HCSB Parallel ESV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
Holman Christian Standard BibleEnglish Standard Version
An oracle against Tyre: Wail, ships of Tarshish, for your haven has been destroyed. Word has reached them from the land of Cyprus. 1The oracle concerning Tyre. Wail, O ships of Tarshish, for Tyre is laid waste, without house or harbor! From the land of Cyprus it is revealed to them.
Mourn, inhabitants of the coastland, you merchants of Sidon; your agents have crossed the sea 2Be still, O inhabitants of the coast; the merchants of Sidon, who cross the sea, have filled you.
on many waters. Tyre's revenue was the grain from Shihor-- the harvest of the Nile. She was the merchant among the nations. 3And on many waters your revenue was the grain of Shihor, the harvest of the Nile; you were the merchant of the nations.
Be ashamed Sidon, the stronghold of the sea, for the sea has spoken:" I have not been in labor or given birth. I have not raised young men or brought up young women." 4Be ashamed, O Sidon, for the sea has spoken, the stronghold of the sea, saying: “I have neither labored nor given birth, I have neither reared young men nor brought up young women.”
When the news reaches Egypt, they will be in anguish over the news about Tyre. 5When the report comes to Egypt, they will be in anguish over the report about Tyre.
Cross over to Tarshish; wail, inhabitants of the coastland! 6Cross over to Tarshish; wail, O inhabitants of the coast!
Is this your jubilant city, whose origin was in ancient times, whose feet have taken her to settle far away? 7Is this your exultant city whose origin is from days of old, whose feet carried her to settle far away?
Who planned this against Tyre, the bestower of crowns, whose traders are princes, whose merchants are the honored ones of the earth? 8Who has purposed this against Tyre, the bestower of crowns, whose merchants were princes, whose traders were the honored of the earth?
The LORD of Hosts planned it, to desecrate all its glorious beauty, to disgrace all the honored ones of the earth. 9The LORD of hosts has purposed it, to defile the pompous pride of all glory, to dishonor all the honored of the earth.
Overflow your land like the Nile, daughter of Tarshish; there is no longer anything to restrain you. 10Cross over your land like the Nile, O daughter of Tarshish; there is no restraint anymore.
He stretched out His hand over the sea; He made kingdoms tremble. The LORD has commanded that the Canaanite fortresses be destroyed. 11He has stretched out his hand over the sea; he has shaken the kingdoms; the LORD has given command concerning Canaan to destroy its strongholds.
He said," You will not rejoice anymore, ravished young woman, daughter of Sidon. Get up and cross over to Cyprus-- even there you will have no rest!" 12And he said: “You will no more exult, O oppressed virgin daughter of Sidon; arise, cross over to Cyprus, even there you will have no rest.”
Look at the land of the Chaldeans-- a people who no longer exist. Assyria destined it for desert creatures. They set up their siege towers and stripped its palaces. They made it a ruin. 13Behold the land of the Chaldeans! This is the people that was not; Assyria destined it for wild beasts. They erected their siege towers, they stripped her palaces bare, they made her a ruin.
Wail, ships of Tarshish, because your fortress is destroyed! 14Wail, O ships of Tarshish, for your stronghold is laid waste.
On that day Tyre will be forgotten for 70 years--the life span of one king. At the end of 70 years, what the song says about the prostitute will happen to Tyre: 15In that day Tyre will be forgotten for seventy years, like the days of one king. At the end of seventy years, it will happen to Tyre as in the song of the prostitute:
Pick up your lyre, stroll through the city, prostitute forgotten by men. Play skillfully, sing many a song, and you will be thought of again. 16“Take a harp; go about the city, O forgotten prostitute! Make sweet melody; sing many songs, that you may be remembered.”
And at the end of the 70 years, the LORD will restore Tyre and she will go back into business, prostituting herself with all the kingdoms of the world on the face of the earth. 17At the end of seventy years, the LORD will visit Tyre, and she will return to her wages and will prostitute herself with all the kingdoms of the world on the face of the earth.
But her profits and wages will be dedicated to the LORD. They will not be stored or saved, for her profit will go to those who live in the LORD's presence, to provide them with ample food and sacred clothing. 18Her merchandise and her wages will be holy to the LORD. It will not be stored or hoarded, but her merchandise will supply abundant food and fine clothing for those who dwell before the LORD.
