Retribution for Israel’s Sin

1  גֶּ֤פֶן (A vine), בּוֹקֵק֙ (luxuriant was) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (Israel)

פְּרִ֖י (fruit) יְשַׁוֶּה־ (he set forth) לּ֑וֹ (for himself)

כְּרֹ֣ב (with the increase) לְפִרְי֗וֹ (of his fruit)

הִרְבָּה֙ (he made an increase) לַֽמִּזְבְּח֔וֹת (of the altars);

כְּט֣וֹב (according to the richness) לְאַרְצ֔וֹ (of his land)

הֵיטִ֖יבוּ (they made rich) מַצֵּבֽוֹת׃ (the sacred pillars).

2  חָלַ֥ק (Has been divided); לִבָּ֖ם (their heart)

עַתָּ֣ה (now) יֶאְשָׁ֑מוּ (they are guilty);

ה֚וּא (He) יַעֲרֹ֣ף (will break down) מִזְבְּחוֹתָ֔ם (their altars),

יְשֹׁדֵ֖ד (He will demolish) מַצֵּבוֹתָֽם׃ (their sacred pillars).

3  כִּ֤י (For) עַתָּה֙ (now) יֹֽאמְר֔וּ (they say),

אֵ֥ין (There is no) מֶ֖לֶךְ (king), לָ֑נוּ (for us)

כִּ֣י (because) לֹ֤א (not) יָרֵ֙אנוּ֙ (did we fear) אֶת־ (-) יְהֹוָ֔ה (YHWH);

וְהַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (and as for the king) מַה־ (what) יַּֽעֲשֶׂה־ (could he do) לָּֽנוּ׃ (for us).

4  דִּבְּר֣וּ (They have spoken) דְבָרִ֔ים (words),

אָל֥וֹת (swearing) שָׁ֖וְא (falsely) כָּרֹ֣ת (in cutting) בְּרִ֑ית (a covenant);

וּפָרַ֤ח (and sprouts up) כָּרֹאשׁ֙ (like a poison) מִשְׁפָּ֔ט (judgment)

עַ֖ל (in) תַּלְמֵ֥י (the furrows) שָׂדָֽי׃ (of the field).

5  לְעֶגְלוֹת֙ (For the calf) בֵּ֣ית (of Beth-) אָ֔וֶן (aven).

יָג֖וּרוּ (Fear) שְׁכַ֣ן (the dwellers) שֹֽׁמְר֑וֹן (of Samaria)

כִּי־ (indeed) אָבַ֨ל (mourn) עָלָ֜יו (over it) עַמּ֗וֹ (its people)

וּכְמָרָיו֙ (and its priests) עָלָ֣יו (over it) יָגִ֔ילוּ (who rejoiced)

עַל־ (over) כְּבוֹד֖וֹ (its glory)

כִּֽי־ (that) גָלָ֥ה (has departed) מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃ (from it).

6  גַּם־ (Also) אוֹתוֹ֙ (it) לְאַשּׁ֣וּר (to Assyria) יוּבָ֔ל (will be carried along)

מִנְחָ֖ה (as tribute) לְמֶ֣לֶךְ (for the king) יָרֵ֑ב (to the great);

בָּשְׁנָה֙ (shame), אֶפְרַ֣יִם (Ephraim) יִקָּ֔ח (will receive)

וְיֵב֥וֹשׁ (and will be ashamed) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (Israel) מֵעֲצָתֽוֹ׃ (of his idol).

7  נִדְמֶ֥ה (Will be cut off) שֹׁמְר֖וֹן (Samaria), מַלְכָּ֑הּ (with her king)

כְּקֶ֖צֶף (like a twig) עַל־ (on) פְּנֵי־ (the face) מָֽיִם׃ (of the water).

8  וְנִשְׁמְד֞וּ (And will be destroyed); בָּמ֣וֹת (the high places) אָ֗וֶן (of Aven)

חַטַּאת֙ (the sin) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel),

ק֣וֹץ (the thorn) וְדַרְדַּ֔ר (and thistle) יַעֲלֶ֖ה (will come up) עַל־ (over) מִזְבְּחוֹתָ֑ם (their altars);

וְאָמְר֤וּ (and they will say) לֶֽהָרִים֙ (to the mountains), כַּסּ֔וּנוּ (Cover us)

וְלַגְּבָע֖וֹת (and to the hills), נִפְל֥וּ (Fall) עָלֵֽינוּ׃ס (on us).

