English Standard VersionChristian Standard Bible
In those days Hezekiah became sick and was at the point of death. And Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz came to him, and said to him, “Thus says the LORD: Set your house in order, for you shall die, you shall not recover.”1In those days Hezekiah became terminally ill. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz came and said to him, "This is what the LORD says: 'Set your house in order, for you are about to die; you will not recover.'"
Then Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the LORD,2Then Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the LORD.
and said, “Please, O LORD, remember how I have walked before you in faithfulness and with a whole heart, and have done what is good in your sight.” And Hezekiah wept bitterly.3He said, "Please, LORD, remember how I have walked before you faithfully and wholeheartedly, and have done what pleases you." And Hezekiah wept bitterly.
Then the word of the LORD came to Isaiah:4Then the word of the LORD came to Isaiah:
“Go and say to Hezekiah, Thus says the LORD, the God of David your father: I have heard your prayer; I have seen your tears. Behold, I will add fifteen years to your life.5"Go and tell Hezekiah, 'This is what the LORD God of your ancestor David says: I have heard your prayer; I have seen your tears. Look, I am going to add fifteen years to your life.
I will deliver you and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria, and will defend this city.6And I will rescue you and this city from the grasp of the king of Assyria; I will defend this city.
“This shall be the sign to you from the LORD, that the LORD will do this thing that he has promised:7This is the sign to you from the LORD that he will do what he has promised:
Behold, I will make the shadow cast by the declining sun on the dial of Ahaz turn back ten steps.” So the sun turned back on the dial the ten steps by which it had declined.8I am going to make the sun's shadow that goes down on the stairway of Ahaz go back by ten steps.'" So the sun's shadow went back the ten steps it had descended.
A writing of Hezekiah king of Judah, after he had been sick and had recovered from his sickness:9A poem by King Hezekiah of Judah after he had been sick and had recovered from his illness:
I said, In the middle of my days I must depart; I am consigned to the gates of Sheol for the rest of my years.10I said: In the prime of my life I must go to the gates of Sheol; I am deprived of the rest of my years.
I said, I shall not see the LORD, the LORD in the land of the living; I shall look on man no more among the inhabitants of the world.11I said: I will never see the LORD, the LORD in the land of the living; I will not look on humanity any longer with the inhabitants of what is passing away.
My dwelling is plucked up and removed from me like a shepherd’s tent; like a weaver I have rolled up my life; he cuts me off from the loom; from day to night you bring me to an end;12My dwelling is plucked up and removed from me like a shepherd's tent. I have rolled up my life like a weaver; he cuts me off from the loom. By nightfall you make an end of me.
I calmed myself until morning; like a lion he breaks all my bones; from day to night you bring me to an end.13I thought until the morning: He will break all my bones like a lion. By nightfall you make an end of me.
Like a swallow or a crane I chirp; I moan like a dove. My eyes are weary with looking upward. O Lord, I am oppressed; be my pledge of safety!14I chirp like a swallow or a crane; I moan like a dove. My eyes grow weak looking upward. Lord, I am oppressed; support me.
What shall I say? For he has spoken to me, and he himself has done it. I walk slowly all my years because of the bitterness of my soul.15What can I say? He has spoken to me, and he himself has done it. I walk along slowly all my years because of the bitterness of my soul.
O Lord, by these things men live, and in all these is the life of my spirit. Oh restore me to health and make me live!16Lord, by such things people live, and in every one of them my spirit finds life; you have restored me to health and let me live.
Behold, it was for my welfare that I had great bitterness; but in love you have delivered my life from the pit of destruction, for you have cast all my sins behind your back.17Indeed, it was for my own well-being that I had such intense bitterness; but your love has delivered me from the Pit of destruction, for you have thrown all my sins behind your back.
For Sheol does not thank you; death does not praise you; those who go down to the pit do not hope for your faithfulness.18For Sheol cannot thank you; Death cannot praise you. Those who go down to the Pit cannot hope for your faithfulness.
The living, the living, he thanks you, as I do this day; the father makes known to the children your faithfulness.19The living, only the living can thank you, as I do today; a father will make your faithfulness known to children.
The LORD will save me, and we will play my music on stringed instruments all the days of our lives, at the house of the LORD.20The LORD is ready to save me; we will play stringed instruments all the days of our lives at the house of the LORD.
Now Isaiah had said, “Let them take a cake of figs and apply it to the boil, that he may recover.”21Now Isaiah had said, "Let them take a lump of pressed figs and apply it to his infected skin, so that he may recover."
Hezekiah also had said, “What is the sign that I shall go up to the house of the LORD?”22And Hezekiah had asked, "What is the sign that I will go up to the LORD's temple?"
