Israel’s Punishment

1  אַל־ (Do not), תִּשְׂמַ֨ח (be glad) יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל׀ (O Israel),

אֶל־ (with) גִּיל֙ (rejoicing), כָּֽעַמִּ֔ים (like peoples)!

כִּ֥י (For) זָנִ֖יתָ (you have prostitute yourself) מֵעַ֣ל (against) אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ (your God),

אָהַ֣בְתָּ (you have made love) אֶתְנָ֔ן (for hire) עַ֖ל (on) כָּל־ (all the) גָּרְנ֥וֹת (floors) דָּגָֽן׃ (of threshing).

2  גֹּ֥רֶן (The threshing floor) וָיֶ֖קֶב (and winepress) לֹ֣א (will not) יִרְעֵ֑ם (feed them)

וְתִיר֖וֹשׁ (and the new wine) יְכַ֥חֶשׁ (will fail) בָּֽהּ׃ (in her).

3  לֹ֥א (Not) יֵשְׁב֖וּ (will they dwell)

בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in the land); יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH)

וְשָׁ֤ב (and will return) אֶפְרַ֙יִם֙ (Ephraim) מִצְרַ֔יִם (to Egypt),

וּבְאַשּׁ֖וּר (and in Assyria) טָמֵ֥א (unclean things) יֹאכֵֽלוּ׃ (will eat).

4  לֹא־ (Not) יִסְּכ֨וּ (they will pour out) לַיהוָ֥ה׀ (to YHWH), יַיִן֮ (wine)

וְלֹ֣א (and not) יֶֽעֶרְבוּ־ (will be pleasng) לוֹ֒ (to Him) זִבְחֵיהֶ֗ם (their sacrifices)

כְּלֶ֤חֶם (like the bread) אוֹנִים֙ (of mourners); לָהֶ֔ם (to them)

כָּל־ (all) אֹכְלָ֖יו (those eating it) יִטַמָּ֑אוּ (will be defiled),

כִּֽי־ (for) לַחְמָ֣ם (their bread is) לְנַפְשָׁ֔ם (for their own soul)

לֹ֥א (not) יָב֖וֹא (will it come into) בֵּ֥ית (the house) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).

5  מַֽה־ (What) תַּעֲשׂ֖וּ (will you⁺ do) לְי֣וֹם (on the day), מוֹעֵ֑ד (of the appointed time)

וּלְי֖וֹם (and on the day) חַג־ (of the feast) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH)?

6  כִּֽי־ (For), הִנֵּ֤ה (behold), הָֽלְכוּ֙ (they go away) מִשֹּׁ֔ד (from destruction);

מִצְרַ֥יִם (Egypt) תְּקַבְּצֵ֖ם (will gather them up),

מֹ֣ף (and Memphis) תְּקַבְּרֵ֑ם (will bury them)

מַחְמַ֣ד (and the preciousness) לְכַסְפָּ֗ם (of their silver), קִמּוֹשׂ֙ (the thistles) יִֽירָשֵׁ֔ם (will possess them)

ח֖וֹחַ (thorns) בְּאָהֳלֵיהֶֽם׃ (in their tents).

7  בָּ֣אוּ׀ (Have come in), יְמֵ֣י (the days) הַפְּקֻדָּ֗ה (of punishment)

בָּ֚אוּ (have come in); יְמֵ֣י (the days) הַשִׁלֻּ֔ם (of recompense)

יֵדְע֖וּ (knows) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (Israel)

אֱוִ֣יל (is a fool), הַנָּבִ֗יא (the prophet)

מְשֻׁגָּע֙ (is insane), אִ֣ישׁ (the man) הָר֔וּחַ (of the spirit)

עַ֚ל (over) רֹ֣ב (the abundance) עֲוֺנְךָ֔ (of your iniquity),

וְרַבָּ֖ה (and the greatness) מַשְׂטֵמָֽה׃ (of your hatred).

8  צֹפֶ֥ה (The one watching) אֶפְרַ֖יִם (Ephraim) עִם־ (is with) אֱלֹהָ֑י (my God), נָבִ֞יא (the prophet)

פַּ֤ח (a snare) יָקוֹשׁ֙ (of a fowler) עַל־ (is on) כָּל־ (all) דְּרָכָ֔יו (his paths),

מַשְׂטֵמָ֖ה (and hatred) בְּבֵ֥ית (is in the house) אֱלֹהָֽיו׃ (of his God).

9  הֶעְמִֽיקוּ־ (They have sunk deep) שִׁחֵ֖תוּ (corrupting themselves)

כִּימֵ֣י (as in the days) הַגִּבְעָ֑ה (of Gibeah);

יִזְכּ֣וֹר (He will remember) עֲוֺנָ֔ם (their iniquity),

יִפְק֖וֹד (He will attend to) חַטֹּאותָֽם׃ס (their sins).

