֶׁר־ (whom) הֶחֱיָ֨ה (he had revived), אֶת־ (-) בְּנָ֜הּ (her son), לֵאמֹ֗ר (saying), ק֤וּמִי (Arise) וּלְכִי֙ (and go), אַתִּי (you) וּבֵיתֵ֔ךְ (and your house), וְג֖וּרִי (and sojourn) בַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר (to where) תָּג֑וּרִי (you will sojourn). כִּֽי־ (For) קָרָ֤א (has called) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) לָֽרָעָ֔ב (for a famine), וְגַם־ (and also) בָּ֥א (it will come) אֶל־ (upon) הָאָ֖רֶץ (the land) שֶׁ֥בַע (seven) שָׁנִֽים׃ (years).

2 וַתָּ֙קָם֙ (And arose) הָֽאִשָּׁ֔ה (the woman) וַתַּ֕עַשׂ (and she did) כִּדְבַ֖ר (according to the word) אִ֣ישׁ (of the man) הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים (of God), וַתֵּ֤לֶךְ (and she went) הִיא֙ (she) וּבֵיתָ֔הּ (and her house) וַתָּ֥גָר (and she sojourned) בְּאֶֽרֶץ־ (in the land) פְּלִשְׁתִּ֖ים (of the Philistines) שֶׁ֥בַע (seven) שָׁנִֽים׃ (years).

3 וַיְהִ֗י (And it came to pass) מִקְצֵה֙ (at the end) שֶׁ֣בַע (of seven) שָׁנִ֔ים (years) וַתָּ֥שָׁב (that returned) הָאִשָּׁ֖ה (the woman) מֵאֶ֣רֶץ (from the land) פְּלִשְׁתִּ֑ים (of the Philistines), וַתֵּצֵא֙ (and she went) לִצְעֹ֣ק (to make an appeal) אֶל־ (to) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (the king) אֶל־ (on behalf) בֵּיתָ֖הּ (of her house) וְאֶל־ (and on behalf) שָׂדָֽהּ׃ (her field).

4 וְהַמֶּ֗לֶךְ (And the king) מְדַבֵּר֙ (spoke) אֶל־ (to) גֵּ֣חֲזִ֔י (Gehazi) נַ֥עַר (the servant) אִישׁ־ (of the man) הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים (of God), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), סַפְּרָה־ (Recount), נָּ֣א (please), לִ֔י (to me) אֵ֥ת (-) כָּל־ (all) הַגְּדֹל֖וֹת (the great things) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) עָשָׂ֥ה (has done) אֱלִישָֽׁע׃ (Elisha).

5 וַ֠יְהִי (And it came to pass), ה֥וּא (as he) מְסַפֵּ֣ר (was telling) לַמֶּלֶךְ֮ (the king) אֵ֣ת (-) אֲשֶׁר־ (how) הֶחֱיָ֣ה (he had revived) אֶת־ (-) הַמֵּת֒ (the dead), וְהִנֵּ֨ה (that there was) הָאִשָּׁ֜ה (the woman) אֲשֶׁר־ (whom) הֶחֱיָ֤ה (he had revived) אֶת־ (-) בְּנָהּ֙ (her son), צֹעֶ֣קֶת (appealing) אֶל־ (to) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (the king) עַל־ (for) בֵּיתָ֖הּ (her house) וְעַל־ (and for) שָׂדָ֑הּ (her field). וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) גֵּֽחֲזִי֙ (Gehazi), אֲדֹנִ֣י (My lord) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (the king), זֹ֚את (this is) הָֽאִשָּׁ֔ה (the woman) וְזֶה־ (and this is) בְּנָ֖הּ (her son) אֲשֶׁר־ (whom) הֶחֱיָ֥ה (revived) אֱלִישָֽׁע׃ (Elisha).

