A Call to Repentance
(Joel 1:13–20; Amos 5:4–15; Luke 13:1–5)
1 הִֽתְקוֹשְׁשׁ֖וּ (Gather together), וָק֑וֹשּׁוּ (and gather together),
הַגּ֖וֹי (O nation) לֹ֥א (not) נִכְסָֽף׃ (desired);
2 בְּטֶ֙רֶם֙ (before) לֶ֣דֶת (the bringing forth), חֹ֔ק (of the decree)
כְּמֹ֖ץ (like chaff), עָ֣בַר (passes) י֑וֹם (the day)
בְּטֶ֣רֶם׀ (while) לֹא־ (not) יָב֣וֹא (comes) עֲלֵיכֶ֗ם (upon you⁺) חֲרוֹן֙ (the burning) אַף־ (of the anger) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH)
בְּטֶ֙רֶם֙ (while) לֹא־ (not) יָב֣וֹא (comes) עֲלֵיכֶ֔ם (upon you⁺) י֖וֹם (the day) אַף־ (of the anger) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).
3 בַּקְּשׁ֤וּ (Seek) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH), כָּל־ (all) עַנְוֵ֣י (humble ones) הָאָ֔רֶץ (of the earth),
אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who) מִשְׁפָּט֖וֹ (His justice); פָּעָ֑לוּ (have done)
בַּקְּשׁוּ־ (seek) צֶ֙דֶק֙ (righteousness), בַּקְּשׁ֣וּ (seek) עֲנָוָ֔ה (humility).
אוּלַי֙ (Perhaps) תִּסָּ֣תְר֔וּ (you⁺ will be hidden away)
בְּי֖וֹם (on the day) אַף־ (of the nose) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).
Judgment on the Philistines
(Jeremiah 47:1–7)
4 כִּ֤י (For) עַזָּה֙ (Gaza) עֲזוּבָ֣ה (forsaken), תִֽהְיֶ֔ה (will be)
וְאַשְׁקְל֖וֹן (and Ashkelon) לִשְׁמָמָ֑ה (as a desolation);
אַשְׁדּ֗וֹד (Ashdod) בַּֽצָּהֳרַ֙יִם֙ (at noon), יְגָ֣רְשׁ֔וּהָ (they will drive out)
וְעֶקְר֖וֹן (and Ekron) תֵּעָקֵֽר׃ס (will be uprooted).
5 ה֗וֹי (Woe to) יֹֽשְׁבֵ֛י (those dwelling) חֶ֥בֶל (on the coast), הַיָּ֖ם (of the sea)
גּ֣וֹי (O nation) כְּרֵתִ֑ים (of Cherethites)!
דְּבַר־ (The word) יְהוָ֣ה (of YHWH) עֲלֵיכֶ֗ם (is against you⁺)
כְּנַ֙עַן֙ (O Canaan), אֶ֣רֶץ (land) פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים (of the Philistines),
וְהַאֲבַדְתִּ֖יךְ (And I will make you perish)
מֵאֵ֥ין (and no one will be) יוֹשֵֽׁב׃ (dwelling).
6 וְֽהָיְתָ֞ה (Will become) חֶ֣בֶל (and the coast) הַיָּ֗ם (of the sea) נְוֺ֛ת (pastures)
כְּרֹ֥ת (with wells) רֹעִ֖ים (for shepherds), וְגִדְר֥וֹת (and folds) צֹֽאן׃ (the flock).
7 וְהָ֣יָה (And will be) חֶ֗בֶל (and the coast) לִשְׁאֵרִ֛ית (for the remnant) בֵּ֥ית (of the house) יְהוּדָ֖ה (of Judah);
עֲלֵיהֶ֣ם (upon them); יִרְע֑וּן (they will shepherd)
בְּבָתֵּ֣י (and in the houses) אַשְׁקְל֗וֹן (of Ashkelon)
בָּעֶ֙רֶב֙ (in the evening); יִרְבָּצ֔וּן (they will lie down)
כִּ֧י (for) יִפְקְדֵ֛ם (will attend to them) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיהֶ֖ם (their God)
וְשָׁ֥ב (and turn back) שְׁבוּתָם׃ (their captivity).
Judgment on Moab and Ammon
(Isaiah 16:1–14; Jeremiah 48:1–47)
8 שָׁמַ֙עְתִּי֙ (I have heard) חֶרְפַּ֣ת (the reproach) מוֹאָ֔ב (of Moab),
וְגִדּוּפֵ֖י (and the insults) בְּנֵ֣י (of the sons) עַמּ֑וֹן (of Ammon),
אֲשֶׁ֤ר (with which) חֵֽרְפוּ֙ (they have scorned) אֶת־ (-) עַמִּ֔י (My people),
וַיַּגְדִּ֖ילוּ (and magnified themselves) עַל־ (against) גְּבוּלָֽם׃ (their border).
