After Jesus had said these things, He went out with His disciples across the Kidron Valley, where there was a garden, and He and His disciples went into it. 1When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was a garden, and he and his disciples went into it.
Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place, because Jesus often met there with His disciples. 2Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.
So Judas took a company of soldiers and some temple police from the chief priests and the Pharisees and came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. 3So Judas came to the garden, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.
Then Jesus, knowing everything that was about to happen to Him, went out and said to them, "Who is it you're looking for?"" 4Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, "Who is it you want?"
Jesus the Nazarene," they answered. "I am He," Jesus told them. Judas, who betrayed Him, was also standing with them. 5"Jesus of Nazareth," they replied. "I am he," Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.)
When He told them, "I am He," they stepped back and fell to the ground. 6When Jesus said, "I am he," they drew back and fell to the ground.
Then He asked them again, "Who is it you're looking for?"" Jesus the Nazarene," they said. 7Again he asked them, "Who is it you want?" "Jesus of Nazareth," they said.
"I told you I am He," Jesus replied. "So if you're looking for Me, let these men go."8Jesus answered, "I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go."
This was to fulfill the words He had said: "I have not lost one of those You have given Me." 9This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: "I have not lost one of those you gave me."
Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it, struck the high priest's slave, and cut off his right ear. (The slave's name was Malchus.) 10Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant's name was Malchus.)
At that, Jesus said to Peter, "Sheathe your sword! Am I not to drink the cup the Father has given Me?" 11Jesus commanded Peter, "Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?"
Then the company of soldiers, the commander, and the Jewish temple police arrested Jesus and tied Him up. 12Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials arrested Jesus. They bound him
First they led Him to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. 13and brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year.
Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that it was advantageous that one man should die for the people. 14Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jewish leaders that it would be good if one man died for the people.
Meanwhile, Simon Peter was following Jesus, as was another disciple. That disciple was an acquaintance of the high priest; so he went with Jesus into the high priest's courtyard. 15Simon Peter and another disciple were following Jesus. Because this disciple was known to the high priest, he went with Jesus into the high priest's courtyard,
But Peter remained standing outside by the door. So the other disciple, the one known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the girl who was the doorkeeper and brought Peter in. 16but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the servant girl on duty there and brought Peter in.
Then the slave girl who was the doorkeeper said to Peter, "You aren't one of this man's disciples too, are you?"" I am not!" he said. 17"You aren't one of this man's disciples too, are you?" she asked Peter. He replied, "I am not."
Now the slaves and the temple police had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold. They were standing there warming themselves, and Peter was standing with them, warming himself. 18It was cold, and the servants and officials stood around a fire they had made to keep warm. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.
The high priest questioned Jesus about His disciples and about His teaching. 19Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.
"I have spoken openly to the world," Jesus answered him. "I have always taught in the synagogue and in the temple complex, where all the Jews congregate, and I haven't spoken anything in secret. 20"I have spoken openly to the world," Jesus replied. "I always taught in synagogues or at the temple, where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret.
Why do you question Me? Question those who heard what I told them. Look, they know what I said." 21Why question me? Ask those who heard me. Surely they know what I said."
When He had said these things, one of the temple police standing by slapped Jesus, saying, "Is this the way you answer the high priest?" 22When Jesus said this, one of the officials nearby slapped him in the face. "Is this the way you answer the high priest?" he demanded.
"If I have spoken wrongly," Jesus answered him, "give evidence about the wrong; but if rightly, why do you hit Me?" 23"If I said something wrong," Jesus replied, "testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?"
Then Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest. 24Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said to him, "You aren't one of His disciples too, are you?" He denied it and said, "I am not!" 25Meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself. So they asked him, "You aren't one of his disciples too, are you?" He denied it, saying, "I am not."
One of the high priest's slaves, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said, "Didn't I see you with Him in the garden?" 26One of the high priest's servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, challenged him, "Didn't I see you with him in the garden?"
Peter then denied it again. Immediately a rooster crowed. 27Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow.
Then they took Jesus from Caiaphas to the governor's headquarters. It was early morning. They did not enter the headquarters themselves; otherwise they would be defiled and unable to eat the Passover. 28Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace, because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover.
Then Pilate came out to them and said, "What charge do you bring against this man?" 29So Pilate came out to them and asked, "What charges are you bringing against this man?"
They answered him, "If this man weren't a criminal, we wouldn't have handed Him over to you." 30"If he were not a criminal," they replied, "we would not have handed him over to you."
So Pilate told them, "Take Him yourselves and judge Him according to your law."" It's not legal for us to put anyone to death," the Jews declared. 31Pilate said, "Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law." "But we have no right to execute anyone," they objected.
They said this so that Jesus' words might be fulfilled signifying what kind of death He was going to die. 32This took place to fulfill what Jesus had said about the kind of death he was going to die.
Then Pilate went back into the headquarters, summoned Jesus, and said to Him, "Are You the King of the Jews?" 33Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?"
Jesus answered, "Are you asking this on your own, or have others told you about Me?"" 34"Is that your own idea," Jesus asked, "or did others talk to you about me?"
I'm not a Jew, am I?" Pilate replied. "Your own nation and the chief priests handed You over to me. What have You done?" 35"Am I a Jew?" Pilate replied. "Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?"
"My kingdom is not of this world," said Jesus. "If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I wouldn't be handed over to the Jews. As it is, My kingdom does not have its origin here." " 36Jesus said, "My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place."
You are a king then?" Pilate asked. "You say that I'm a king," Jesus replied. "I was born for this, and I have come into the world for this: to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to My voice."" 37"You are a king, then!" said Pilate. Jesus answered, "You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me."
What is truth?" said Pilate. After he had said this, he went out to the Jews again and told them, "I find no grounds for charging Him. 38"What is truth?" retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, "I find no basis for a charge against him.
You have a custom that I release one prisoner to you at the Passover. So, do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?" 39But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release 'the king of the Jews'?"
They shouted back, "Not this man, but Barabbas!" Now Barabbas was a revolutionary. 40They shouted back, "No, not him! Give us Barabbas!" Now Barabbas had taken part in an uprising.
