After the uproar was over, Paul sent for the disciples, encouraged them, and after saying good-bye, departed to go to Macedonia.1When the uproar had ended, Paul sent for the disciples. And after encouraging them, he said goodbye to them and left for Macedonia.
And when he had passed through those areas and exhorted them at length, he came to Greece2After traveling through that area and speaking many words of encouragement, he arrived in Greece,
and stayed three months. When he was about to set sail for Syria, a plot was devised against him by the Jews, so a decision was made to go back through Macedonia.3where he stayed three months. And when the Jews formed a plot against him as he was about to sail for Syria, he decided to go back through Macedonia.
He was accompanied by Sopater son of Pyrrhus from Berea, Aristarchus and Secundus from Thessalonica, Gaius from Derbe, Timothy, and Tychicus and Trophimus from Asia. 4Paul was accompanied by Sopater son of Pyrrhus from Berea, Aristarchus and Secundus from Thessalonica, Gaius from Derbe, Timothy, and Tychicus and Trophimus from the province of Asia.
These men went on ahead and waited for us in Troas,5These men went on ahead and waited for us in Troas.
but we sailed away from Philippi after the days of Unleavened Bread. In five days we reached them at Troas, where we spent seven days. 6And after the Feast of Unleavened Bread, we sailed from Philippi, and five days later we rejoined them in Troas, where we stayed seven days.
On the first day of the week, we assembled to break bread. Paul spoke to them, and since he was about to depart the next day, he extended his message until midnight. 7On the first day of the week we came together to break bread. Since Paul was ready to leave the next day, he talked to them and kept on speaking until midnight.
There were many lamps in the room upstairs where we were assembled, 8Now there were many lamps in the upper room where we were gathered.
and a young man named Eutychus was sitting on a window sill and sank into a deep sleep as Paul kept on speaking. When he was overcome by sleep, he fell down from the third story and was picked up dead. 9And a certain young man named Eutychus, seated in the window, was sinking into a deep sleep as Paul talked on and on. When he was sound asleep, he fell from the third story and was picked up dead.
But Paul went down, fell on him, embraced him, and said, "Don't be alarmed, for his life is in him!"10But Paul went down, threw himself on the young man, and embraced him. “Do not be alarmed!” he said. “He is still alive!”
After going upstairs, breaking the bread, and eating, Paul conversed a considerable time until dawn. Then he left. 11Then Paul went back upstairs, broke bread, and ate. And after speaking until daybreak, he departed.
They brought the boy home alive and were greatly comforted. 12And the people were greatly relieved to take the boy home alive.
Then we went on ahead to the ship and sailed for Assos, intending to take Paul on board there. For these were his instructions, since he himself was going by land. 13We went on ahead to the ship and sailed to Assos, where we were to take Paul aboard. He had arranged this because he was going there on foot.
When he met us at Assos, we took him on board and came to Mitylene. 14And when he met us at Assos, we took him aboard and went on to Mitylene.
Sailing from there, the next day we arrived off Chios. The following day we crossed over to Samos, and the day after, we came to Miletus.15Sailing on from there, we arrived the next day opposite Chios. The day after that we arrived at Samos, and on the following day we came to Miletus.
For Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus so he would not have to spend time in Asia, because he was hurrying to be in Jerusalem, if possible, for the day of Pentecost. 16Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus to avoid spending time in the province of Asia, because he was in a hurry to reach Jerusalem, if possible, by the day of Pentecost.
Now from Miletus, he sent to Ephesus and called for the elders of the church. 17From Miletus, Paul sent to Ephesus for the elders of the church.
And when they came to him, he said to them: "You know, from the first day I set foot in Asia, how I was with you the whole time--18When they came to him, he said, “You know how I lived the whole time I was with you, from the first day I arrived in the province of Asia.
serving the Lord with all humility, with tears, and with the trials that came to me through the plots of the Jews--19I served the Lord with great humility and with tears, especially in the trials that came upon me through the plots of the Jews.
and that I did not shrink back from proclaiming to you anything that was profitable or from teaching it to you in public and from house to house.20I did not shrink back from declaring anything that was helpful to you as I taught you publicly and from house to house,
I testified to both Jews and Greeks about repentance toward God and faith in our Lord Jesus." 21testifying to Jews and Greeks alike about repentance to God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.
And now I am on my way to Jerusalem, bound in my spirit, not knowing what I will encounter there,22And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there.
except that in town after town the Holy Spirit testifies to me that chains and afflictions are waiting for me.23I only know that in town after town the Holy Spirit warns me that chains and afflictions await me.
But I count my life of no value to myself, so that I may finish my course and the ministry I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of God's grace." 24But I consider my life of no value to me, if only I may finish my course and complete the ministry I have received from the Lord Jesus—the ministry of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.
And now I know that none of you will ever see my face again--everyone I went about preaching the kingdom to. 25Now I know that none of you among whom I have preached the kingdom will see my face again.
Therefore I testify to you this day that I am innocent of everyone's blood,26Therefore I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all men.
for I did not shrink back from declaring to you the whole plan of God.27For I did not shrink back from declaring to you the whole will of God.
Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock that the Holy Spirit has appointed you to as overseers, to shepherd the church of God, which He purchased with His own blood.28Keep watch over yourselves and the entire flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which He purchased with His own blood.
I know that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. 29I know that after my departure, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock.
And men will rise up from your own number with deviant doctrines to lure the disciples into following them.30Even from your own number, men will rise up and distort the truth to draw away disciples after them.
Therefore be on the alert, remembering that night and day for three years I did not stop warning each one of you with tears." 31Therefore be alert and remember that for three years I never stopped warning each of you night and day with tears.
And now I commit you to God and to the message of His grace, which is able to build you up and to give you an inheritance among all who are sanctified. 32And now I commit you to God and to the word of His grace, which can build you up and give you an inheritance among all who are sanctified.
I have not coveted anyone's silver or gold or clothing.33I have not coveted anyone’s silver or gold or clothing.
You yourselves know that these hands have provided for my needs and for those who were with me.34You yourselves know that these hands of mine have ministered to my own needs and those of my companions.
In every way I've shown you that by laboring like this, it is necessary to help the weak and to keep in mind the words of the Lord Jesus, for He said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.'" 35In everything, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words of the Lord Jesus Himself: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ”
After he said this, he knelt down and prayed with all of them.36When Paul had said this, he knelt down with all of them and prayed.
There was a great deal of weeping by everyone. They embraced Paul and kissed him, 37They all wept openly as they embraced Paul and kissed him.
grieving most of all over his statement that they would never see his face again. Then they escorted him to the ship. 38They were especially grieved by his statement that they would never see his face again. Then they accompanied him to the ship.
