Job 40
English Standard VersionNew Living Translation
And the LORD said to Job:1Then the LORD said to Job,
“Shall a faultfinder contend with the Almighty? He who argues with God, let him answer it.”2“Do you still want to argue with the Almighty? You are God’s critic, but do you have the answers?” Job Responds to the LORD
Then Job answered the LORD and said:3Then Job replied to the LORD,
“Behold, I am of small account; what shall I answer you? I lay my hand on my mouth.4“I am nothing—how could I ever find the answers? I will cover my mouth with my hand.
I have spoken once, and I will not answer; twice, but I will proceed no further.”5I have said too much already. I have nothing more to say.” The LORD Challenges Job Again
Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind and said:6Then the LORD answered Job from the whirlwind:
“Dress for action like a man; I will question you, and you make it known to me.7“Brace yourself like a man, because I have some questions for you, and you must answer them.
Will you even put me in the wrong? Will you condemn me that you may be in the right?8“Will you discredit my justice and condemn me just to prove you are right?
Have you an arm like God, and can you thunder with a voice like his?9Are you as strong as God? Can you thunder with a voice like his?
“Adorn yourself with majesty and dignity; clothe yourself with glory and splendor.10All right, put on your glory and splendor, your honor and majesty.
Pour out the overflowings of your anger, and look on everyone who is proud and abase him.11Give vent to your anger. Let it overflow against the proud.
Look on everyone who is proud and bring him low and tread down the wicked where they stand.12Humiliate the proud with a glance; walk on the wicked where they stand.
Hide them all in the dust together; bind their faces in the world below.13Bury them in the dust. Imprison them in the world of the dead.
Then will I also acknowledge to you that your own right hand can save you.14Then even I would praise you, for your own strength would save you.
“Behold, Behemoth, which I made as I made you; he eats grass like an ox.15“Take a look at Behemoth, which I made, just as I made you. It eats grass like an ox.
Behold, his strength in his loins, and his power in the muscles of his belly.16See its powerful loins and the muscles of its belly.
He makes his tail stiff like a cedar; the sinews of his thighs are knit together.17Its tail is as strong as a cedar. The sinews of its thighs are knit tightly together.
His bones are tubes of bronze, his limbs like bars of iron.18Its bones are tubes of bronze. Its limbs are bars of iron.
“He is the first of the works of God; let him who made him bring near his sword!19It is a prime example of God’s handiwork, and only its Creator can threaten it.
For the mountains yield food for him where all the wild beasts play.20The mountains offer it their best food, where all the wild animals play.
Under the lotus plants he lies, in the shelter of the reeds and in the marsh.21It lies under the lotus plants, hidden by the reeds in the marsh.
For his shade the lotus trees cover him; the willows of the brook surround him.22The lotus plants give it shade among the willows beside the stream.
Behold, if the river is turbulent he is not frightened; he is confident though Jordan rushes against his mouth.23It is not disturbed by the raging river, not concerned when the swelling Jordan rushes around it.
Can one take him by his eyes, or pierce his nose with a snare?24No one can catch it off guard or put a ring in its nose and lead it away.
