There was a man from Ramathaim-zophim in the hill country of Ephraim. His name was Elkanah son of Jeroham, son of Elihu, son of Tohu, son of Zuph, an Ephraimite.1There was a certain man from Ramathaim, a Zuphite from the hill country of Ephraim, whose name was Elkanah son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite.
He had two wives, the first named Hannah and the second Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah was childless.2He had two wives; one was called Hannah and the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none.
This man would go up from his town every year to worship and to sacrifice to the LORD of Armies at Shiloh, where Eli's two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were the LORD's priests.3Year after year this man went up from his town to worship and sacrifice to the LORD Almighty at Shiloh, where Hophni and Phinehas, the two sons of Eli, were priests of the LORD.
Whenever Elkanah offered a sacrifice, he always gave portions of the meat to his wife Peninnah and to each of her sons and daughters.4Whenever the day came for Elkanah to sacrifice, he would give portions of the meat to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters.
But he gave a double portion to Hannah, for he loved her even though the LORD had kept her from conceiving.5But to Hannah he gave a double portion because he loved her, and the LORD had closed her womb.
Her rival would taunt her severely just to provoke her, because the LORD had kept Hannah from conceiving.6Because the LORD had closed Hannah's womb, her rival kept provoking her in order to irritate her.
Year after year, when she went up to the LORD's house, her rival taunted her in this way. Hannah would weep and would not eat.7This went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the LORD, her rival provoked her till she wept and would not eat.
"Hannah, why are you crying?" her husband Elkanah would ask. "Why won't you eat? Why are you troubled? Am I not better to you than ten sons?"8Her husband Elkanah would say to her, "Hannah, why are you weeping? Why don't you eat? Why are you downhearted? Don't I mean more to you than ten sons?"
On one occasion, Hannah got up after they ate and drank at Shiloh. The priest Eli was sitting on a chair by the doorpost of the LORD's temple.9Once when they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh, Hannah stood up. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his chair by the doorpost of the LORD's house.
Deeply hurt, Hannah prayed to the LORD and wept with many tears.10In her deep anguish Hannah prayed to the LORD, weeping bitterly.
Making a vow, she pleaded, "LORD of Armies, if you will take notice of your servant's affliction, remember and not forget me, and give your servant a son, I will give him to the LORD all the days of his life, and his hair will never be cut."11And she made a vow, saying, "LORD Almighty, if you will only look on your servant's misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the LORD for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head."
While she continued praying in the LORD's presence, Eli watched her mouth.12As she kept on praying to the LORD, Eli observed her mouth.
Hannah was praying silently, and though her lips were moving, her voice could not be heard. Eli thought she was drunk13Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard. Eli thought she was drunk
and said to her, "How long are you going to be drunk? Get rid of your wine!"14and said to her, "How long are you going to stay drunk? Put away your wine."
"No, my lord," Hannah replied. "I am a woman with a broken heart. I haven't had any wine or beer; I've been pouring out my heart before the LORD.15"Not so, my lord," Hannah replied, "I am a woman who is deeply troubled. I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring out my soul to the LORD.
Don't think of me as a wicked woman; I've been praying from the depth of my anguish and resentment."16Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; I have been praying here out of my great anguish and grief."
Eli responded, "Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant the request you've made of him."17Eli answered, "Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of him."
"May your servant find favor with you," she replied. Then Hannah went on her way; she ate and no longer looked despondent.18She said, "May your servant find favor in your eyes." Then she went her way and ate something, and her face was no longer downcast.
The next morning Elkanah and Hannah got up early to worship before the LORD. Afterward, they returned home to Ramah. Then Elkanah was intimate with his wife Hannah, and the LORD remembered her.19Early the next morning they arose and worshiped before the LORD and then went back to their home at Ramah. Elkanah made love to his wife Hannah, and the LORD remembered her.
After some time, Hannah conceived and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, because she said, "I requested him from the LORD."20So in the course of time Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, saying, "Because I asked the LORD for him."
When Elkanah and all his household went up to make the annual sacrifice and his vow offering to the LORD,21When her husband Elkanah went up with all his family to offer the annual sacrifice to the LORD and to fulfill his vow,
Hannah did not go and explained to her husband, "After the child is weaned, I'll take him to appear in the LORD's presence and to stay there permanently."22Hannah did not go. She said to her husband, "After the boy is weaned, I will take him and present him before the LORD, and he will live there always."
Her husband Elkanah replied, "Do what you think is best, and stay here until you've weaned him. May the LORD confirm your word." So Hannah stayed there and nursed her son until she weaned him.23"Do what seems best to you," her husband Elkanah told her. "Stay here until you have weaned him; only may the LORD make good his word." So the woman stayed at home and nursed her son until she had weaned him.
When she had weaned him, she took him with her to Shiloh, as well as a three-year-old bull, half a bushel of flour, and a clay jar of wine. Though the boy was still young, she took him to the LORD's house at Shiloh.24After he was weaned, she took the boy with her, young as he was, along with a three-year-old bull, an ephah of flour and a skin of wine, and brought him to the house of the LORD at Shiloh.
Then they slaughtered the bull and brought the boy to Eli.25When the bull had been sacrificed, they brought the boy to Eli,
"Please, my lord," she said, "as surely as you live, my lord, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the LORD.26and she said to him, "Pardon me, my lord. As surely as you live, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the LORD.
I prayed for this boy, and since the LORD gave me what I asked him for,27I prayed for this child, and the LORD has granted me what I asked of him.
I now give the boy to the LORD. For as long as he lives, he is given to the LORD." Then he worshiped the LORD there.28So now I give him to the LORD. For his whole life he will be given over to the LORD." And he worshiped the LORD there.