9  מִימֵי֙ (From the days) הַגִּבְעָ֔ה (of Gibeah); חָטָ֖אתָ (you have sinned) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (O Israel),

שָׁ֣ם (there) עָמָ֔דוּ (they have stood)!

לֹֽא־ (Not) תַשִּׂיגֵ֧ם (did it overtake them) בַּגִּבְעָ֛ה (in Gibeah)

מִלְחָמָ֖ה (the battle) עַל־ (against) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) עַֽלְוָֽה׃ (of iniquity).

10  בְּאַוָּתִ֖י (When I desire) וְאֶסֳּרֵ֑ם (and I will discipline them)

וְאֻסְּפ֤וּ (and will be gathered) עֲלֵיהֶם֙ (against them) עַמִּ֔ים (peoples)

בְּאָסְרָ֖ם (at My disciplining them)

לִשְׁתֵּ֥י (for the two) עֵינֹתָם׃ (of their transgressions).

11  וְאֶפְרַ֜יִם (And Ephraim is) עֶגְלָ֤ה (a heifer) מְלֻמָּדָה֙ (trained), אֹהַ֣בְתִּי (loving) לָד֔וּשׁ (to thresh)

וַאֲנִ֣י (and I) עָבַ֔רְתִּי (passed over) עַל־ (upon) ט֖וּב (her fair) צַוָּארָ֑הּ (neck)

אַרְכִּ֤יב (I will drive); אֶפְרַ֙יִם֙ (Ephraim) יַחֲר֣וֹשׁ (will plow), יְהוּדָ֔ה (Judah)

יְשַׂדֶּד־ (will harrow) ל֖וֹ (for him) יַעֲקֹֽב׃ (Jacob).

12  זִרְע֨וּ (Sow) לָכֶ֤ם (for yourselves) לִצְדָקָה֙ (unto righteousness),

קִצְר֣וּ (and reap) לְפִי־ (to the mouth) חֶ֔סֶד (of loving devotion);

נִ֥ירוּ (break up) לָכֶ֖ם (for yourself) נִ֑יר (the fallow ground);

וְעֵת֙ (and for it is time) לִדְר֣וֹשׁ (to seek) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH)

עַד־ (until) יָב֕וֹא (He should come)

וְיֹרֶ֥ה (and shower) צֶ֖דֶק (righteousness) לָכֶֽם׃ (upon you⁺).

13  חֲרַשְׁתֶּם־ (You⁺ have plowed) רֶ֛שַׁע (wickedness), עַוְלָ֥תָה (injustice); קְצַרְתֶּ֖ם (you⁺ have reaped)

אֲכַלְתֶּ֣ם (you⁺ have eaten) פְּרִי־ (the fruit) כָ֑חַשׁ (of lies).

כִּֽי־ (Because) בָטַ֥חְתָּ (you trusted) בְדַרְכְּךָ֖ (in your own way),

בְּרֹ֥ב (in the multitude) גִּבּוֹרֶֽיךָ׃ (of your mighty men).

14  וְקָ֣אם (Therefore will arise) שָׁאוֹן֮ (an uproar) בְּעַמֶּךָ֒ (among your people),

וְכָל־ (and all) מִבְצָרֶ֣יךָ (your fortresses) יוּשַּׁ֔ד (will be destroyed),

כְּשֹׁ֧ד (like the destruction) שַֽׁלְמַ֛ן (of Shalman) בֵּ֥ית (in Beth-) אַֽרְבֵ֖אל (arbel)

בְּי֣וֹם (on the day) מִלְחָמָ֑ה (of battle),

אֵ֥ם (a mother) עַל־ (upon) בָּנִ֖ים (her children)

רֻטָּֽשָׁה׃ (was dashed to pieces).

15  כָּ֗כָה (So) עָשָׂ֤ה (may He do) לָכֶם֙ (to you⁺) בֵּֽית־ (O Beth-) אֵ֔ל (el)

מִפְּנֵ֖י (from the face) רָעַ֣ת (of evil) רָֽעַתְכֶ֑ם (your⁺ evil);

בַּשַּׁ֕חַר (at dawn) נִדְמֹ֥ה (being cut off) נִדְמָ֖ה (he will be cut off)

מֶ֥לֶךְ (the king) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel).
