So Abram went up out of Egypt into the Negev—he and his wife and all his possessions—and Lot was with him.1Abram traveled from Egypt, along with his wife and everyone who belonged to his household —including Lot—to the Negev.
And Abram had become extremely wealthy in livestock and silver and gold.2Now Abram had become quite wealthy in livestock, silver, and gold.
From the Negev he journeyed from place to place toward Bethel, until he came to the place between Bethel and Ai where his tent had formerly been pitched,3He journeyed by stages from the Negev to Bethel, the place where his tent had formerly been, between Bethel and Ai,
to the site where he had built the altar. And there Abram called on the name of the LORD.4where he had first built an altar. There Abram called on the name of the LORD.
Now Lot, who was traveling with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents.5Lot, who was traveling with Abram, also had flocks of sheep, herds, and tents.
But the land was unable to support both of them while they stayed together, for they had so many possessions that they were unable to coexist.6But the land could not support them living together, because they had so many livestock that they could not stay together.
And there was discord between the herdsmen of Abram and the herdsmen of Lot. At that time the Canaanites and the Perizzites were also living in the land.7There was strife between the herdsmen in charge of Abram's livestock and the herdsmen in charge of Lot's livestock. Also, at that time the Canaanites and the Perizzites were living in the land.
So Abram said to Lot, “Please let there be no contention between you and me, or between your herdsmen and my herdsmen. After all, we are brothers.8So Abram told Lot, "Please, let's not have strife between you and me, or between your herdsmen and my herdsmen, since we are relatives.
Is not the whole land before you? Now separate yourself from me. If you go to the left, I will go to the right; if you go to the right, I will go to the left.”9Isn't the whole land available to you? Let's separate: If you go to the left, then I will go to the right; if you go to the right, then I will go to the left."
And Lot looked out and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan, all the way to Zoar, was well watered like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt. (This was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.)10Lot looked around and noticed that the whole Jordan plain as far as Zoar was well-watered like the garden of the LORD or like the land of Egypt. (This was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.)
So Lot chose the whole plain of the Jordan for himself and set out toward the east. And Abram and Lot parted company.11So Lot chose for himself all the Jordan plain. Then Lot traveled eastward, and they separated from each other.
Abram lived in the land of Canaan, but Lot settled in the cities of the plain and pitched his tent toward Sodom.12So Abram lived in the land of Canaan, while Lot settled in the cities of the plain, setting up his tent in the vicinity of Sodom.
But the men of Sodom were wicked, sinning greatly against the LORD.13Now the men of Sodom were particularly evil and sinful in their defiance of the LORD.
After Lot had departed, the LORD said to Abram, “Now lift up your eyes from the place where you are, and look to the north and south and east and west,14After Lot had separated from Abram, the LORD told Abram, "Look off to the north, south , east, and west from where you're living,
for all the land that you see, I will give to you and your offspring forever.15because I'm going to give you and your descendants all of the land that you see—forever!
I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if one could count the dust of the earth, then your offspring could be counted.16I'll make your descendants as plentiful as the specks of dust of the earth, so that if one could count the specks of dust of the earth, then your descendants could also be counted.
Get up and walk around the land, through its length and breadth, for I will give it to you.”17Get up! Walk throughout the length and breadth of the land, because I'm going to give it to you."
So Abram moved his tent and went to live near the Oaks of Mamre at Hebron, where he built an altar to the LORD.18So Abram moved his tent and settled beside the oaks of Mamre that are by Hebron, where he built an altar to the LORD.