10  כַּעֲנָבִ֣ים (Like grapes) בַּמִּדְבָּ֗ר (in the wilderness); מָצָ֙אתִי֙ (I found) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (Israel)

כְּבִכּוּרָ֤ה (as the firstfruits) בִתְאֵנָה֙ (on the fig tree) בְּרֵ֣אשִׁיתָ֔הּ (in its first season);

רָאִ֖יתִי (I saw) אֲבֽוֹתֵיכֶ֑ם (your⁺ fathers)

הֵ֜מָּה (they) בָּ֣אוּ (went) בַֽעַל־ (to Baal-) פְּע֗וֹר (peor),

וַיִּנָּֽזְרוּ֙ (and dedicated themselves) לַבֹּ֔שֶׁת (to that shame);

וַיִּהְי֥וּ (and they became) שִׁקּוּצִ֖ים (as detestable)

כְּאָהֳבָֽם׃ (as that which they loved).

11  אֶפְרַ֕יִם (As for Ephraim), כָּע֖וֹף (like a bird), יִתְעוֹפֵ֣ף (will fly away) כְּבוֹדָ֑ם (their glory)

מִלֵּדָ֥ה (from the birth), וּמִבֶּ֖טֶן (and from the belly), וּמֵהֵרָיֽוֹן׃ (and from conceiving).

12  כִּ֤י (Even), אִם־ (if) יְגַדְּלוּ֙ (they bring up) אֶת־ (-) בְּנֵיהֶ֔ם (their sons),

וְשִׁכַּלְתִּ֖ים (I will bereave them) מֵֽאָדָ֑ם (of each man)

כִּֽי־ (yes) גַם־ (indeed) א֥וֹי (woe) לָהֶ֖ם (to them)

בְּשׂוּרִ֥י (at My turning away) מֵהֶֽם׃ (from them).

13  אֶפְרַ֛יִם (Ephraim), כַּאֲשֶׁר־ (as) רָאִ֥יתִי (I have seen) לְצ֖וֹר (like Tyre),

שְׁתוּלָ֣ה (is planted) בְנָוֶ֑ה (in a pleasant place);

וְאֶפְרַ֕יִם (and Ephraim) לְהוֹצִ֥יא (will bring out)

אֶל־ (to) הֹרֵ֖ג (one who slaughters) בָּנָֽיו׃ (his children).

14  תֵּן־ (Give) לָהֶ֥ם (to them) יְהוָ֖ה (O YHWH);

מַה־ (what) תִּתֵּ֑ן (will You give)?

תֵּן־ (Give) לָהֶם֙ (to them) רֶ֣חֶם (a womb) מַשְׁכִּ֔יל (miscarrying)

וְשָׁדַ֖יִם (and breasts) צֹמְקִֽים׃ (dry).

15  כָּל־ (Because of all) רָעָתָ֤ם (their wickedness) בַּגִּלְגָּל֙ (in Gilgal);

כִּֽי־ (for) שָׁ֣ם (there) שְׂנֵאתִ֔ים (I came to hate them)

עַ֚ל (because) רֹ֣עַ (of the evil) מַֽעַלְלֵיהֶ֔ם (of their deeds)

מִבֵּיתִ֖י (from My house), אֲגָרְשֵׁ֑ם (I will drive them out)

לֹ֤א (not) אוֹסֵף֙ (will I continue); אַהֲבָתָ֔ם (to love them)

כָּל־ (all) שָׂרֵיהֶ֖ם (their princes) סֹרְרִֽים׃ (are rebellious).

16  הֻכָּ֣ה (Is stricken), אֶפְרַ֔יִם (Ephraim)

שָׁרְשָׁ֥ם (their root) יָבֵ֖שׁ (has withered),

פְּרִ֣י (fruit). בְלִי (Not) יַעֲשׂ֑וּן (they will bear)

גַּ֚ם (even), כִּ֣י (if) יֵֽלֵד֔וּן (they give birth),

וְהֵמַתִּ֖י (I will kill) מַחֲמַדֵּ֥י (the precious ones) בִטְנָֽם׃ס (of their womb).

17  יִמְאָסֵ֣ם (Will reject them), אֱלֹהַ֔י (My God)

כִּ֛י (because) לֹ֥א (not) שָׁמְע֖וּ (did they listen) ל֑וֹ (to Him)

וְיִהְי֥וּ (and they will be) נֹדְדִ֖ים (wanderers)

בַּגּוֹיִֽם׃ס (among the nations).
