Israel Will Reap the Whirlwind

1  אֶל־ (To) חִכְּךָ֣ (your mouth). שֹׁפָ֔ר (Set the shofar)

כַּנֶּ֖שֶׁר (as an eagle) עַל־ (over) בֵּ֣ית (the house) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH),

יַ֚עַן (because) עָבְר֣וּ (they have transgressed) בְרִיתִ֔י (My covenant),

וְעַל־ (and against) תּוֹרָתִ֖י (My law) פָּשָֽׁעוּ׃ (they have rebelled).

2  לִ֖י (To Me) יִזְעָ֑קוּ (they cry) אֱלֹהַ֥י (O My God),

יְֽדַעֲנ֖וּךָ (we know You) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (Israel).

3  זָנַ֥ח (Has rejected) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (Israel) ט֑וֹב (the good);

אוֹיֵ֖ב (an enemy) יִרְדְּֽפוֹ׃ (will pursue him).

4  הֵ֤ם (They) הִמְלִיכוּ֙ (set up kings), וְלֹ֣א (not) מִמֶּ֔נִּי (from Me)

הֵשִׂ֖ירוּ (they made princes), וְלֹ֣א (not ones); יָדָ֑עְתִּי (I knew)

כַּסְפָּ֣ם (With their silver) וּזְהָבָ֗ם (and gold) עָשׂ֤וּ (they made) לָהֶם֙ (for themselves) עֲצַבִּ֔ים (idols),

לְמַ֖עַן (that) יִכָּרֵֽת׃ (it might be cut off).

5  זָנַח֙ (He has rejected); עֶגְלֵ֣ךְ (your calf), שֹֽׁמְר֔וֹן (O Samaria),

חָרָ֥ה (burns) אַפִּ֖י (My anger) בָּ֑ם (against them)

עַד־ (until) מָתַ֕י (when) לֹ֥א (not)

יוּכְל֖וּ (will they be capable) נִקָּיֹֽן׃ (of innocence)?

6  כִּ֤י (For) מִיִּשְׂרָאֵל֙ (from Israel) וְה֔וּא (it is)

חָרָ֣שׁ (a workman) עָשָׂ֔הוּ (made it) וְלֹ֥א (and not) אֱלֹהִ֖ים (God); ה֑וּא (it is);

כִּֽי־ (Surely) שְׁבָבִ֣ים (broken to pieces). יִֽהְיֶ֔ה (Will be)

עֵ֖גֶל (the calf) שֹׁמְרֽוֹן׃ (of Samaria).

7  כִּ֛י (For) ר֥וּחַ (the wind), יִזְרָ֖עוּ (they sow)

וְסוּפָ֣תָה (and the whirlwind). יִקְצֹ֑רוּ (They shall reap)

קָמָ֣ה (the stalk); אֵֽין־ (is not) ל֗וֹ (unto it)

צֶ֚מַח (a shoot) בְּלִ֣י (not) יַֽעֲשֶׂה־ (yielding) קֶּ֔מַח (flour).

אוּלַ֣י (Even if) יַֽעֲשֶׂ֔ה (it should produce),

זָרִ֖ים (strangers) יִבְלָעֻֽהוּ׃ (would swallow it up).

8  נִבְלַ֖ע (Is swallowed up); יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (Israel)

עַתָּה֙ (now) הָי֣וּ (they are) בַגּוֹיִ֔ם (among the Gentiles)

כִּכְלִ֖י (like a vessel) אֵֽין־ (with no) חֵ֥פֶץ (delight) בּֽוֹ׃ (in it).

9  כִּֽי־ (For) הֵ֙מָּה֙ (they) עָל֣וּ (have gone up) אַשּׁ֔וּר (to Assyria),

פֶּ֖רֶא (a wild donkey) בּוֹדֵ֣ד (isolated) ל֑וֹ (by himself)

אֶפְרַ֖יִם (Ephraim) הִתְנ֥וּ (they have hired) אֲהָבִֽים (lovers).

10  גַּ֛ם (Even), כִּֽי־ (though) יִתְנ֥וּ (they have hired) בַגּוֹיִ֖ם (among the nations),

עַתָּ֣ה (now) אֲקַבְּצֵ֑ם (I will gather them)

וַיָּחֵ֣לּוּ (and they will begin) מְּעָ֔ט (to diminish)

מִמַּשָּׂ֖א (from the burden) מֶ֥לֶךְ (of the king) שָׂרִֽים׃ (of princes).

11  כִּֽי־ (Because) הִרְבָּ֥ה (has multiplied) אֶפְרַ֛יִם (Ephraim) מִזְבְּחֹ֖ת (altars) לַחֲטֹ֑א (for sin),

הָיוּ־ (they have become) ל֥וֹ (unto him) מִזְבְּח֖וֹת (altars) לַחֲטֹֽא׃ (for sinning).

12  אֶכְתּוֹב (Were I to write) ל֔וֹ (for him) רִבּוֹ (the myriad things) תּֽוֹרָתִ֑י (of My law),

כְּמוֹ־ (as) זָ֖ר (a strange thing) נֶחְשָֽׁבוּ׃ (they would be regarded).

13  זִבְחֵ֣י (The sacrifices) הַבְהָבַ֗י (of My gifts), יִזְבְּח֤וּ (they do sacrifice)

בָשָׂר֙ (and the flesh) וַיֹּאכֵ֔לוּ (and they eat)

יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) לֹ֣א (not); רָצָ֑ם (does accept them)

עַתָּ֞ה (now) יִזְכֹּ֤ר (He has in mind) עֲוֺנָם֙ (their iniquity), וְיִפְקֹ֣ד (and He will attend to) חַטֹּאותָ֔ם (their sins);

הֵ֖מָּה (they) מִצְרַ֥יִם (to Egypt) יָשֽׁוּבוּ׃ (will return).

14  וַיִּשְׁכַּ֨ח (And has forgotten) יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל (Israel) אֶת־ (-) עֹשֵׂ֗הוּ (his Maker), וַיִּ֙בֶן֙ (and has built) הֵֽיכָל֔וֹת (palaces);

וִֽיהוּדָ֕ה (and Judah) הִרְבָּ֖ה (has multiplied) עָרִ֣ים (cities), בְּצֻר֑וֹת (fortified)

וְשִׁלַּחְתִּי־ (and I will send) אֵ֣שׁ (fire) בְּעָרָ֔יו (upon his cities),

וְאָכְלָ֖ה (and it will devour) אַרְמְנֹתֶֽיהָ׃ס (his palaces).
