| 1God, listen to my prayer and do not hide from my plea for help. | 1Pay attention to my prayer, God, and do not hide yourself from my appeal. |
| 2Pay attention to me and answer me. I am restless and in turmoil with my complaint, | 2Pay attention to me and answer me. I moan and groan in my thoughts, |
| 3because of the enemy's words, because of the pressure of the wicked. For they bring down disaster on me and harass me in anger. | 3because of the voice of the enemy, and because of the oppression of the wicked. They bring down evil upon me, and in anger they hate me. |
| 4My heart shudders within me; terrors of death sweep over me. | 4My heart is trembling within me, and the terrors of death have assaulted me. |
| 5Fear and trembling grip me; horror has overwhelmed me. | 5Fear and trembling have overwhelmed me, and horror has covered me. |
| 6I said, "If only I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and find rest. | 6I said, "O, who will give me the wings of a dove, so that I could fly away and live somewhere else? |
| 7How far away I would flee; I would stay in the wilderness. Selah | 7Look, I want to flee far away; I want to settle down in the wilderness. Interlude |
| 8I would hurry to my shelter from the raging wind and the storm." | 8I want to deliver myself quickly from this windstorm and tempest." |
| 9Lord, confuse and confound their speech, for I see violence and strife in the city; | 9Confound them, Lord, and confuse their speech, because I have seen violence and strife in the city. |
| 10day and night they make the rounds on its walls. Crime and trouble are within it; | 10Day and night they prowl around its walls; evil and iniquity are within it. |
| 11destruction is inside it; oppression and deceit never leave its marketplace. | 11Wickedness is at the center of it; fraud and lies never leave its streets. |
| 12Now it is not an enemy who insults me--otherwise I could bear it; it is not a foe who rises up against me--otherwise I could hide from him. | 12For it is not an enemy who insults me— I could have handled that— nor is it someone who hates me and who now arises against me— I could have hidden myself from him— |
| 13But it is you, a man who is my peer, my companion and good friend! | 13but it is you— a man whom I treated as my equal— my personal confidant, my close friend! |
| 14We used to have close fellowship; we walked with the crowd into the house of God. | 14We had good fellowship together; and we even walked together in the house of God! |
| 15Let death take them by surprise; let them go down to Sheol alive, because evil is in their homes and within them. | 15Let death seize them! May they be plunged alive into the afterlife, for wicked things are in their homes and among them. |
| 16But I call to God, and the LORD will save me. | 16I call upon God, and the LORD will deliver me. |
| 17I complain and groan morning, noon, and night, and he hears my voice. | 17Morning, noon, and night, I mulled over these things and cried out in my distress, and he heard my voice. |
| 18Though many are against me, he will redeem me from my battle unharmed. | 18He calmly ransomed my soul from the war waged against me, for there was a vast crowd who stood against me. |
| 19God, the one enthroned from long ago, will hear and will humiliate them Selah because they do not change and do not fear God. | 19God, who is enthroned from long ago, will hear me and humble them. Interlude Because they do not repent, they do not fear God. |
| 20My friend acts violently against those at peace with him; he violates his covenant. | 20Each of my friends raises his hand against his allies; each of my friends breaks his word. |
| 21His buttery words are smooth, but war is in his heart. His words are softer than oil, but they are drawn swords. | 21His mouth is as smooth as butter, while war is in his heart. His words were as smooth as olive oil, while his sword is drawn. |
| 22Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you; he will never allow the righteous to be shaken. | 22Cast on the LORD whatever he sends your way, and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be shaken. |
| 23God, you will bring them down to the Pit of destruction; men of bloodshed and treachery will not live out half their days. But I will trust in you. | 23But you, God, bring them down to the Pit of corruption; bloodthirsty and deceitful people will not live out half their days. But I put my full confidence in you. |
