So Abram went up out of Egypt into the Negev—he and his wife and all his possessions—and Lot was with him.1So Abram went up from Egypt into the Negev. He took his wife and all his possessions with him, as well as Lot.
And Abram had become extremely wealthy in livestock and silver and gold.2(Now Abram was very wealthy in livestock, silver, and gold.)
From the Negev he journeyed from place to place toward Bethel, until he came to the place between Bethel and Ai where his tent had formerly been pitched,3And he journeyed from place to place from the Negev as far as Bethel. He returned to the place where he had pitched his tent at the beginning, between Bethel and Ai.
to the site where he had built the altar. And there Abram called on the name of the LORD.4This was the place where he had first built the altar, and there Abram worshiped the LORD.
Now Lot, who was traveling with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents.5Now Lot, who was traveling with Abram, also had flocks, herds, and tents.
But the land was unable to support both of them while they stayed together, for they had so many possessions that they were unable to coexist.6But the land could not support them while they were living side by side. Because their possessions were so great, they were not able to live alongside one another.
And there was discord between the herdsmen of Abram and the herdsmen of Lot. At that time the Canaanites and the Perizzites were also living in the land.7So there were quarrels between Abram's herdsmen and Lot's herdsmen. (Now the Canaanites and the Perizzites were living in the land at that time.)
So Abram said to Lot, “Please let there be no contention between you and me, or between your herdsmen and my herdsmen. After all, we are brothers.8Abram said to Lot, "Let there be no quarreling between me and you, and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen, for we are close relatives.
Is not the whole land before you? Now separate yourself from me. If you go to the left, I will go to the right; if you go to the right, I will go to the left.”9Is not the whole land before you? Separate yourself now from me. If you go to the left, then I'll go to the right, but if you go to the right, then I'll go to the left."
And Lot looked out and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan, all the way to Zoar, was well watered like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt. (This was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.)10Lot looked up and saw the whole region of the Jordan. He noticed that all of it was well-watered (before the LORD obliterated Sodom and Gomorrah) like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, all the way to Zoar.
So Lot chose the whole plain of the Jordan for himself and set out toward the east. And Abram and Lot parted company.11Lot chose for himself the whole region of the Jordan and traveled toward the east. So the relatives separated from each other.
Abram lived in the land of Canaan, but Lot settled in the cities of the plain and pitched his tent toward Sodom.12Abram settled in the land of Canaan, but Lot settled among the cities of the Jordan plain and pitched his tents next to Sodom.
But the men of Sodom were wicked, sinning greatly against the LORD.13(Now the people of Sodom were extremely wicked rebels against the LORD.)
After Lot had departed, the LORD said to Abram, “Now lift up your eyes from the place where you are, and look to the north and south and east and west,14After Lot had departed, the LORD said to Abram, "Look from the place where you stand to the north, south, east, and west.
for all the land that you see, I will give to you and your offspring forever.15I will give all the land that you see to you and your descendants forever.
I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if one could count the dust of the earth, then your offspring could be counted.16And I will make your descendants like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone is able to count the dust of the earth, then your descendants also can be counted.
Get up and walk around the land, through its length and breadth, for I will give it to you.”17Get up and walk throughout the land, for I will give it to you."
So Abram moved his tent and went to live near the Oaks of Mamre at Hebron, where he built an altar to the LORD.18So Abram moved his tents and went to live by the oaks of Mamre in Hebron, and he built an altar to the LORD there.
