A Reproof of Ephraim, Judah, and Jacob

1  אֶפְרַ֜יִם (Ephraim) רֹעֶ֥ה (is grazing on) ר֙וּחַ֙ (the wind),

וְרֹדֵ֣ף (and pursuing) קָדִ֔ים (the east wind); כָּל־ (all) הַיּ֕וֹם (the day)

כָּזָ֥ב (lies) וָשֹׁ֖ד (and violence); יַרְבֶּ֑ה (he multiplies)

וּבְרִית֙ (and a covenant) עִם־ (with) אַשּׁ֣וּר (Assyria), יִכְרֹ֔תוּ (they cut)

וְשֶׁ֖מֶן (and oil) לְמִצְרַ֥יִם (to Egypt) יוּבָֽל׃ (is carried).

2  וְרִ֥יב (And a dispute) לַֽיהוָ֖ה (is unto YHWH) עִם־ (against) יְהוּדָ֑ה (Judah),

וְלִפְקֹ֤ד (to visit punishment) עַֽל־ (on) יַעֲקֹב֙ (Jacob) כִּדְרָכָ֔יו (according to his ways);

כְּמַעֲלָלָ֖יו (and according to his deeds) יָשִׁ֥יב (He will recompense) לֽוֹ׃ (to him).

3  בַּבֶּ֖טֶן (In the womb), עָקַ֣ב (he took by the heel) אֶת־ (-) אָחִ֑יו (his brother)

וּבְאוֹנ֖וֹ (and in his strength) שָׂרָ֥ה (he struggled) אֶת־ (with) אֱלֹהִֽים׃ (God).

4  וָיָּ֤שַׂר (And he struggled) אֶל־ (with) מַלְאָךְ֙ (the angel), וַיֻּכָ֔ל (and prevailed);

בָּכָ֖ה (he wept), וַיִּתְחַנֶּן־ (and sought favor) ל֑וֹ (from Him)

בֵּֽית־ (at Beth-) אֵל֙ (el), יִמְצָאֶ֔נּוּ (he found Him)

וְשָׁ֖ם (and there) יְדַבֵּ֥ר (He spoke) עִמָּֽנוּ׃ (with us).

5  וַֽיהוָ֖ה (And YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (God) הַצְּבָא֑וֹת (of Hosts);

יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH is) זִכְרֽוֹ׃ (His memorial).

6  וְאַתָּ֖ה (And you) בֵּאלֹהֶ֣יךָ (to your God), תָשׁ֑וּב (must return)

חֶ֤סֶד (love) וּמִשְׁפָּט֙ (and justice), שְׁמֹ֔ר (Keep)

וְקַוֵּ֥ה (and wait) אֶל־ (for) אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ (your God) תָּמִֽיד׃ (continually).

7  כְּנַ֗עַן (A Canaanite), בְּיָד֛וֹ (in his hand); מֹאזְנֵ֥י (are the scales) מִרְמָ֖ה (of deceit)

לַעֲשֹׁ֥ק (to oppress) אָהֵֽב׃ (he loves).

8  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said), אֶפְרַ֔יִם (Ephraim) אַ֣ךְ (Surely) עָשַׁ֔רְתִּי (I have become rich),

מָצָ֥אתִי (I have found) א֖וֹן (wealth); לִ֑י (for myself)

כָּל־ (In all) יְגִיעַ֕י (my labors) לֹ֥א (no) יִמְצְאוּ־ (they will find)

לִ֖י (in me) עָוֺ֥ן (iniquity) אֲשֶׁר־ (that is) חֵֽטְא׃ (sin).

9  וְאָנֹכִ֛י (And I am) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ (your God)

מֵאֶ֣רֶץ (from the land) מִצְרָ֑יִם (of Egypt)

עֹ֛ד (again) אוֹשִֽׁיבְךָ֥ (I will make you dwell) בָאֳהָלִ֖ים (in tents),

כִּימֵ֥י (like the days) מוֹעֵֽד׃ (of the appointed time).

10  וְדִבַּ֙רְתִּי֙ (And I have spoken) עַל־ (by) הַנְּבִיאִ֔ים (the prophets),

וְאָנֹכִ֖י (and I) חָז֣וֹן (visions), הִרְבֵּ֑יתִי (have multiplied)

וּבְיַ֥ד (and by the hand) הַנְּבִיאִ֖ים (of the prophets). אֲדַמֶּֽה׃ (I have given parables),

11  אִם־ (If) גִּלְעָ֥ד (in Gilead)? אָ֙וֶן֙ (There are idols)

אַךְ־ (surely) שָׁ֣וְא (worthless). הָי֔וּ (They are)

בַּגִּלְגָּ֖ל (In Gilgal); שְׁוָרִ֣ים (bulls) זִבֵּ֑חוּ (they sacrifice)

גַּ֤ם (even though), מִזְבְּחוֹתָם֙ (their altars) כְּגַלִּ֔ים (are as heaps)

עַ֖ל (over) תַּלְמֵ֥י (the furrows) שָׂדָֽי׃ (of the field).

12  וַיִּבְרַ֥ח (And fled) יַעֲקֹ֖ב (Jacob) שְׂדֵ֣ה (to the land) אֲרָ֑ם (of Aram),

וַיַּעֲבֹ֤ד (and worked) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (Israel) בְּאִשָּׁ֔ה (for a wife),

וּבְאִשָּׁ֖ה (and for a wife) שָׁמָֽר׃ (he tended).

13  וּבְנָבִ֕יא (And by a prophet) הֶעֱלָ֧ה (brought up) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (Israel) מִמִּצְרָ֑יִם (from Egypt)

וּבְנָבִ֖יא (and by a prophet) נִשְׁמָֽר׃ (he was kept).

14  הִכְעִ֥יס (Has provoked to anger) אֶפְרַ֖יִם (Ephraim) תַּמְרוּרִ֑ים (bitterly);

וְדָמָיו֙ (and his bloodguilt) עָלָ֣יו (upon him) יִטּ֔וֹשׁ (He will leave)

וְחֶ֨רְפָּת֔וֹ (and his reproach) יָשִׁ֥יב (will make return) ל֖וֹ (to him) אֲדֹנָֽיו׃ (his Lord).
