1The LORD spoke to Moses,1Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,
2"Execute vengeance for the Israelites against the Midianites. After that, you will be gathered to your people."2"Take full vengeance for the sons of Israel on the Midianites; afterward you will be gathered to your people."
3So Moses spoke to the people, "Equip some of your men for war. They will go against Midian to inflict the LORD's vengeance on them.3Moses spoke to the people, saying, "Arm men from among you for the war, that they may go against Midian to execute the LORD'S vengeance on Midian.
4Send one thousand men to war from each Israelite tribe."4"A thousand from each tribe of all the tribes of Israel you shall send to the war."
5So one thousand were recruited from each Israelite tribe out of the thousands in Israel--twelve thousand equipped for war.5So there were furnished from the thousands of Israel, a thousand from each tribe, twelve thousand armed for war.
6Moses sent one thousand from each tribe to war. They went with Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest, in whose care were the holy objects and signal trumpets.6Moses sent them, a thousand from each tribe, to the war, and Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, to the war with them, and the holy vessels and the trumpets for the alarm in his hand.
7They waged war against Midian, as the LORD had commanded Moses, and killed every male.7So they made war against Midian, just as the LORD had commanded Moses, and they killed every male.
8Along with the others slain by them, they killed the Midianite kings--Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, the five kings of Midian. They also killed Balaam son of Beor with the sword.8They killed the kings of Midian along with the rest of their slain: Evi and Rekem and Zur and Hur and Reba, the five kings of Midian; they also killed Balaam the son of Beor with the sword.
9The Israelites took the Midianite women and their dependents captive, and they plundered all their cattle, flocks, and property.9The sons of Israel captured the women of Midian and their little ones; and all their cattle and all their flocks and all their goods they plundered.
10Then they burned all the cities where the Midianites lived, as well as all their encampments,10Then they burned all their cities where they lived and all their camps with fire.
11and took away all the spoils of war and the captives, both people and animals.11They took all the spoil and all the prey, both of man and of beast.
12They brought the prisoners, animals, and spoils of war to Moses, the priest Eleazar, and the Israelite community at the camp on the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho.12They brought the captives and the prey and the spoil to Moses, and to Eleazar the priest and to the congregation of the sons of Israel, to the camp at the plains of Moab, which are by the Jordan opposite Jericho.
13Moses, the priest Eleazar, and all the leaders of the community went to meet them outside the camp.13Moses and Eleazar the priest and all the leaders of the congregation went out to meet them outside the camp.
14But Moses became furious with the officers, the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, who were returning from the military campaign.14Moses was angry with the officers of the army, the captains of thousands and the captains of hundreds, who had come from service in the war.
15"Have you let every female live?" he asked them.15And Moses said to them, "Have you spared all the women?
16"Yet they are the ones who, at Balaam's advice, incited the Israelites to unfaithfulness against the LORD in the Peor incident, so that the plague came against the LORD's community.16"Behold, these caused the sons of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to trespass against the LORD in the matter of Peor, so the plague was among the congregation of the LORD.
17So now, kill every male among the dependents and kill every woman who has gone to bed with a man,17"Now therefore, kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known man intimately.
18but keep alive for yourselves all the young females who have not gone to bed with a man.18"But all the girls who have not known man intimately, spare for yourselves.
19"You are to remain outside the camp for seven days. All of you and your prisoners who have killed a person or touched the dead are to purify yourselves on the third day and the seventh day.19"And you, camp outside the camp seven days; whoever has killed any person and whoever has touched any slain, purify yourselves, you and your captives, on the third day and on the seventh day.
20Also purify everything: garments, leather goods, things made of goat hair, and every article of wood."20"You shall purify for yourselves every garment and every article of leather and all the work of goats' hair, and all articles of wood."
21Then the priest Eleazar said to the soldiers who had gone to battle, "This is the legal statute the LORD commanded Moses:21Then Eleazar the priest said to the men of war who had gone to battle, "This is the statute of the law which the LORD has commanded Moses:
22The gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin, and lead--22only the gold and the silver, the bronze, the iron, the tin and the lead,
23everything that can withstand fire--you are to pass through fire, and it will be clean. It must still be purified with the purification water. Anything that cannot withstand fire, pass through the water.23everything that can stand the fire, you shall pass through the fire, and it shall be clean, but it shall be purified with water for impurity. But whatever cannot stand the fire you shall pass through the water.
24On the seventh day wash your clothes, and you will be clean. After that you may enter the camp."24"And you shall wash your clothes on the seventh day and be clean, and afterward you may enter the camp."