6 וַיִּשְׁאַ֥ל (And asked) הַמֶּ֛לֶךְ (the king) לָאִשָּׁ֖ה (the woman), וַתְּסַפֶּר־ (and she told) ל֑וֹ (him). וַיִּתֶּן־ (And appointed) לָ֣הּ (for her) הַמֶּלֶךְ֩ (the king) סָרִ֨יס (eunuch) אֶחָ֜ד (one), לֵאמֹ֗ר (saying), הָשֵׁ֤יב (Restore) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that was) לָהּ֙ (unto her) וְאֵת֙ (and) כָּל־ (all) תְּבוּאֹ֣ת (the proceeds) הַשָּׂדֶ֔ה (of the field) מִיּ֛וֹם (from the day) עָזְבָ֥ה (that she left) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֖רֶץ (the land), וְעַד־ (and until) עָֽתָּה׃פ (now).

Hazael Murders Ben-hadad

7 וַיָּבֹ֤א (And went) אֱלִישָׁע֙ (Elisha) דַּמֶּ֔שֶׂק (to Damascus), וּבֶן־ (and Ben-) הֲדַ֥ד (hadad) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) אֲרָ֖ם (of Aram) חֹלֶ֑ה (was sick). וַיֻּגַּד־ (And it was declared) ל֣וֹ (to him), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), בָּ֛א (Has come) אִ֥ישׁ (the man) הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים (of God) עַד־ (as far as) הֵֽנָּה׃ (here).

8 וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ (the king) אֶל־ (to) חֲזָהאֵ֗ל (Hazael), קַ֤ח (Take) בְּיָֽדְךָ֙ (in your hand) מִנְחָ֔ה (a gift) וְלֵ֕ךְ (and go) לִקְרַ֖את (to meet) אִ֣ישׁ (the man) הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים (of God), וְדָרַשְׁתָּ֨ (and inquire) אֶת־ (of) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) מֵֽאוֹתוֹ֙ (by him), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), הַאֶחְיֶ֖ה (Will I recover) מֵחֳלִ֥י (from sickness) זֶֽה׃ (this).

9 וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ (And went) חֲזָאֵל֮ (Hazael) לִקְרָאתוֹ֒ (to meet him), וַיִּקַּ֨ח (and took) מִנְחָ֤ה (a gift) בְיָדוֹ֙ (in his hand) וְכָל־ (and of every) ט֣וּב (good thing) דַּמֶּ֔שֶׂק (of Damascus), מַשָּׂ֖א (a burden) אַרְבָּעִ֣ים (of forty) גָּמָ֑ל (camel). וַיָּבֹא֙ (And he came) וַיַּעֲמֹ֣ד (and stood) לְפָנָ֔יו (before his face) וַיֹּ֗אמֶר (and said), בִּנְךָ֨ (Your son) בֶן־ (Ben-) הֲדַ֤ד (hadad) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) אֲרָם֙ (of Aram) שְׁלָחַ֤נִי (has sent me) אֵלֶ֙יךָ֙ (to you), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), הַאֶחְיֶ֖ה (Will I recover) מֵחֳלִ֥י (from sickness) זֶֽה׃ (this).

10 וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) אֵלָיו֙ (to him) אֱלִישָׁ֔ע (Elisha), לֵ֥ךְ (Go), אֱמָר־ (say), לֹא (Not) חָיֹ֣ה (recovering) תִחְיֶ֑ה (you will recover)? וְהִרְאַ֥נִי (And has shown me) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) כִּֽי־ (that) מ֥וֹת (dying) יָמֽוּת׃ (he will die).

11 וַיַּעֲמֵ֥ד (And he set) אֶת־ (-) פָּנָ֖יו (his countenance), וַיָּ֣שֶׂם (and he set it) עַד־ (until) בֹּ֑שׁ (he was ashamed). וַיֵּ֖בְךְּ (And wept) אִ֥ישׁ (the man) הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃ (of God).

