Abraham had taken another wife, whose name was Keturah,1Now Abraham took another wife, whose name was Keturah.
and she bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.2She bore to him Zimran and Jokshan and Medan and Midian and Ishbak and Shuah.
Jokshan fathered Sheba and Dedan. Dedan's sons were the Asshurim, Letushim, and Leummim.3Jokshan became the father of Sheba and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were Asshurim and Letushim and Leummim.
And Midian's sons were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. All these were sons of Keturah.4The sons of Midian were Ephah and Epher and Hanoch and Abida and Eldaah. All these were the sons of Keturah.
Abraham gave everything he owned to Isaac.5Now Abraham gave all that he had to Isaac;
But Abraham gave gifts to the sons of his concubines, and while he was still alive he sent them eastward, away from his son Isaac, to the land of the East.6but to the sons of his concubines, Abraham gave gifts while he was still living, and sent them away from his son Isaac eastward, to the land of the east.
This is the length of Abraham's life: 175 years.7These are all the years of Abraham's life that he lived, one hundred and seventy-five years.
He took his last breath and died at a good old age, old and contented, and he was gathered to his people.8Abraham breathed his last and died in a ripe old age, an old man and satisfied with life; and he was gathered to his people.
His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah near Mamre, in the field of Ephron son of Zohar the Hethite.9Then his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, facing Mamre,
This was the field that Abraham bought from the Hethites. Abraham was buried there with his wife Sarah.10the field which Abraham purchased from the sons of Heth; there Abraham was buried with Sarah his wife.
After Abraham's death, God blessed his son Isaac, who lived near Beer-lahai-roi.11It came about after the death of Abraham, that God blessed his son Isaac; and Isaac lived by Beer-lahai-roi.
These are the family records of Abraham's son Ishmael, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah's slave, bore to Abraham.12Now these are the records of the generations of Ishmael, Abraham's son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah's maid, bore to Abraham;
These are the names of Ishmael's sons; their names according to the family records are Nebaioth, Ishmael's firstborn, then Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam,13and these are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, in the order of their birth: Nebaioth, the firstborn of Ishmael, and Kedar and Adbeel and Mibsam
Mishma, Dumah, Massa,14and Mishma and Dumah and Massa,
Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah.15Hadad and Tema, Jetur, Naphish and Kedemah.
These are Ishmael's sons, and these are their names by their settlements and encampments: twelve leaders of their clans.16These are the sons of Ishmael and these are their names, by their villages, and by their camps; twelve princes according to their tribes.
This is the length of Ishmael's life: 137 years. He took his last breath and died, and was gathered to his people.17These are the years of the life of Ishmael, one hundred and thirty-seven years; and he breathed his last and died, and was gathered to his people.
And they settled from Havilah to Shur, which is opposite Egypt as you go toward Asshur. He stayed near all his relatives.18They settled from Havilah to Shur which is east of Egypt as one goes toward Assyria; he settled in defiance of all his relatives.
These are the family records of Isaac son of Abraham. Abraham fathered Isaac.19Now these are the records of the generations of Isaac, Abraham's son: Abraham became the father of Isaac;
Isaac was forty years old when he took as his wife Rebekah daughter of Bethuel the Aramean from Paddan-aram and sister of Laban the Aramean.20and Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean of Paddan-aram, the sister of Laban the Aramean, to be his wife.
Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife because she was childless. The LORD was receptive to his prayer, and his wife Rebekah conceived.21Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren; and the LORD answered him and Rebekah his wife conceived.
But the children inside her struggled with each other, and she said, "Why is this happening to me?" So she went to inquire of the LORD.22But the children struggled together within her; and she said, "If it is so, why then am I this way?" So she went to inquire of the LORD.
And the LORD said to her: Two nations are in your womb; two peoples will come from you and be separated. One people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.23The LORD said to her, "Two nations are in your womb; And two peoples will be separated from your body; And one people shall be stronger than the other; And the older shall serve the younger."
When her time came to give birth, there were indeed twins in her womb.24When her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.
The first one came out red-looking, covered with hair like a fur coat, and they named him Esau.25Now the first came forth red, all over like a hairy garment; and they named him Esau.
After this, his brother came out grasping Esau's heel with his hand. So he was named Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when they were born.26Afterward his brother came forth with his hand holding on to Esau's heel, so his name was called Jacob; and Isaac was sixty years old when she gave birth to them.
When the boys grew up, Esau became an expert hunter, an outdoorsman, but Jacob was a quiet man who stayed at home.27When the boys grew up, Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the field, but Jacob was a peaceful man, living in tents.
Isaac loved Esau because he had a taste for wild game, but Rebekah loved Jacob.28Now Isaac loved Esau, because he had a taste for game, but Rebekah loved Jacob.
Once when Jacob was cooking a stew, Esau came in from the field exhausted.29When Jacob had cooked stew, Esau came in from the field and he was famished;
He said to Jacob, "Let me eat some of that red stuff, because I'm exhausted." That is why he was also named Edom.30and Esau said to Jacob, "Please let me have a swallow of that red stuff there, for I am famished." Therefore his name was called Edom.
Jacob replied, "First sell me your birthright."31But Jacob said, "First sell me your birthright."
"Look," said Esau, "I'm about to die, so what good is a birthright to me?"32Esau said, "Behold, I am about to die; so of what use then is the birthright to me?"
Jacob said, "Swear to me first." So he swore to Jacob and sold his birthright to him.33And Jacob said, "First swear to me"; so he swore to him, and sold his birthright to Jacob.
Then Jacob gave bread and lentil stew to Esau; he ate, drank, got up, and went away. So Esau despised his birthright.34Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew; and he ate and drank, and rose and went on his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright.
