After Jesus had spoken these words, He went out with His disciples across the Kidron Valley, where they entered a garden.1After Jesus had said these things, He went out with His disciples across the Kidron Valley, where there was a garden, and He and His disciples went into it.
Now Judas His betrayer also knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with His disciples.2Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place, because Jesus often met there with His disciples.
So Judas brought a band of soldiers and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees. They arrived at the garden carrying lanterns, torches, and weapons.3So Judas took a company of soldiers and some temple police from the chief priests and the Pharisees and came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.
Jesus, knowing all that was coming upon Him, stepped forward and asked them, “Whom are you seeking?”4Then Jesus, knowing everything that was about to happen to Him, went out and said to them, "Who is it you're looking for?""
“Jesus of Nazareth,” they answered. Jesus said, “I am He.” And Judas His betrayer was standing there with them.5Jesus the Nazarene," they answered. "I am He," Jesus told them. Judas, who betrayed Him, was also standing with them.
When Jesus said, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground.6When He told them, "I am He," they stepped back and fell to the ground.
So He asked them again, “Whom are you seeking?” “Jesus of Nazareth,” they answered.7Then He asked them again, "Who is it you're looking for?"" Jesus the Nazarene," they said.
“I told you that I am He,” Jesus replied. “So if you are looking for Me, let these men go.”8"I told you I am He," Jesus replied. "So if you're looking for Me, let these men go."
This was to fulfill the word He had spoken: “I have not lost one of those You have given Me.”9This was to fulfill the words He had said: "I have not lost one of those You have given Me."
Then Simon Peter drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.10Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it, struck the high priest's slave, and cut off his right ear. (The slave's name was Malchus.)
“Put your sword back in its sheath!” Jesus said to Peter. “Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given Me?”11At that, Jesus said to Peter, "Sheathe your sword! Am I not to drink the cup the Father has given Me?"
Then the band of soldiers, with its commander and the officers of the Jews, arrested Jesus and bound Him.12Then the company of soldiers, the commander, and the Jewish temple police arrested Jesus and tied Him up.
They brought Him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year.13First they led Him to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.
Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that it would be better if one man died for the people.14Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that it was advantageous that one man should die for the people.
Now Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Since that disciple was known to the high priest, he also went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest.15Meanwhile, Simon Peter was following Jesus, as was another disciple. That disciple was an acquaintance of the high priest; so he went with Jesus into the high priest's courtyard.
But Peter stood outside at the door. Then the disciple who was known to the high priest went out and spoke to the doorkeeper, and brought Peter in.16But Peter remained standing outside by the door. So the other disciple, the one known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the girl who was the doorkeeper and brought Peter in.
At this, the servant girl watching the door said to Peter, “Aren’t you also one of this man’s disciples?” “I am not,” he answered.17Then the slave girl who was the doorkeeper said to Peter, "You aren't one of this man's disciples too, are you?"" I am not!" he said.
Because it was cold, the servants and officers were standing around a charcoal fire they had made to keep warm. And Peter was also standing with them, warming himself.18Now the slaves and the temple police had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold. They were standing there warming themselves, and Peter was standing with them, warming himself.
Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about His disciples and His teaching.19The high priest questioned Jesus about His disciples and about His teaching.
“I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus answered. “I always taught in the synagogues and at the temple, where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret.20"I have spoken openly to the world," Jesus answered him. "I have always taught in the synagogue and in the temple complex, where all the Jews congregate, and I haven't spoken anything in secret.
Why are you asking Me? Ask those who heard My message. Surely they know what I said.”21Why do you question Me? Question those who heard what I told them. Look, they know what I said."
When Jesus had said this, one of the officers standing nearby slapped Him in the face and said, “Is this how You answer the high priest?”22When He had said these things, one of the temple police standing by slapped Jesus, saying, "Is this the way you answer the high priest?"
Jesus replied, “If I said something wrong, testify as to what was wrong. But if I spoke correctly, why did you strike Me?”23"If I have spoken wrongly," Jesus answered him, "give evidence about the wrong; but if rightly, why do you hit Me?"
Then Annas sent Him, still bound, to Caiaphas the high priest.24Then Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
Simon Peter was still standing and warming himself. So they asked him, “Aren’t you also one of His disciples?” He denied it and said, “I am not.”25Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said to him, "You aren't one of His disciples too, are you?" He denied it and said, "I am not!"
One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Didn’t I see you with Him in the garden?”26One of the high priest's slaves, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said, "Didn't I see you with Him in the garden?"
Peter denied it once more, and immediately a rooster crowed.27Peter then denied it again. Immediately a rooster crowed.
Then they led Jesus away from Caiaphas into the Praetorium. By now it was early morning, and the Jews did not enter the Praetorium, to avoid being defiled and unable to eat the Passover.28Then they took Jesus from Caiaphas to the governor's headquarters. It was early morning. They did not enter the headquarters themselves; otherwise they would be defiled and unable to eat the Passover.
So Pilate went out to them and asked, “What accusation are you bringing against this man?”29Then Pilate came out to them and said, "What charge do you bring against this man?"
“If He were not a criminal,” they replied, “we would not have handed Him over to you.”30They answered him, "If this man weren't a criminal, we wouldn't have handed Him over to you."
“You take Him and judge Him by your own law,” Pilate told them. “We are not permitted to execute anyone,” the Jews replied.31So Pilate told them, "Take Him yourselves and judge Him according to your law."" It's not legal for us to put anyone to death," the Jews declared.
This was to fulfill the word that Jesus had spoken to indicate the kind of death He was going to die.32They said this so that Jesus' words might be fulfilled signifying what kind of death He was going to die.
Pilate went back into the Praetorium, summoned Jesus, and asked Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?”33Then Pilate went back into the headquarters, summoned Jesus, and said to Him, "Are You the King of the Jews?"
“Are you saying this on your own,” Jesus asked, “or did others tell you about Me?”34Jesus answered, "Are you asking this on your own, or have others told you about Me?""
“Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests handed You over to me. What have You done?”35I'm not a Jew, am I?" Pilate replied. "Your own nation and the chief priests handed You over to me. What have You done?"
Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world; if it were, My servants would fight to prevent My arrest by the Jews. But now My kingdom is not of this realm.”36"My kingdom is not of this world," said Jesus. "If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I wouldn't be handed over to the Jews. As it is, My kingdom does not have its origin here." "
“Then You are a king!” Pilate said. “You say that I am a king,” Jesus answered. “For this reason I was born and have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to My voice.”37You are a king then?" Pilate asked. "You say that I'm a king," Jesus replied. "I was born for this, and I have come into the world for this: to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to My voice.""
“What is truth?” Pilate asked. And having said this, he went out again to the Jews and told them, “I find no basis for a charge against Him.38What is truth?" said Pilate. After he had said this, he went out to the Jews again and told them, "I find no grounds for charging Him.
But it is your custom that I release to you one prisoner at the Passover. So then, do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”39You have a custom that I release one prisoner to you at the Passover. So, do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?"
“Not this man,” they shouted, “but Barabbas!” (Now Barabbas was an insurrectionist.)40They shouted back, "Not this man, but Barabbas!" Now Barabbas was a revolutionary.