12 וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) חֲזָאֵ֔ל (Hazael), מַדּ֖וּעַ (Why) אֲדֹנִ֣י (my lord) בֹכֶ֑ה (is weeping)?

וַיֹּ֡אמֶר (And He answered), כִּֽי־ (Because) יָדַ֡עְתִּי (I know) אֵ֣ת (-) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) תַּעֲשֶׂה֩ (you will do) לִבְנֵ֨י (to the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל (of Israel) רָעָ֗ה (the evil)— מִבְצְרֵיהֶ֞ם (their strongholds) תְּשַׁלַּ֤ח (you will send) בָּאֵשׁ֙ (into the fire), וּבַחֻֽרֵיהֶם֙ (and their young men) בַּחֶ֣רֶב (with the sword) תַּהֲרֹ֔ג (you will kill), וְעֹלְלֵיהֶ֣ם (and their children) תְּרַטֵּ֔שׁ (you will dash to pieces), וְהָרֹתֵיהֶ֖ם (and their pregnant women) תְּבַקֵּֽעַ׃ (you will split open).

13 וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) חֲזָהאֵ֔ל (Hazael), כִּ֣י (But) מָ֤ה (what is) עַבְדְּךָ֙ (your servant), הַכֶּ֔לֶב (a dog), כִּ֣י (that) יַעֲשֶׂ֔ה (he should do) הַדָּבָ֥ר (the thing) הַגָּד֖וֹל (great) הַזֶּ֑ה (this)?

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And answered) אֱלִישָׁ֔ע (Elisha), הִרְאַ֧נִי (Has made me see) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) אֹתְךָ֖ (that you will be) מֶ֥לֶךְ (king) עַל־ (over) אֲרָֽם׃ (Aram).

14 וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ׀ (And he departed) מֵאֵ֣ת (from) אֱלִישָׁ֗ע (Elisha) וַיָּבֹא֙ (and came) אֶל־ (to) אֲדֹנָ֔יו (his master), וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and he said) ל֔וֹ (to him), מָֽה־ (What) אָמַ֥ר (did say) לְךָ֖ (to you) אֱלִישָׁ֑ע (Elisha)?

וַיֹּ֕אמֶר (And he said), אָ֥מַר (He said) לִ֖י (to me): חָיֹ֥ה (Recovering) תִחְיֶֽה׃ (you will recover). 15 וַיְהִ֣י (And it came to pass) מִֽמָּחֳרָ֗ת (on the next day) וַיִּקַּ֤ח (that he took) הַמַּכְבֵּר֙ (a thick cloth) וַיִּטְבֹּ֣ל (and dipped it) בַּמַּ֔יִם (in the waters) וַיִּפְרֹ֥שׂ (and he spread it) עַל־ (over) פָּנָ֖יו (his face), וַיָּמֹ֑ת (and he died).

וַיִּמְלֹ֥ךְ (And reigned) חֲזָהאֵ֖ל (Hazael) תַּחְתָּֽיו׃פ (in his place).

Jehoram Reigns in Judah

16 וּבִשְׁנַ֣ת (And in the year) חָמֵ֗שׁ (fifth) לְיוֹרָ֤ם (of Joram) בֶּן־ (son) אַחְאָב֙ (of Ahab) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel)— וִיהוֹשָׁפָ֖ט (and Jehoshaphat) מֶ֣לֶךְ (was king) יְהוּדָ֑ה (of Judah)— מָלַ֛ךְ (began his reign) יְהוֹרָ֥ם (Jehoram) בֶּן־ (son) יְהוֹשָׁפָ֖ט (of Jehoshaphat) מֶ֥לֶךְ (as king) יְהוּדָֽה׃ (of Judah). 17 בֶּן־ (A son) שְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים (of thirty) וּשְׁתַּ֛יִם (and two) שָׁנָ֖ה (years) הָיָ֣ה (he was) בְמָלְכ֑וֹ (in his reigning), וּשְׁמֹנֶ֣ה (and eight) שָׁנָה (years) מָלַ֖ךְ (he reigned) בִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ (in Jerusalem).

