Moab Seduces Israel
(1 Corinthians 10:1–13)

1  וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב (And remained) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (Israel) בַּשִּׁטִּ֑ים (in Shittim), וַיָּ֣חֶל (and began) הָעָ֔ם (the people) לִזְנ֖וֹת (to prostitute themselves) אֶל־ (with) בְּנ֥וֹת (the daughters) מוֹאָֽב׃ (of Moab). 2  וַתִּקְרֶ֣אןָ (And they invited) לָעָ֔ם (the people) לְזִבְחֵ֖י (to the sacrifices) אֱלֹהֵיהֶ֑ן (of their gods), וַיֹּ֣אכַל (and ate) הָעָ֔ם (the people) וַיִּֽשְׁתַּחֲוּ֖וּ (and bowed down) לֵֽאלֹהֵיהֶֽן׃ (to their gods). 3  וַיִּצָּ֥מֶד (And was joined) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (Israel) לְבַ֣עַל (to Baal) פְּע֑וֹר (of Peor), וַיִּֽחַר־ (and was kindled) אַ֥ף (the anger) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) בְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (against Israel).

4  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֗ה (Moses), קַ֚ח (Take) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) רָאשֵׁ֣י (the leaders) הָעָ֔ם (of the people) וְהוֹקַ֥ע (and hang) אוֹתָ֛ם (the offenders) לַיהוָ֖ה (before YHWH) נֶ֣גֶד (out in) הַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ (the sun), וְיָשֹׁ֛ב (that may turn away) חֲר֥וֹן (that the burning) אַף־ (of the nose) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) מִיִּשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (from Israel).

5  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And said) מֹשֶׁ֔ה (Moses) אֶל־ (to) שֹׁפְטֵ֖י (the judges) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel), הִרְגוּ֙ (Must kill) אִ֣ישׁ (each man) אֲנָשָׁ֔יו (his men) הַנִּצְמָדִ֖ים (who were joined) לְבַ֥עַל (to Baal) פְּעֽוֹר׃ (of Peor).

The Zeal of Phinehas

6  וְהִנֵּ֡ה (And indeed), אִישׁ֩ (one) מִבְּנֵ֨י (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל (of Israel) בָּ֗א (came) וַיַּקְרֵ֤ב (and presented) אֶל־ (to) אֶחָיו֙ (his brothers) אֶת־ (-) הַמִּדְיָנִ֔ית (a Midianitess) לְעֵינֵ֣י (before the eyes) מֹשֶׁ֔ה (of Moses), וּלְעֵינֵ֖י (and before the eyes) כָּל־ (of all) עֲדַ֣ת (the congregation) בְּנֵי־ (of the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel), וְהֵ֣מָּה (and they were) בֹכִ֔ים (weeping) פֶּ֖תַח (at the door) אֹ֥הֶל (of the Tent) מוֹעֵֽד׃ (of Meeting). 7  וַיַּ֗רְא (And saw it) פִּֽינְחָס֙ (Phinehas) בֶּן־ (son) אֶלְעָזָ֔ר (of Eleazar), בֶּֽן־ (son) אַהֲרֹ֖ן (of Aaron) הַכֹּהֵ֑ן (the priest), וַיָּ֙קָם֙ (and he rose) מִתּ֣וֹךְ (from the midst) הָֽעֵדָ֔ה (of the congregation) וַיִּקַּ֥ח (and he took) רֹ֖מַח (a spear) בְּיָדֽוֹ׃ (in his hand), 8  וַ֠יָּבֹא (and he went) אַחַ֨ר (after) אִֽישׁ־ (the man) יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל (of Israel) אֶל־ (into) הַקֻּבָּ֗ה (the tent) וַיִּדְקֹר֙ (and thrust through) אֶת־ (-) שְׁנֵיהֶ֔ם (the two of them), אֵ֚ת (-) אִ֣ישׁ (the man) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) וְאֶת־ (and) הָאִשָּׁ֖ה (the woman) אֶל־ (through) קֳבָתָ֑הּ (her body).

וַתֵּֽעָצַר֙ (And was stopped) הַמַּגֵּפָ֔ה (the plague) מֵעַ֖ל (among) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel). 9  וַיִּהְי֕וּ (And were) הַמֵּתִ֖ים (those who died) בַּמַּגֵּפָ֑ה (in the plague) אַרְבָּעָ֥ה (four) וְעֶשְׂרִ֖ים (and twenty) אָֽלֶף׃פ (thousand).

