Hosea’s Wife and Children

1  דְּבַר־ (The word) יְהוָ֣ה׀ (of YHWH) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) הָיָ֗ה (came) אֶל־ (to) הוֹשֵׁ֙עַ֙ (Hosea), בֶּן־ (son) בְּאֵרִ֔י (of Beeri), בִּימֵ֨י (in the days) עֻזִּיָּ֥ה (of Uzziah), יוֹתָ֛ם (Jotham), אָחָ֥ז (Ahaz), יְחִזְקִיָּ֖ה (and Hezekiah) מַלְכֵ֣י (kings) יְהוּדָ֑ה (of Judah), וּבִימֵ֛י (and in the days) יָרָבְעָ֥ם (of Jeroboam) בֶּן־ (son) יוֹאָ֖שׁ (of Joash), מֶ֥לֶךְ (king) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel).

2  תְּחִלַּ֥ת (The beginning) דִּבֶּר־ (when spoke) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) בְּהוֹשֵׁ֑עַ פ (by Hosea). וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) הוֹשֵׁ֗עַ (Hosea), לֵ֣ךְ (Go), קַח־ (take) לְךָ֞ (for yourself) אֵ֤שֶׁת (a wife) זְנוּנִים֙ (of prostitution) וְיַלְדֵ֣י (and children) זְנוּנִ֔ים (of prostitution); כִּֽי־ (for) זָנֹ֤ה (is prostituting herself) תִזְנֶה֙ (acting like a prostitute), הָאָ֔רֶץ (the land) מֵֽאַחֲרֵ֖י (from after) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH).

3  וַיֵּ֙לֶךְ֙ (And he went) וַיִּקַּ֔ח (and took) אֶת־ (-) גֹּ֖מֶר (Gomer) בַּת־ (the daughter) דִּבְלָ֑יִם (of Diblaim); וַתַּ֥הַר (and she conceived), וַתֵּֽלֶד־ (and bore) ל֖וֹ (to him) בֵּֽן׃ (a son).

4  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֵלָ֔יו (to him) קְרָ֥א (Call) שְׁמ֖וֹ (his name) יִזְרְעֶ֑אל (Jezreel); כִּי־ (for) ע֣וֹד (yet) מְעַ֗ט (a little) וּפָ֨קַדְתִּ֜י (and I will avenge) אֶת־ (-) דְּמֵ֤י (the bloodshed) יִזְרְעֶאל֙ (of Jezreel) עַל־ (on) בֵּ֣ית (the house) יֵה֔וּא (of Jehu), וְהִ֨שְׁבַּתִּ֔י (and I will bring to an end) מַמְלְכ֖וּת (the kingdom) בֵּ֥ית (of the house) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel). 5  וְהָיָ֖ה (And it will come to pass) בַּיּ֣וֹם (in the day), הַה֑וּא (that) וְשָֽׁבַרְתִּי֙ (and that I will break) אֶת־ (-) קֶ֣שֶׁת (the bow) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) בְּעֵ֖מֶק (in the valley) יִזְרְעֶֽאל׃ (of Jezreel).

6  וַתַּ֤הַר (And his wife conceived) עוֹד֙ (again), וַתֵּ֣לֶד (and she bore) בַּ֔ת (a daughter). וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And He said) ל֔וֹ (to him) קְרָ֥א (Call) שְׁמָ֖הּ (her name) לֹ֣א (Lo-) רֻחָ֑מָה (ruhamah), כִּי֩ (for) לֹ֨א (no) אוֹסִ֜יף (will I continue) ע֗וֹד (longer) אֲרַחֵם֙ (to have compassion) אֶת־ (-) בֵּ֣ית (on the house) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel); כִּֽי־ (that) נָשֹׂ֥א (lifting) אֶשָּׂ֖א (I should lift) לָהֶֽם׃ (for them). 7  וְאֶת־ (And on) בֵּ֤ית (the house) יְהוּדָה֙ (of Judah), אֲרַחֵ֔ם (I will have compassion) וְהֽוֹשַׁעְתִּ֖ים (and I will save them) בַּיהוָ֣ה (by YHWH) אֱלֹֽהֵיהֶ֑ם (their God), וְלֹ֣א (and not) אֽוֹשִׁיעֵ֗ם (will I save them) בְּקֶ֤שֶׁת (by bow), וּבְחֶ֙רֶב֙ (or by sword), וּבְמִלְחָמָ֔ה (or by battle), בְּסוּסִ֖ים (by horses), וּבְפָרָשִֽׁים׃ (or by horsemen).

8  וַתִּגְמֹ֖ל (And she had weaned) אֶת־ (-) לֹ֣א (Lo-) רֻחָ֑מָה (ruhamah), וַתַּ֖הַר (and she conceived), וַתֵּ֥לֶד (and bore) בֵּֽן׃ (a son). 9  וַיֹּ֕אמֶר (And He said) קְרָ֥א (Call) שְׁמ֖וֹ (his name) לֹ֣א (Lo-) עַמִּ֑י (ammi), כִּ֤י (for) אַתֶּם֙ (you⁺) לֹ֣א (are not) עַמִּ֔י (My people), וְאָנֹכִ֖י (and I) לֹֽא־ (not) אֶהְיֶ֥ה (am I any longer) לָכֶֽם׃ס (unto you⁺)

10  וְֽ֠הָיָה (and shall be) מִסְפַּ֤ר (the number) בְּנֵֽי־ (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel) כְּח֣וֹל (like the sand) הַיָּ֔ם (of the sea), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (which) לֹֽא־ (not) יִמַּ֖ד (can be measured) וְלֹ֣א (and cannot) יִסָּפֵ֑ר (be counted); וְֽ֠הָיָה (and it will come to pass), בִּמְק֞וֹם (in the place) אֲשֶׁר־ (where) יֵאָמֵ֤ר (it was said) לָהֶם֙ (to them) לֹֽא־ (Not) עַמִּ֣י (My people), אַתֶּ֔ם (are you⁺) יֵאָמֵ֥ר (it will be said) לָהֶ֖ם (of them) בְּנֵ֥י (Sons) אֵֽל־ (God) חָֽי׃ (of the living). 11  וְ֠נִקְבְּצוּ (And will be gathered), בְּנֵֽי־ (the sons) יְהוּדָ֤ה (of Judah) וּבְנֵֽי־ (and the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel) יַחְדָּ֔ו (together), וְשָׂמ֥וּ (and they will appoint) לָהֶ֛ם (for themselves) רֹ֥אשׁ (a head), אֶחָ֖ד (one) וְעָל֣וּ (and they will go up) מִן־ (from) הָאָ֑רֶץ (the land), כִּ֥י (for) גָד֖וֹל (great will be) י֥וֹם (the day) יִזְרְעֶֽאל׃ (of Jezreel).
