Moses called all of Israel together and told them: "Listen, Israel! Today I'm going to announce God's laws and regulations so that you will learn them and take care to obey them. 1Then Moses called all the people of Israel together and said to them: "Listen, Israel, to the statutes and ordinances that I am about to deliver to you today; learn them and be careful to keep them!
When the LORD our God made a covenant with us in Horeb, 2The LORD our God made a covenant with us at Horeb.
it was not with our ancestors that the LORD made this covenant, but with us—we who are here today—all of us who are now living. 3He did not make this covenant with our ancestors but with us, we who are here today, all of us living now.
The LORD spoke to you face to face on the mountain from the fire. 4The LORD spoke face to face with you at the mountain, from the middle of the fire.
I stood at that time as mediator between the LORD and you to declare his message to you, because you were afraid of the fire and would not go up the mountain. He said:5(I was standing between the LORD and you at that time to reveal to you the message of the LORD, because you were afraid of the fire and would not go up the mountain.) He said:
"'I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt—from the house of slavery. 6"I am the LORD your God, he who brought you from the land of Egypt, from the place of slavery.
"'You are to have no other gods besides me7You must not have any other gods besides me.
"You are not to make for yourselves a carved image resembling any form in the heavens above, on earth below, or in the waters under the earth. 8You must not make for yourself an image of anything in heaven above, on earth below, or in the waters beneath.
You are not to bow down to them in worship or serve them, because I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the iniquity of their parents to the third and fourth generations of those who hate me, 9You must not worship or serve them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God. I punish the sons, grandsons, and great-grandsons for the sin of the fathers who reject me,
but showing gracious love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments.10but I show covenant faithfulness to the thousands who choose me and keep my commandments.
"'You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, because the LORD will not leave the one who misues his name unpunished.11You must not make use of the name of the LORD your God for worthless purposes, for the LORD will not exonerate anyone who abuses his name that way.
"'You are to keep the Sabbath day holy, just as the LORD your God commanded. 12Be careful to observe the Sabbath day just as the LORD your God has commanded you.
Six days you are to labor and do all your work, 13You are to work and do all your tasks in six days,
but the seventh day is a Sabbath for the LORD your God. You are not to do any work—neither you, your children, your male and female servants, your oxen and donkeys, nor any of your livestock—as well as any of the foreigners who live among you, so that your male and female servants may rest as you do. 14but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. On that day you must not do any work, you, your son, your daughter, your male slave, your female slave, your ox, your donkey, any other animal, or the foreigner who lives with you, so that your male and female slaves, like yourself, may have rest.
You are to remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, but the LORD your God brought you out from there with great power and a show of force. Therefore, the LORD your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day.15Recall that you were slaves in the land of Egypt and that the LORD your God brought you out of there by strength and power. That is why the LORD your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day.
"'You are to honor your father and your mother, just as the LORD your God commanded you, so that your life will be long and things will go well for you in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.16Honor your father and your mother just as the LORD your God has commanded you to do, so that your days may be extended and that it may go well with you in the land that he is about to give you.
"'You are not to murder.17You must not murder.
"'You are not to commit adultery.18You must not commit adultery.
"'You are not to steal.19You must not steal.
"'You are not to testify falsely against your neighbor.20You must not offer false testimony against another.
"'You are not to desire your neighbor's wife nor covet your neighbor's house, his fields, his male and female servants, his ox, his donkey, nor anything that concerns your neighbor.'"21You must not desire another man's wife, nor should you crave his house, his field, his male and female servants, his ox, his donkey, or anything else he owns."
"The LORD declared these commands in a loud voice to your entire assembly on the mountain from out of the fire and dark clouds, and nothing more was added. He inscribed them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me. 22The LORD said these things to your entire assembly at the mountain from the middle of the fire, the cloud, and the darkness with a loud voice, and that was all he said. Then he inscribed the words on two stone tablets and gave them to me.
When you heard the voice from the darkness while the mountain was blazing, all the leaders and elders of your tribes came to me and said: 23Then, when you heard the voice from the midst of the darkness while the mountain was ablaze, all your tribal leaders and elders approached me.
The LORD our God truly has displayed his glory and power, for we heard him from out of the fire today. We have witnessed how God spoke to human beings, yet they lived. 24You said, "The LORD our God has shown us his great glory and we have heard him speak from the middle of the fire. It is now clear to us that God can speak to human beings and they can keep on living.
Now therefore, why should we die? This great fire will consume us. If we continue to listen to the voice of the LORD our God any longer, we'll die. 25But now, why should we die, because this intense fire will consume us! If we keep hearing the voice of the LORD our God we will die!
For what mortal man has heard the voice of the living God speaking out of the fire like we did, and lived? 26Who is there from the entire human race who has heard the voice of the living God speaking from the middle of the fire as we have, and has lived?
As for you, go near and listen to everything that the LORD our God will say to you, then repeat it to us, and we'll listen and obey.'27You go near so that you can hear everything the LORD our God is saying and then you can tell us whatever he says to you; then we will pay attention and do it."
"The LORD heard what you said. He told me: 'I've heard what this people said. Everything they said was good. 28When the LORD heard you speaking to me, he said to me, "I have heard what these people have said to you--they have spoken well.
If only they would commit to fear me and keep all my commands, then it will go well with them and their children forever.29If only it would really be their desire to fear me and obey all my commandments in the future, so that it may go well with them and their descendants forever.
Go and tell them to return to their tents, 30Go and tell them, 'Return to your tents!'
but you stand here with me and I'll speak to you all the commands, decrees, and laws that you must teach them to observe in the land that I'm giving you to possess. 31But as for you, remain here with me so I can declare to you all the commandments, statutes, and ordinances that you are to teach them, so that they can carry them out in the land I am about to give them."
You must be careful to do what the LORD your God commanded you, turning neither to the left nor to the right. 32Be careful, therefore, to do exactly what the LORD your God has commanded you; do not turn right or left!
You are to walk in every pathway that the LORD your God commanded you, so that life may go well for you, and so that you will prolong your days in the land that you will possess.'"33Walk just as he has commanded you so that you may live, that it may go well with you, and that you may live long in the land you are going to possess.
