Moses called all of Israel together and told them: "Listen, Israel! Today I'm going to announce God's laws and regulations so that you will learn them and take care to obey them. 1Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, "Israel, listen to the statutes and ordinances I am proclaiming as you hear them today. Learn and follow them carefully.
When the LORD our God made a covenant with us in Horeb, 2The LORD our God made a covenant with us at Horeb.
it was not with our ancestors that the LORD made this covenant, but with us—we who are here today—all of us who are now living. 3He did not make this covenant with our fathers, but with all of us who are alive here today.
The LORD spoke to you face to face on the mountain from the fire. 4The LORD spoke to you face to face from the fire on the mountain.
I stood at that time as mediator between the LORD and you to declare his message to you, because you were afraid of the fire and would not go up the mountain. He said:5At that time I was standing between the LORD and you to report the word of the LORD to you, because you were afraid of the fire and did not go up the mountain. And He said:
"'I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt—from the house of slavery. 6I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the place of slavery.
"'You are to have no other gods besides me7Do not have other gods besides Me.
"You are not to make for yourselves a carved image resembling any form in the heavens above, on earth below, or in the waters under the earth. 8Do not make an idol for yourself in the shape of anything in the heavens above or on the earth below or in the waters under the earth.
You are not to bow down to them in worship or serve them, because I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the iniquity of their parents to the third and fourth generations of those who hate me, 9You must not bow down to them or worship them, because I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the fathers' sin to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me,
but showing gracious love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments.10but showing faithful love to a thousand generations of those who love Me and keep My commands.
"'You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, because the LORD will not leave the one who misues his name unpunished.11Do not misuse the name of the LORD your God, because the LORD will not leave anyone unpunished who misuses His name.
"'You are to keep the Sabbath day holy, just as the LORD your God commanded. 12Be careful to remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy as the LORD your God has commanded you.
Six days you are to labor and do all your work, 13You are to labor six days and do all your work,
but the seventh day is a Sabbath for the LORD your God. You are not to do any work—neither you, your children, your male and female servants, your oxen and donkeys, nor any of your livestock—as well as any of the foreigners who live among you, so that your male and female servants may rest as you do. 14but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. You must not do any work--you, your son or daughter, your male or female slave, your ox or donkey, any of your livestock, or the foreigner who lives within your gates, so that your male and female slaves may rest as you do.
You are to remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, but the LORD your God brought you out from there with great power and a show of force. Therefore, the LORD your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day.15Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God brought you out of there with a strong hand and an outstretched arm. That is why the LORD your God has commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.
"'You are to honor your father and your mother, just as the LORD your God commanded you, so that your life will be long and things will go well for you in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.16Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and so that you may prosper in the land the LORD your God is giving you.
"'You are not to murder.17Do not murder.
"'You are not to commit adultery.18Do not commit adultery.
"'You are not to steal.19Do not steal.
"'You are not to testify falsely against your neighbor.20Do not give dishonest testimony against your neighbor.
"'You are not to desire your neighbor's wife nor covet your neighbor's house, his fields, his male and female servants, his ox, his donkey, nor anything that concerns your neighbor.'"21Do not covet your neighbor's wife or desire your neighbor's house, his field, his male or female slave, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor."
"The LORD declared these commands in a loud voice to your entire assembly on the mountain from out of the fire and dark clouds, and nothing more was added. He inscribed them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me. 22The LORD spoke these commands in a loud voice to your entire assembly from the fire, cloud, and thick darkness on the mountain; He added nothing more. He wrote them on two stone tablets and gave them to me.
When you heard the voice from the darkness while the mountain was blazing, all the leaders and elders of your tribes came to me and said: 23All of you approached me with your tribal leaders and elders when you heard the voice from the darkness and while the mountain was blazing with fire.
The LORD our God truly has displayed his glory and power, for we heard him from out of the fire today. We have witnessed how God spoke to human beings, yet they lived. 24You said, 'Look, the LORD our God has shown us His glory and greatness, and we have heard His voice from the fire. Today we have seen that God speaks with a person, yet he still lives.
Now therefore, why should we die? This great fire will consume us. If we continue to listen to the voice of the LORD our God any longer, we'll die. 25But now, why should we die? This great fire will consume us and we will die if we hear the voice of the LORD our God any longer.
For what mortal man has heard the voice of the living God speaking out of the fire like we did, and lived? 26For who out of all mankind has heard the voice of the living God speaking from the fire, as we have, and lived?
As for you, go near and listen to everything that the LORD our God will say to you, then repeat it to us, and we'll listen and obey.'27Go near and listen to everything the LORD our God says. Then you can tell us everything the LORD our God tells you; we will listen and obey.'"
"The LORD heard what you said. He told me: 'I've heard what this people said. Everything they said was good. 28The LORD heard your words when you spoke to me. He said to me, 'I have heard the words that these people have spoken to you. Everything they have said is right.
If only they would commit to fear me and keep all my commands, then it will go well with them and their children forever.29If only they had such a heart to fear Me and keep all My commands always, so that they and their children will prosper forever.
Go and tell them to return to their tents, 30Go and tell them: Return to your tents.
but you stand here with me and I'll speak to you all the commands, decrees, and laws that you must teach them to observe in the land that I'm giving you to possess. 31But you stand here with Me, and I will tell you every command--the statutes and ordinances--you are to teach them, so that they may follow them in the land I am giving them to possess.'"
You must be careful to do what the LORD your God commanded you, turning neither to the left nor to the right. 32Be careful to do as the LORD your God has commanded you; you are not to turn aside to the right or the left.
You are to walk in every pathway that the LORD your God commanded you, so that life may go well for you, and so that you will prolong your days in the land that you will possess.'"33Follow the whole instruction the LORD your God has commanded you, so that you may live, prosper, and have a long life in the land you will possess."
