Woe to Those at Ease in Zion
(Luke 6:24–26)

1  ה֚וֹי (Woe) הַשַּׁאֲנַנִּ֣ים (to those at ease) בְּצִיּ֔וֹן (in Zion),

וְהַבֹּטְחִ֖ים (and) בְּהַ֣ר (in Mount) שֹׁמְר֑וֹן (Samaria),

נְקֻבֵי֙ (leaders) רֵאשִׁ֣ית (of the foremost) הַגּוֹיִ֔ם (of the nations),

וּבָ֥אוּ (and does come)! לָהֶ֖ם (To them) בֵּ֥ית (the house) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel).

2  עִבְר֤וּ (Cross over) כַֽלְנֵה֙ (to Calneh), וּרְא֔וּ (and see);

וּלְכ֥וּ (and go) מִשָּׁ֖ם (from there) חֲמַ֣ת (to Hamath) רַבָּ֑ה (the great),

וּרְד֣וּ (and go down) גַת־ (to Gath) פְּלִשְׁתּ֗ים (of the Philistines).

הֲטוֹבִים֙ (Are you better) מִן־ (than) הַמַּמְלָכ֣וֹת (the kingdoms)? הָאֵ֔לֶּה (These)

אִם־ (or) רַ֥ב (is greater) גְּבוּלָ֖ם (their territory) מִגְּבֻלְכֶֽם׃ (than your⁺ territory)?

3  הַֽמְנַדִּ֖ים (You are putting away) לְי֣וֹם (the day), רָ֑ע (of disaster)

וַתַּגִּישׁ֖וּן (and who cause to come near); שֶׁ֥בֶת (the seat) חָמָֽס׃ (of violence).

4  הַשֹּֽׁכְבִים֙ (You those laying down) עַל־ (on) מִטּ֣וֹת (beds) שֵׁ֔ן (of ivory),

וּסְרֻחִ֖ים (and stretching out) עַל־ (on) עַרְשׂוֹתָ֑ם (their couches),

וְאֹכְלִ֤ים (and eating) כָּרִים֙ (lambs) מִצֹּ֔אן (from the flock),

וַעֲגָלִ֖ים (and calves) מִתּ֥וֹךְ (from the midst) מַרְבֵּֽק׃ (of the stall);

5  הַפֹּרְטִ֖ים (those singing foolishly) עַל־ (over) פִּ֣י (the mouth) הַנָּ֑בֶל (of the harp), כְּדָוִ֕יד (like David);

חָשְׁב֥וּ (devising) לָהֶ֖ם (for themselves) כְּלֵי־ (all manner) שִֽׁיר׃ (of song),

6  הַשֹּׁתִ֤ים (those drinking) בְּמִזְרְקֵי֙ (from bowls), יַ֔יִן (of wine)

וְרֵאשִׁ֥ית (and with the finest) שְׁמָנִ֖ים (ointments), יִמְשָׁ֑חוּ (they anoint themselves)

וְלֹ֥א (and not) נֶחְל֖וּ (are grieved)

עַל־ (over) שֵׁ֥בֶר (the breach) יוֹסֵֽף (of Joseph).

7  לָכֵ֛ן (Therefore) עַתָּ֥ה (now) יִגְל֖וּ (they will be removed)

בְּרֹ֣אשׁ (at the head) גֹּלִ֑ים (of the captives),

וְסָ֖ר (and will be turned aside). מִרְזַ֥ח (The feasting)

סְרוּחִֽים׃פ (and lounging).

The Pride of Israel

8  נִשְׁבַּע֩ (Has sworn) אֲדֹנָ֨י (the Lord) יְהוִ֜ה (YHWH) בְּנַפְשׁ֗וֹ (by Himself), נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (the God) צְבָא֔וֹת (of Hosts),

מְתָאֵ֤ב (Abhor) אָֽנֹכִי֙ (I) אֶת־ (-) גְּא֣וֹן (the pride) יַֽעֲקֹ֔ב (of Jacob),

וְאַרְמְנֹתָ֖יו (and his citadels); שָׂנֵ֑אתִי (I hate)

וְהִסְגַּרְתִּ֖י (and I will deliver up) עִ֥יר (the city)

וּמְלֹאָֽהּ׃ (and its fullness).

9  וְהָיָ֗ה (Then It will come to pass that), אִם־ (if) יִוָּ֨תְר֜וּ (should remain) עֲשָׂרָ֧ה (ten) אֲנָשִׁ֛ים (men) בְּבַ֥יִת (in a house), אֶחָ֖ד (single) וָמֵֽתוּ׃ (they also will die). 10  וּנְשָׂא֞וֹ (And lifts up him), דּוֹד֣וֹ (his loved one) וּמְסָרְפ֗וֹ (even his burner) לְהוֹצִ֣יא (to bring out) עֲצָמִים֮ (the bones) מִן־ (from) הַבַּיִת֒ (the house), וְאָמַ֞ר (and he will say) לַאֲשֶׁ֨ר (to the one) בְּיַרְכְּתֵ֥י (inside) הַבַּ֛יִת (the house), הַע֥וֹד (Are there any) עִמָּ֖ךְ (with you)

וְאָמַ֣ר (and he will say), אָ֑פֶס (None).

וְאָמַ֣ר (And he will say), הָ֔ס (Hush); כִּ֛י (for) לֹ֥א (not) לְהַזְכִּ֖יר (we must mention) בְּשֵׁ֥ם (of the name) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).

11  כִּֽי־ (For), הִנֵּ֤ה (behold), יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) מְצַוֶּ֔ה (is giving a command),

וְהִכָּ֛ה (and He will strike) הַבַּ֥יִת (the house) הַגָּד֖וֹל (great) רְסִיסִ֑ים (to pieces),

וְהַבַּ֥יִת (and the house) הַקָּטֹ֖ן (little) בְּקִעִֽים׃ (to bits).

12  הַיְרֻצ֤וּן (Do run) בַּסֶּ֙לַע֙ (on the cliff)? סוּסִ֔ים (Horses)

אִֽם־ (or) יַחֲר֖וֹשׁ (does one plow there) בַּבְּקָרִ֑ים (with the oxen)?

כִּֽי־ (Yet) הֲפַכְתֶּ֤ם (you⁺ have turned) לְרֹאשׁ֙ (into poison), מִשְׁפָּ֔ט (justice)

וּפְרִ֥י (and the fruit) צְדָקָ֖ה (of righteousness) לְלַעֲנָֽה׃ (into wormwood),

13  הַשְּׂמֵחִ֖ים (you who are glad) לְלֹ֣א (in Lo-) דָבָ֑ר (Debar), הָאֹ֣מְרִ֔ים (saying),

הֲל֣וֹא (Is it not) בְחָזְקֵ֔נוּ (by our own strength)? לָקַ֥חְנוּ (That we have taken) לָ֖נוּ (for ourselves) קַרְנָֽיִם׃ (Karnaim).

14  כִּ֡י (For), הִנְנִי֩ (behold) מֵקִ֨ים (I am raising up) עֲלֵיכֶ֜ם (against you⁺) בֵּ֣ית (O house)

יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel), נְאֻם־ (a declaration)

יְהוָ֛ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֥י (the God) הַצְּבָא֖וֹת (of the Hosts); גּ֑וֹי (a nation),

וְלָחֲצ֥וּ (And they will oppress) אֶתְכֶ֛ם (you⁺)

מִלְּב֥וֹא (from Lebo-) חֲמָ֖ת (hamath) עַד־ (to) נַ֥חַל (the Brook) הָעֲרָבָֽה׃ס (of the Arabah).
