International Standard VersionEnglish Standard Version
After this, Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 1Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
After fasting for 40 days and 40 nights, he finally became hungry.2And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.
Then the tempter came. "Since you are the Son of God," he said, "tell these stones to become loaves of bread."3And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.”
But he answered, "It is written, 'One must not live on bread alone, but on every word coming out of the mouth of God.'" 4But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
Then the devil took him to the Holy City and had him stand on the highest point of the Temple. 5Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple
He told Jesus, "Since you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, because it is written, 'God will put his angels in charge of you,' and, 'With their hands they will hold you up, so that you will never hit your foot against a rock.'" 6and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, “‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and “‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”
Jesus responded to him, "It is also written, 'You must not tempt the Lord your God.'" 7Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
Once more the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world, along with their splendor. 8Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.
He told Jesus, "I will give you all these things if you will bow down and worship me!"9And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.”
Then Jesus told him, "Go away, Satan! Because it is written, 'You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.'" 10Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’”
So the devil left him, and angels came and began ministering to him.11Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.
Now when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he went back to Galilee. 12Now when he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee.
He left Nazareth and settled in Capernaum by the sea, in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali, 13And leaving Nazareth he went and lived in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali,
in order to fulfill what was declared by the prophet Isaiah when he said,14so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:
"O Land of Zebulun and Land of Naphtali, on the road to the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the unbelievers! 15“The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—
The people living in darkness have seen a great light, and for those living in the land and shadow of death, a light has risen." 16the people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned.”
From then on, Jesus began to announce, "Repent, because the kingdom from heaven is near!"17From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
While Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers—Simon (also called Peter) and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the sea, because they were fishermen. 18While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.
"Follow me," he told them, "and I will make you fishers of people!" 19And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
So at once they left their nets and followed him. 20Immediately they left their nets and followed him.
Going on from there he saw two other brothers—James, son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee repairing their nets. When he called them, 21And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them.
they immediately left the boat and their father and followed him.22Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.
Then he went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every illness among the people. 23And he went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction among the people.
His fame spread throughout Syria, and people brought to him everyone who was sick—those afflicted with various diseases and pains, the demon-possessed, the epileptics, and the paralyzed—and he healed them. 24So his fame spread throughout all Syria, and they brought him all the sick, those afflicted with various diseases and pains, those oppressed by demons, those having seizures, and paralytics, and he healed them.
Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and from across the Jordan followed him.25And great crowds followed him from Galilee and the Decapolis, and from Jerusalem and Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.