9 לָכֵ֣ן (Therefore) חַי־ (as live), אָ֡נִי (I)
נְאֻם֩ (a declaration) יְהוָ֨ה (of YHWH of) צְבָא֜וֹת (Hosts),
אֱלֹהֵ֣י (the God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel),
כִּֽי־ (Surely) מוֹאָ֞ב (Moab) כִּסְדֹ֤ם (like Sodom), תִּֽהְיֶה֙ (will become)
וּבְנֵ֤י (and the sons) עַמּוֹן֙ (of Ammon) כַּֽעֲמֹרָ֔ה (like Gomorrah),
מִמְשַׁ֥ק (a possession) חָר֛וּל (of the nettle), וּמִכְרֵה־ (and the pit) מֶ֥לַח (of salt),
וּשְׁמָמָ֖ה (and a desolation). עַד־ (Even to) עוֹלָ֑ם (forever)
שְׁאֵרִ֤ית (the remnant) עַמִּי֙ (of My people) יְבָזּ֔וּם (will plunder them)
וְיֶ֥תֶר (and the remainder) גּוֹי (of My people) יִנְחָלֽוּם׃ (will possess them).
10 זֹ֥את (This is) לָהֶ֖ם (unto them) תַּ֣חַת (in exchange for) גְּאוֹנָ֑ם (their pride),
כִּ֤י (because) חֵֽרְפוּ֙ (they have scorned) וַיַּגְדִּ֔לוּ (and magnified themselves)
עַל־ (against) עַ֖ם (the people) יְהוָ֥ה (of YHWH) צְבָאֽוֹת׃ (of Hosts).
11 נוֹרָ֤א (Fearsome is) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) עֲלֵיהֶ֔ם (against them)
כִּ֣י (for) רָזָ֔ה (he will starve) אֵ֖ת (-) כָּל־ (all) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (the gods) הָאָ֑רֶץ (of the earth);
וְיִשְׁתַּֽחֲווּ־ (and will bow down) לוֹ֙ (to Him) אִ֣ישׁ (each man)
מִמְּקוֹמ֔וֹ (from his place), כֹּ֖ל (all)
אִיֵּ֥י (the coasts) הַגּוֹיִֽם׃ (of the nations).
Judgment on Cush and Assyria
12 גַּם־ (Also), אַתֶּ֣ם (you⁺) כּוּשִׁ֔ים (O Cushites)
חַֽלְלֵ֥י (will be slain) חַרְבִּ֖י (by My sword) הֵֽמָּה׃ (they).
13 וְיֵ֤ט (And He will stretch out) יָדוֹ֙ (His hand) עַל־ (against) צָפ֔וֹן (the north),
וִֽיאַבֵּ֖ד (and He will destroy) אֶת־ (-) אַשּׁ֑וּר (Assyria);
וְיָשֵׂ֤ם (and He will set) אֶת־ (-) נִֽינְוֵה֙ (Nineveh) לִשְׁמָמָ֔ה (as a desolation),
צִיָּ֖ה (as dry) כַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃ (as the desert).
14 וְרָבְצ֨וּ (And will lie down) בְתוֹכָ֤הּ (in her midst) עֲדָרִים֙ (the herds)
כָּל־ (every) חַיְתוֹ־ (beast) ג֔וֹי (of the nation);
גַּם־ (even) קָאַת֙ (the desert owl) גַּם־ (and) קִפֹּ֔ד (screech owl)
בְּכַפְתֹּרֶ֖יהָ (in her capitals) יָלִ֑ינוּ (will lodge)
ק֠וֹל (their voice) יְשׁוֹרֵ֤ר (will sing) בַּֽחַלּוֹן֙ (in the window);
חֹ֣רֶב (desolation) בַּסַּ֔ף (on the threshold);
כִּ֥י (for) אַרְזָ֖ה (the cedar work) עֵרָֽה׃ (He will lay bare).
15 זֹ֠את (This is) הָעִ֤יר (the city) הָעַלִּיזָה֙ (jubilant)
הַיּוֹשֶׁ֣בֶת (the one dwelling) לָבֶ֔טַח (in security),
הָאֹֽמְרָה֙ (saying) בִּלְבָבָ֔הּ (in her heart),
אֲנִ֖י (I am) וְאַפְסִ֣י (and ceases to be) ע֑וֹד (another)
אֵ֣יךְ׀ (How) הָיְתָ֣ה (has she become) לְשַׁמָּ֗ה (as a desolation),
מַרְבֵּץ֙ (a resting place) לַֽחַיָּ֔ה (for the beast)
כֹּ֚ל (Everyone) עוֹבֵ֣ר (one passing) עָלֶ֔יהָ (by her)
יִשְׁרֹ֖ק (will hiss), יָנִ֥יעַ (and shake) יָדֽוֹ׃ס (his fist).