10  וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר (And spoke) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֥ה (Moses), לֵּאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 11  פִּֽינְחָ֨ס (Phinehas) בֶּן־ (son) אֶלְעָזָ֜ר (of Eleazar), בֶּן־ (the son) אַהֲרֹ֣ן (of Aaron) הַכֹּהֵ֗ן (the priest), הֵשִׁ֤יב (has turned back) אֶת־ (-) חֲמָתִי֙ (My wrath) מֵעַ֣ל (from) בְּנֵֽי־ (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), בְּקַנְא֥וֹ (because he was zealous) אֶת־ (-) קִנְאָתִ֖י (with My zeal) בְּתוֹכָ֑ם (in their midst), וְלֹא־ (so that not) כִלִּ֥יתִי (I did consume) אֶת־ (-) בְּנֵֽי־ (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) בְּקִנְאָתִֽי׃ (in My zeal). 12  לָכֵ֖ן (Therefore) אֱמֹ֑ר (say) הִנְנִ֨י (behold) נֹתֵ֥ן (I give) ל֛וֹ (to him) אֶת־ (-) בְּרִיתִ֖י (My covenant) שָׁלֽוֹם׃ (of peace). 13  וְהָ֤יְתָה (And it shall be) לּוֹ֙ (to him) וּלְזַרְע֣וֹ (and his seed) אַחֲרָ֔יו (after him) בְּרִ֖ית (a covenant) כְּהֻנַּ֣ת (of a priesthood) עוֹלָ֑ם (everlasting), תַּ֗חַת (upon) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that) קִנֵּא֙ (he was zealous) לֵֽאלֹהָ֔יו (for his God) וַיְכַפֵּ֖ר (and made atonement) עַל־ (upon) בְּנֵ֥י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel).

14  וְשֵׁם֩ (And the name) אִ֨ישׁ (of the man) יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל (of Israel) הַמֻּכֶּ֗ה (who was killed), אֲשֶׁ֤ר (even who) הֻכָּה֙ (was killed) אֶת־ (with) הַמִּדְיָנִ֔ית (the Midianitess), זִמְרִ֖י (was Zimri) בֶּן־ (son) סָל֑וּא (of Salu), נְשִׂ֥יא (a leader) בֵֽית־ (of a house) אָ֖ב (of a father) לַשִּׁמְעֹנִֽי׃ (of the Simeonite). 15  וְשֵׁ֨ם (And the name) הָֽאִשָּׁ֧ה (of the woman) הַמֻּכָּ֛ה (who was killed), הַמִּדְיָנִ֖ית (the Midianitess), כָּזְבִּ֣י (was Cozbi) בַת־ (the daughter) צ֑וּר (of Zur); רֹ֣אשׁ (head) אֻמּ֥וֹת (of a tribe) בֵּֽית־ (of a house) אָ֛ב (of a father) בְּמִדְיָ֖ן (in Midian) הֽוּא׃פ (he was).

16  וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר (And spoke) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (to) מֹשֶׁ֥ה (Moses), לֵּאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 17  צָר֖וֹר (Harass) אֶת־ (-) הַמִּדְיָנִ֑ים (the Midianites) וְהִכִּיתֶ֖ם (and strike) אוֹתָֽם׃ (them). 18  כִּ֣י (For) צֹרְרִ֥ים (harassed) הֵם֙ (they) לָכֶ֔ם (you⁺) בְּנִכְלֵיהֶ֛ם (with their schemes) אֲשֶׁר־ (by which) נִכְּל֥וּ (they seduced) לָכֶ֖ם (you⁺) עַל־ (in) דְּבַר־ (the matter) פְּע֑וֹר (of Peor) וְעַל־ (and in) דְּבַ֞ר (the matter) כָּזְבִּ֨י (of Cozbi), בַת־ (the daughter) נְשִׂ֤יא (of a leader) מִדְיָן֙ (of Midian), אֲחֹתָ֔ם (their sister), הַמֻּכָּ֥ה (who was killed) בְיוֹם־ (in the day) הַמַּגֵּפָ֖ה (of the plague) עַל־ (over) דְּבַר־ (the matter) פְּעֽוֹר׃ (of Peor).