25The LORD told Moses,25Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,
26"You, the priest Eleazar, and the family heads of the community are to take a count of what was captured, people and animals.26"You and Eleazar the priest and the heads of the fathers' households of the congregation take a count of the booty that was captured, both of man and of animal;
27Then divide the captives between the troops who went out to war and the entire community.27and divide the booty between the warriors who went out to battle and all the congregation.
28Set aside a tribute for the LORD from what belongs to the fighting men who went out to war: one out of every five hundred people, cattle, donkeys, sheep, and goats.28"Levy a tax for the LORD from the men of war who went out to battle, one in five hundred of the persons and of the cattle and of the donkeys and of the sheep;
29Take the tribute from their half and give it to the priest Eleazar as a contribution to the LORD.29take it from their half and give it to Eleazar the priest, as an offering to the LORD.
30From the Israelites' half, take one out of every fifty from the people, cattle, donkeys, sheep, and goats, all the livestock, and give them to the Levites who perform the duties of the LORD's tabernacle."30"From the sons of Israel's half, you shall take one drawn out of every fifty of the persons, of the cattle, of the donkeys and of the sheep, from all the animals, and give them to the Levites who keep charge of the tabernacle of the LORD."
31So Moses and the priest Eleazar did as the LORD commanded Moses.31Moses and Eleazar the priest did just as the LORD had commanded Moses.
32The captives remaining from the plunder the army had taken totaled: 675,000 sheep and goats,32Now the booty that remained from the spoil which the men of war had plundered was 675,000 sheep,
3372,000 cattle,33and 72,000 cattle,
3461,000 donkeys,34and 61,000 donkeys,
35and 32,000 people, all the females who had not gone to bed with a man.35and of human beings, of the women who had not known man intimately, all the persons were 32,000.
36The half portion for those who went out to war numbered: 337,500 sheep and goats,36The half, the portion of those who went out to war, was as follows: the number of sheep was 337,500,
37and the tribute to the LORD was 675 from the sheep and goats;37and the LORD'S levy of the sheep was 675;
38from the 36,000 cattle, the tribute to the LORD was 72;38and the cattle were 36,000, from which the LORD'S levy was 72;
39from the 30,500 donkeys, the tribute to the LORD was 61;39and the donkeys were 30,500, from which the LORD'S levy was 61;
40and from the 16,000 people, the tribute to the LORD was 32 people.40and the human beings were 16,000, from whom the LORD'S levy was 32 persons.
41Moses gave the tribute to the priest Eleazar as a contribution for the LORD, as the LORD had commanded Moses.41Moses gave the levy which was the LORD'S offering to Eleazar the priest, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.
42From the Israelites' half, which Moses separated from the men who fought,42As for the sons of Israel's half, which Moses separated from the men who had gone to war--
43the community's half was: 337,500 sheep and goats,43now the congregation's half was 337,500 sheep,
4436,000 cattle,44and 36,000 cattle,
4530,500 donkeys,45and 30,500 donkeys,
46and 16,000 people.46and the human beings were 16,000--
47Moses took one out of every fifty, selected from the people and the livestock of the Israelites' half. He gave them to the Levites who perform the duties of the LORD's tabernacle, as the LORD had commanded him.47and from the sons of Israel's half, Moses took one drawn out of every fifty, both of man and of animals, and gave them to the Levites, who kept charge of the tabernacle of the LORD, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.
48The officers who were over the thousands of the army, the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, approached Moses48Then the officers who were over the thousands of the army, the captains of thousands and the captains of hundreds, approached Moses,
49and told him, "Your servants have taken a census of the fighting men under our command, and not one of us is missing.49and they said to Moses, "Your servants have taken a census of men of war who are in our charge, and no man of us is missing.
50So we have presented to the LORD an offering of the gold articles each man found--armlets, bracelets, rings, earrings, and necklaces--to make atonement for ourselves before the LORD."50"So we have brought as an offering to the LORD what each man found, articles of gold, armlets and bracelets, signet rings, earrings and necklaces, to make atonement for ourselves before the LORD."
51Moses and the priest Eleazar received from them all the articles made out of gold.51Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold from them, all kinds of wrought articles.
52All the gold of the contribution they offered to the LORD, from the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, was 420 pounds.52All the gold of the offering which they offered up to the LORD, from the captains of thousands and the captains of hundreds, was 16,750 shekels.
53Each of the soldiers had taken plunder for himself.53The men of war had taken booty, every man for himself.
54Moses and the priest Eleazar received the gold from the commanders of thousands and of hundreds and brought it into the tent of meeting as a memorial for the Israelites before the LORD.54So Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold from the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and brought it to the tent of meeting as a memorial for the sons of Israel before the LORD.
