1Before the Passover Festival, Jesus knew that His hour had come to depart from this world to the Father. Having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.

1Now before the Feast of the Passover, Jesus knowing that His hour had come that He would depart out of this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.

2Now by the time of supper, the Devil had already put it into the heart of Judas, Simon Iscariot's son, to betray Him.

2During supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray Him,

3Jesus knew that the Father had given everything into His hands, that He had come from God, and that He was going back to God.

3Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come forth from God and was going back to God,

4So He got up from supper, laid aside His robe, took a towel, and tied it around Himself.

4got up from supper, and laid aside His garments; and taking a towel, He girded Himself.

5Next, He poured water into a basin and began to wash His disciples' feet and to dry them with the towel tied around Him.

5Then He poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.

6He came to Simon Peter, who asked Him, "Lord, are You going to wash my feet?"

6So He came to Simon Peter. He said to Him, "Lord, do You wash my feet?"

7Jesus answered him, "What I'm doing you don't understand now, but afterward you will know.""

7Jesus answered and said to him, "What I do you do not realize now, but you will understand hereafter."

8You will never wash my feet--ever!" Peter said. Jesus replied, "If I don't wash you, you have no part with Me."

8Peter said to Him, "Never shall You wash my feet!" Jesus answered him, "If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me."

9Simon Peter said to Him, "Lord, not only my feet, but also my hands and my head."

9Simon Peter said to Him, "Lord, then wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head."

10"One who has bathed," Jesus told him, "doesn't need to wash anything except his feet, but he is completely clean. You are clean, but not all of you."

10Jesus said to him, "He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you."

11For He knew who would betray Him. This is why He said, "You are not all clean."

11For He knew the one who was betraying Him; for this reason He said, "Not all of you are clean."

12When Jesus had washed their feet and put on His robe, He reclined again and said to them, "Do you know what I have done for you?

12So when He had washed their feet, and taken His garments and reclined at the table again, He said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you?

13You call Me Teacher and Lord. This is well said, for I am.

13"You call Me Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I am.

14So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet.

14"If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet.

15For I have given you an example that you also should do just as I have done for you.

15"For I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you.

16"I assure you: A slave is not greater than his master, and a messenger is not greater than the one who sent him.

16"Truly, truly, I say to you, a slave is not greater than his master, nor is one who is sent greater than the one who sent him.

17If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.

17"If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.

18I'm not speaking about all of you; I know those I have chosen. But the Scripture must be fulfilled: The one who eats My bread has raised his heel against Me.

18"I do not speak of all of you. I know the ones I have chosen; but it is that the Scripture may be fulfilled, 'HE WHO EATS MY BREAD HAS LIFTED UP HIS HEEL AGAINST ME.'

19"I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am He.

19"From now on I am telling you before it comes to pass, so that when it does occur, you may believe that I am He.

20I assure you: Whoever receives anyone I send receives Me, and the one who receives Me receives Him who sent Me."

20"Truly, truly, I say to you, he who receives whomever I send receives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me."

21When Jesus had said this, He was troubled in His spirit and testified, "I assure you: One of you will betray Me!"

21When Jesus had said this, He became troubled in spirit, and testified and said, "Truly, truly, I say to you, that one of you will betray Me."

22The disciples started looking at one another--uncertain which one He was speaking about.

22The disciples began looking at one another, at a loss to know of which one He was speaking.

23One of His disciples, the one Jesus loved, was reclining close beside Jesus.

23There was reclining on Jesus' bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved.

24Simon Peter motioned to him to find out who it was He was talking about.

24So Simon Peter gestured to him, and said to him, "Tell us who it is of whom He is speaking."

25So he leaned back against Jesus and asked Him, "Lord, who is it?"

25He, leaning back thus on Jesus' bosom, said to Him, "Lord, who is it?"

26Jesus replied, "He's the one I give the piece of bread to after I have dipped it." When He had dipped the bread, He gave it to Judas, Simon Iscariot's son.

26Jesus then answered, "That is the one for whom I shall dip the morsel and give it to him." So when He had dipped the morsel, He took and gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.

27After Judas ate the piece of bread, Satan entered him. Therefore Jesus told him, "What you're doing, do quickly."

27After the morsel, Satan then entered into him. Therefore Jesus said to him, "What you do, do quickly."

28None of those reclining at the table knew why He told him this.

28Now no one of those reclining at the table knew for what purpose He had said this to him.

29Since Judas kept the money-bag, some thought that Jesus was telling him, "Buy what we need for the festival," or that he should give something to the poor.

29For some were supposing, because Judas had the money box, that Jesus was saying to him, "Buy the things we have need of for the feast"; or else, that he should give something to the poor.

30After receiving the piece of bread, he went out immediately. And it was night.

30So after receiving the morsel he went out immediately; and it was night.

31When he had gone out, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in Him.

31Therefore when he had gone out, Jesus said, "Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in Him;

32If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself and will glorify Him at once.

32if God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and will glorify Him immediately.

33"Children, I am with you a little while longer. You will look for Me, and just as I told the Jews, Where I am going you cannot come,' so now I tell you.

33"Little children, I am with you a little while longer. You will seek Me; and as I said to the Jews, now I also say to you, 'Where I am going, you cannot come.'

34"I give you a new command: Love one another. Just as I have loved you, you must also love one another.

34"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another.

35By this all people will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.""

35"By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another."

36Lord," Simon Peter said to Him, "where are You going?" Jesus answered, "Where I am going you cannot follow Me now, but you will follow later.""

36Simon Peter said to Him, "Lord, where are You going?" Jesus answered, "Where I go, you cannot follow Me now; but you will follow later."

37Lord," Peter asked, "why can't I follow You now? I will lay down my life for You!"

37Peter said to Him, "Lord, why can I not follow You right now? I will lay down my life for You."

38Jesus replied, "Will you lay down your life for Me? I assure you: A rooster will not crow until you have denied Me three times.

38Jesus answered, "Will you lay down your life for Me? Truly, truly, I say to you, a rooster will not crow until you deny Me three times.