18 וַיֵּ֜לֶךְ (And he walked) בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ׀ (in the way) מַלְכֵ֣י (of the kings) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel), כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר (as) עָשׂוּ֙ (had done) בֵּ֣ית (the house) אַחְאָ֔ב (of Ahab). כִּ֚י (For) בַּת־ (the daughter) אַחְאָ֔ב (of Ahab) הָֽיְתָה־ (was) לּ֖וֹ (his) לְאִשָּׁ֑ה (wife); וַיַּ֥עַשׂ (and he did) הָרַ֖ע (evil) בְּעֵינֵ֥י (in the eyes) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).

19 וְלֹֽא־ (And not) אָבָ֤ה (was willing) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) לְהַשְׁחִ֣ית (to destroy) אֶת־ (-) יְהוּדָ֔ה (Judah), לְמַ֖עַן (for the sake) דָּוִ֣ד (of David) עַבְדּ֑וֹ (his servant), כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר (as) אָֽמַר־ (He promised) ל֗וֹ (to him) לָתֵ֨ת (to give) ל֥וֹ (to him) נִ֛יר (a lamp), לְבָנָ֖יו (for his sons) כָּל־ (all) הַיָּמִֽים׃ (the days).

20 בְּיָמָיו֙ (In his days) פָּשַׁ֣ע (revolted) אֱד֔וֹם (Edom) מִתַּ֖חַת (against) יַד־ (the hand) יְהוּדָ֑ה (of Judah), וַיַּמְלִ֥כוּ (and they appointed) עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם (over themselves) מֶֽלֶךְ׃ (a king). 21 וַיַּעֲבֹ֤ר (And went) יוֹרָם֙ (Joram) צָעִ֔ירָה (to Zair), וְכָל־ (and all) הָרֶ֖כֶב (the chariots) עִמּ֑וֹ (with him), וַֽיְהִי־ (and) ה֞וּא (he) קָ֣ם (rose) לַ֗יְלָה (by night) וַיַּכֶּ֨ה (and struck) אֶת־ (-) אֱד֜וֹם (Edom), הַסֹּבֵ֤יב (who had surrounded) אֵלָיו֙ (him), וְאֵת֙ (and) שָׂרֵ֣י (the captains) הָרֶ֔כֶב (of the chariots). וַיָּ֥נָס (And fled) הָעָ֖ם (the people) לְאֹהָלָֽיו׃ (to their tents).

22 וַיִּפְשַׁ֣ע (And has been in revolt) אֱד֗וֹם (Edom) מִתַּ֙חַת֙ (against) יַד־ (the hand) יְהוּדָ֔ה (of Judah) עַ֖ד (to) הַיּ֣וֹם (the day) הַזֶּ֑ה (this). אָ֛ז (Then) תִּפְשַׁ֥ע (revolted) לִבְנָ֖ה (Libnah) בָּעֵ֥ת (at the time) הַהִֽיא׃ (that).

23 וְיֶ֛תֶר (And the rest) דִּבְרֵ֥י (of the acts) יוֹרָ֖ם (of Joram) וְכָל־ (and all) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) עָשָׂ֑ה (he did), הֲלֽוֹא־ (are not) הֵ֣ם (they) כְּתוּבִ֗ים (written) עַל־ (in) סֵ֛פֶר (the Book) דִּבְרֵ֥י (of the Words) הַיָּמִ֖ים (of the Days) לְמַלְכֵ֥י (of the Kings) יְהוּדָֽה׃ (of Judah)?

24 וַיִּשְׁכַּ֤ב (And rested) יוֹרָם֙ (Joram) עִם־ (with) אֲבֹתָ֔יו (his fathers) וַיִּקָּבֵ֥ר (and was buried) עִם־ (with) אֲבֹתָ֖יו (his fathers) בְּעִ֣יר (in the City) דָּוִ֑ד (of David). וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ (And reigned) אֲחַזְיָ֥הוּ (Ahaziah) בְנ֖וֹ (his son) תַּחְתָּֽיו׃פ (in his place).

