Ezra 5
Tattenai’s Letter to Darius
Resurgence of Hope: The Rebuilding of God's Temple

Ezra 5 reminds us that even in the face of adversity and opposition, faith and obedience to God's will can lead to the manifestation of divine providence. The resumption of the temple construction under the guidance of the prophets reinforces that with God's guidance, no task is insurmountable.

Resumption of the Temple Work (Verses 1-2)

Prophets Haggai and Zechariah started to prophesy to the Jews in Judah and Jerusalem. Inspired by their words, Zerubbabel and Jeshua, began to rebuild the house of God in Jerusalem.

Encountering Opposition (Verses 3-5)

Tattenai, governor of the region beyond the River, and Shethar-Bozenai questioned the authority of the Jews to rebuild the temple. They asked for the names of the men who were constructing the building. However, God watched over the Jewish elders and did not stop the work until a report could reach Darius and an official reply received.

The Letter to Darius (Verses 6-17)

Tattenai wrote to King Darius about the situation, detailing the Jews' claim of King Cyrus's decree to rebuild the temple and the house's history of being destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar. The letter requested King Darius to search the royal archives to verify if there was indeed such a decree from Cyrus.

Ezra 5 presents a compelling account of a critical moment in the history of the Jewish people - the resumption of the construction of the second temple in Jerusalem. As external opposition threatened to halt the rebuilding, the divine intervention through prophets rekindled the spirit of the people, highlighting a story of resilience, obedience, and faith.
