After this, Paul left Athens and went to Corinth. 1After this, he left Athens and went to Corinth,
There he found a Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla because Claudius had ordered all the Jews to leave Rome. Paul went to visit them, 2where he found a Jewish man named Aquila, a native of Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla because Claudius had ordered all the Jews to leave Rome. Paul came to them,
and because they had the same trade he stayed with them. They worked together because they were tentmakers by trade. 3and being of the same occupation, stayed with them and worked, for they were tentmakers by trade.
Every Sabbath, he would speak in the synagogue, trying to persuade both Jews and Greeks. 4He reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath and tried to persuade both Jews and Greeks.
But when Silas and Timothy arrived from Macedonia, Paul devoted himself entirely to the word as he emphatically assured the Jews that Jesus is the Messiah.5When Silas and Timothy came down from Macedonia, Paul was occupied with preaching the message and solemnly testified to the Jews that Jesus is the Messiah.
But when they began to oppose him and insult him, he shook out his clothes in protest and told them, "Your blood be on your own heads! I am innocent. From now on I will go to the gentiles."6But when they resisted and blasphemed, he shook his robe and told them, "Your blood is on your own heads! I am innocent. From now on I will go to the Gentiles."
Then he left that place and went to the home of a man named Titius Justus, who worshipped God and whose house was next door to the synagogue. 7So he left there and went to the house of a man named Titius Justus, a worshiper of God, whose house was next door to the synagogue.
Now Crispus, the leader of the synagogue, believed in the Lord, along with his whole family. Many Corinthians who heard Paul also believed and were baptized.8Crispus, the leader of the synagogue, believed the Lord, along with his whole household. Many of the Corinthians, when they heard, believed and were baptized.
One night, the Lord told Paul in a vision, "Stop being afraid to speak out! Don't remain silent! 9Then the Lord said to Paul in a night vision, "Don't be afraid, but keep on speaking and don't be silent.
For I am with you, and no one will lay a hand on you or harm you, because I have many people in this city." 10For I am with you, and no one will lay a hand on you to hurt you, because I have many people in this city."
So Paul lived there for a year and a half and continued to teach the word of God among the people there. 11And he stayed there a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them.
While Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jewish leaders gathered together, attacked Paul, and brought him before the judge's seat. 12While Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews made a united attack against Paul and brought him to the judge's bench."
They said, "This man is persuading people to worship God in ways that are contrary to the Law."13This man," they said, "persuades people to worship God contrary to the law!"
Paul was about to speak when Gallio admonished the Jewish leaders, "If there were some misdemeanor or crime involved, it would be reasonable to put up with you Jews. 14As Paul was about to open his mouth, Gallio said to the Jews, "If it were a matter of a crime or of moral evil, it would be reasonable for me to put up with you Jews.
But since it is a question about words, names, and your own Law, you will have to take care of that yourselves. I refuse to be a judge in these matters." 15But if these are questions about words, names, and your own law, see to it yourselves. I don't want to be a judge of such things."
So he drove them away from the judge's seat. 16So he drove them from the judge's bench.
Then all of them took Sosthenes, the synagogue leader, and began beating him in front of the judge's seat. But Gallio paid no attention to any of this.17Then they all seized Sosthenes, the leader of the synagogue, and beat him in front of the judge's bench. But none of these things concerned Gallio.
After staying there for quite a while longer, Paul said goodbye to the brothers and sailed for Syria, accompanied by Priscilla and Aquila. He had his hair cut in Cenchrea, since he was under a vow. 18So Paul, having stayed on for many days, said good-bye to the brothers and sailed away to Syria. Priscilla and Aquila were with him. He shaved his head at Cenchreae because he had taken a vow.
When they arrived in Ephesus, he left Priscilla and Aquila there. Then he went into the synagogue and had a discussion with the Jews. 19When they reached Ephesus he left them there, but he himself entered the synagogue and engaged in discussion with the Jews.
They asked him to stay longer, but he refused. 20And though they asked him to stay for a longer time, he declined,
As he told them goodbye, he said, "I will come back to you again if it is God's will." Then he set sail from Ephesus. 21but he said good-bye and stated, "I'll come back to you again, if God wills." Then he set sail from Ephesus.
When he arrived in Caesarea, he went up to Jerusalem, greeted the church there, and then returned to Antioch. 22On landing at Caesarea, he went up and greeted the church and went down to Antioch.
After spending some time there, he departed and went from place to place through the region of Galatia and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples.23And after spending some time there, he set out, traveling through one place after another in the Galatian territory and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples.
Meanwhile, a Jew named Apollos arrived in Ephesus. He was a native of Alexandria, an eloquent man, and well versed in the Scriptures. 24A Jew named Apollos, a native Alexandrian, an eloquent man who was powerful in the use of the Scriptures, arrived in Ephesus.
He had been instructed in the Lord's way, and with spiritual fervor he kept speaking and teaching accurately about Jesus, although he knew only about John's baptism. 25This man had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught the things about Jesus accurately, although he knew only John's baptism.
He began to speak boldly in the synagogue, but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him home and explained God's way to him more accurately. 26He began to speak boldly in the synagogue. After Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him home and explained the way of God to him more accurately.
When Apollos wanted to cross over to Achaia, the brothers wrote to the disciples there, urging them to welcome him. On his arrival he greatly helped those who, through God's grace, had believed. 27When he wanted to cross over to Achaia, the brothers wrote to the disciples urging them to welcome him. After he arrived, he greatly helped those who had believed through grace.
He successfully refuted the Jews in public and proved by the Scriptures that Jesus is the Messiah. 28For he vigorously refuted the Jews in public, demonstrating through the Scriptures that Jesus is the Messiah.
