Out of Egypt I Called My Son
(Matthew 2:13–15)

1  כִּ֛י (When) נַ֥עַר (a child), יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (Israel was) וָאֹהֲבֵ֑הוּ (and I loved him)

וּמִמִּצְרַ֖יִם (and out of Egypt) קָרָ֥אתִי (I called) לִבְנִֽי׃ (My son).

2  קָרְא֖וּ (They called) לָהֶ֑ם (to them)

כֵּ֚ן (so) הָלְכ֣וּ (they went away) מִפְּנֵיהֶ֔ם (from their faces)

לַבְּעָלִ֣ים (to the Baals), יְזַבֵּ֔חוּ (they sacrificed)

וְלַפְּסִלִ֖ים (and to the carved images) יְקַטֵּרֽוּן׃ (they burned incense).

3  וְאָנֹכִ֤י (And I) תִרְגַּ֙לְתִּי֙ (had guided the feet) לְאֶפְרַ֔יִם (of Ephraim)

קָחָ֖ם (taking them) עַל־ (by) זְרֽוֹעֹתָ֑יו (the arms);

וְלֹ֥א (not) יָדְע֖וּ (they did know)

כִּ֥י (that it was) רְפָאתִֽים׃ (I who healed them).

4  בְּחַבְלֵ֨י (With cords) אָדָ֤ם (of humanity), אֶמְשְׁכֵם֙ (I drew them)

בַּעֲבֹת֣וֹת (with bands) אַהֲבָ֔ה (of love),

וָאֶהְיֶ֥ה (and I was) לָהֶ֛ם (to them) כִּמְרִ֥ימֵי (like those lifting) עֹ֖ל (the yoke) עַ֣ל (up from) לְחֵיהֶ֑ם (their jaws),

וְאַ֥ט (and I bent down) אֵלָ֖יו (to them) אוֹכִֽיל׃ (to let them eat).

5  לֹ֤א (Not) יָשׁוּב֙ (will he return) אֶל־ (to) אֶ֣רֶץ (the land) מִצְרַ֔יִם (of Egypt),

וְאַשּׁ֖וּר (and Assyria) ה֣וּא (it) מַלְכּ֑וֹ (will be his king),

כִּ֥י (because) מֵאֲנ֖וּ (they refused) לָשֽׁוּב׃ (to return).

6  וְחָלָ֥ה (And will twist) חֶ֙רֶב֙ (the sword) בְּעָרָ֔יו (through his cities),

וְכִלְּתָ֥ה (and will finish off) בַדָּ֖יו (his bars),

וְאָכָ֑לָה (and will devour) מִֽמֹּעֲצ֖וֹתֵיהֶֽם׃ (their counseling).

7  וְעַמִּ֥י (And My people) תְלוּאִ֖ים (are bent) לִמְשֽׁוּבָתִ֑י (on turning away from Me)

וְאֶל־ (though to) עַל֙ (the Most High), יִקְרָאֻ֔הוּ (they call to Him)

יַ֖חַד (at all) לֹ֥א (not) יְרוֹמֵם׃ (He will exalt them).

8  אֵ֞יךְ (How) אֶתֶּנְךָ֣ (can I give you up), אֶפְרַ֗יִם (O Ephraim)?

אֲמַגֶּנְךָ֙ (Can I deliver you up) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (O Israel)?

אֵ֚יךְ (How) אֶתֶּנְךָ֣ (can I make you) כְאַדְמָ֔ה (like Admah)?

אֲשִֽׂימְךָ֖ (Can I make you) כִּצְבֹאיִ֑ם (like Zeboiim)?

נֶהְפַּ֤ךְ (Is turned over) עָלַי֙ (within Me) לִבִּ֔י (My heart)

יַ֖חַד (together) נִכְמְר֥וּ (are kindled) נִחוּמָֽי׃ (My compassions).

9  לֹ֤א (Not) אֶֽעֱשֶׂה֙ (I will act) חֲר֣וֹן (in the burning) אַפִּ֔י (of My anger),

לֹ֥א (not) אָשׁ֖וּב (I will turn back) לְשַׁחֵ֣ת (to destroy) אֶפְרָ֑יִם (Ephraim);

כִּ֣י (for) אֵ֤ל (God), אָֽנֹכִי֙ (I am) וְלֹא־ (and not) אִ֔ישׁ (a man)

בְּקִרְבְּךָ֣ (in your midst) קָד֔וֹשׁ (the Holy One)

וְלֹ֥א (and not) אָב֖וֹא (I will come) בְּעִֽיר׃ (in enmity).

10  אַחֲרֵ֧י (After) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH), יֵלְכ֖וּ (they shall walk)

כְּאַרְיֵ֣ה (like a lion); יִשְׁאָ֑ג (He will roar)

כִּֽי־ (when) ה֣וּא (He) יִשְׁאַ֔ג (roars),

וְיֶחֶרְד֥וּ (and will come trembling) בָנִ֖ים (the sons) מִיָּֽם׃ (from the west).

11  יֶחֶרְד֤וּ (They will come trembling) כְצִפּוֹר֙ (like a bird) מִמִּצְרַ֔יִם (from Egypt)

וּכְיוֹנָ֖ה (and like a dove) מֵאֶ֣רֶץ (from the land) אַשּׁ֑וּר (of Assyria);

וְהוֹשַׁבְתִּ֥ים (and I will let them dwell) עַל־ (in) בָּתֵּיהֶ֖ם (their homes),

נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָֽה׃ס (of YHWH).

12  סְבָבֻ֤נִי (Has surrounded Me) בְכַ֙חַשׁ֙ (with lies), אֶפְרַ֔יִם (Ephraim)

וּבְמִרְמָ֖ה (and with deceit); בֵּ֣ית (the house) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel)

וִֽיהוּדָ֗ה (and Judah) עֹ֥ד (still) רָד֙ (wanders restlessly) עִם־ (with) אֵ֔ל (God),

וְעִם־ (and with) קְדוֹשִׁ֖ים (the holy ones) נֶאֱמָֽן׃ (is faithful).