25 בִּשְׁנַת֙ (In) שְׁתֵּים־ (he two) עֶשְׂרֵ֣ה (and tenth) שָׁנָ֔ה (year) לְיוֹרָ֥ם (of Jehoram) בֶּן־ (son) אַחְאָ֖ב (of Ahab) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel), מָלַ֛ךְ (began to reign) אֲחַזְיָ֥הוּ (Ahaziah) בֶן־ (son) יְהוֹרָ֖ם (of Joram) מֶ֥לֶךְ (king) יְהוּדָֽה׃ (of Judah). 26 בֶּן־ (A son) עֶשְׂרִ֨ים (of twenty) וּשְׁתַּ֤יִם (and two) שָׁנָה֙ (years) אֲחַזְיָ֣הוּ (Ahaziah was) בְמָלְכ֔וֹ (in his reigning), וְשָׁנָ֣ה (and year) אַחַ֔ת (one) מָלַ֖ךְ (he reigned) בִּירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (in Jerusalem). וְשֵׁ֤ם (And the name) אִמּוֹ֙ (of His mother) עֲתַלְיָ֔הוּ (was Athaliah), בַּת־ (the daughter) עָמְרִ֖י (of Omri) מֶ֥לֶךְ (king) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel).

27 וַיֵּ֗לֶךְ (And he walked) בְּדֶ֙רֶךְ֙ (in the way) בֵּ֣ית (of the house) אַחְאָ֔ב (of Ahab) וַיַּ֧עַשׂ (and did) הָרַ֛ע (evil) בְּעֵינֵ֥י (in the eyes) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH), כְּבֵ֣ית (like the house) אַחְאָ֑ב (of Ahab), כִּ֛י (for) חֲתַ֥ן (the son-in-law) בֵּית־ (of the house) אַחְאָ֖ב (of Ahab) הֽוּא׃ (he was).

28 וַיֵּ֜לֶךְ (And he went) אֶת־ (with) יוֹרָ֣ם (Jehoram) בֶּן־ (son) אַחְאָ֗ב (of Ahab) לַמִּלְחָמָ֛ה (to the battle) עִם־ (against) חֲזָהאֵ֥ל (Hazael) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) אֲרָ֖ם (of Aram) בְּרָמֹ֣ת (at Ramoth-) גִּלְעָ֑ד (gilead). וַיַּכּ֥וּ (And wounded) אֲרַמִּ֖ים (the Aramaeans) אֶת־ (-) יוֹרָֽם׃ (Jehoram). 29 וַיָּשָׁב֩ (And went back) יוֹרָ֨ם (Jehoram) הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ (the king) לְהִתְרַפֵּ֣א (to recover)— בְיִזְרְעֶ֗אל (to Jezreel)— מִן־ (from) הַמַּכִּים֙ (the wounds) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) יַכֻּ֤הוּ (had inflicted on him) אֲרַמִּים֙ (the Aramaeans) בָּֽרָמָ֔ה (at Ramah) בְּהִלָּ֣חֲמ֔וֹ (when he fought) אֶת־ (against) חֲזָהאֵ֖ל (Hazael) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) אֲרָ֑ם (of Aram). וַאֲחַזְיָ֨הוּ (And Ahaziah) בֶן־ (son) יְהוֹרָ֜ם (of Jehoram) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) יְהוּדָ֗ה (of Judah) יָרַ֡ד (went down) לִרְא֞וֹת (to see) אֶת־ (-) יוֹרָ֧ם (Jehoram) בֶּן־ (son) אַחְאָ֛ב (of Ahab) בְּיִזְרְעֶ֖אל (in Jezreel), כִּֽי־ (because) חֹלֶ֥ה (was sick) הֽוּא׃פ (he).
