Moses called all of Israel together and told them: "Listen, Israel! Today I'm going to announce God's laws and regulations so that you will learn them and take care to obey them. 1Moses called all the people of Israel together and said, “Listen carefully, Israel. Hear the decrees and regulations I am giving you today, so you may learn them and obey them!
When the LORD our God made a covenant with us in Horeb, 2“The LORD our God made a covenant with us at Mount Sinai.
it was not with our ancestors that the LORD made this covenant, but with us—we who are here today—all of us who are now living. 3The LORD did not make this covenant with our ancestors, but with all of us who are alive today.
The LORD spoke to you face to face on the mountain from the fire. 4At the mountain the LORD spoke to you face to face from the heart of the fire.
I stood at that time as mediator between the LORD and you to declare his message to you, because you were afraid of the fire and would not go up the mountain. He said:5I stood as an intermediary between you and the LORD, for you were afraid of the fire and did not want to approach the mountain. He spoke to me, and I passed his words on to you. This is what he said:
"'I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt—from the house of slavery. 6“I am the LORD your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt, the place of your slavery.
"'You are to have no other gods besides me7“You must not have any other god but me.
"You are not to make for yourselves a carved image resembling any form in the heavens above, on earth below, or in the waters under the earth. 8“You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind, or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea.
You are not to bow down to them in worship or serve them, because I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the iniquity of their parents to the third and fourth generations of those who hate me, 9You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected—even children in the third and fourth generations of those who reject me.
but showing gracious love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments.10But I lavish unfailing love for a thousand generations on those who love me and obey my commands.
"'You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, because the LORD will not leave the one who misues his name unpunished.11“You must not misuse the name of the LORD your God. The LORD will not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name.
"'You are to keep the Sabbath day holy, just as the LORD your God commanded. 12“Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, as the LORD your God has commanded you.
Six days you are to labor and do all your work, 13You have six days each week for your ordinary work,
but the seventh day is a Sabbath for the LORD your God. You are not to do any work—neither you, your children, your male and female servants, your oxen and donkeys, nor any of your livestock—as well as any of the foreigners who live among you, so that your male and female servants may rest as you do. 14but the seventh day is a Sabbath day of rest dedicated to the LORD your God. On that day no one in your household may do any work. This includes you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, your oxen and donkeys and other livestock, and any foreigners living among you. All your male and female servants must rest as you do.
You are to remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, but the LORD your God brought you out from there with great power and a show of force. Therefore, the LORD your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day.15Remember that you were once slaves in Egypt, but the LORD your God brought you out with his strong hand and powerful arm. That is why the LORD your God has commanded you to rest on the Sabbath day.
"'You are to honor your father and your mother, just as the LORD your God commanded you, so that your life will be long and things will go well for you in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.16“Honor your father and mother, as the LORD your God commanded you. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the LORD your God is giving you.
"'You are not to murder.17“You must not murder.
"'You are not to commit adultery.18“You must not commit adultery.
"'You are not to steal.19“You must not steal.
"'You are not to testify falsely against your neighbor.20“You must not testify falsely against your neighbor.
"'You are not to desire your neighbor's wife nor covet your neighbor's house, his fields, his male and female servants, his ox, his donkey, nor anything that concerns your neighbor.'"21“You must not covet your neighbor’s wife. You must not covet your neighbor’s house or land, male or female servant, ox or donkey, or anything else that belongs to your neighbor.
"The LORD declared these commands in a loud voice to your entire assembly on the mountain from out of the fire and dark clouds, and nothing more was added. He inscribed them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me. 22“The LORD spoke these words to all of you assembled there at the foot of the mountain. He spoke with a loud voice from the heart of the fire, surrounded by clouds and deep darkness. This was all he said at that time, and he wrote his words on two stone tablets and gave them to me.
When you heard the voice from the darkness while the mountain was blazing, all the leaders and elders of your tribes came to me and said: 23“But when you heard the voice from the heart of the darkness, while the mountain was blazing with fire, all your tribal leaders and elders came to me.
The LORD our God truly has displayed his glory and power, for we heard him from out of the fire today. We have witnessed how God spoke to human beings, yet they lived. 24They said, ‘Look, the LORD our God has shown us his glory and greatness, and we have heard his voice from the heart of the fire. Today we have seen that God can speak to us humans, and yet we live!
Now therefore, why should we die? This great fire will consume us. If we continue to listen to the voice of the LORD our God any longer, we'll die. 25But now, why should we risk death again? If the LORD our God speaks to us again, we will certainly die and be consumed by this awesome fire.
For what mortal man has heard the voice of the living God speaking out of the fire like we did, and lived? 26Can any living thing hear the voice of the living God from the heart of the fire as we did and yet survive?
As for you, go near and listen to everything that the LORD our God will say to you, then repeat it to us, and we'll listen and obey.'27Go yourself and listen to what the LORD our God says. Then come and tell us everything he tells you, and we will listen and obey.’
"The LORD heard what you said. He told me: 'I've heard what this people said. Everything they said was good. 28“The LORD heard the request you made to me. And he said, ‘I have heard what the people said to you, and they are right.
If only they would commit to fear me and keep all my commands, then it will go well with them and their children forever.29Oh, that they would always have hearts like this, that they might fear me and obey all my commands! If they did, they and their descendants would prosper forever.
Go and tell them to return to their tents, 30Go and tell them, “Return to your tents.”
but you stand here with me and I'll speak to you all the commands, decrees, and laws that you must teach them to observe in the land that I'm giving you to possess. 31But you stand here with me so I can give you all my commands, decrees, and regulations. You must teach them to the people so they can obey them in the land I am giving them as their possession.’”
You must be careful to do what the LORD your God commanded you, turning neither to the left nor to the right. 32So Moses told the people, “You must be careful to obey all the commands of the LORD your God, following his instructions in every detail.
You are to walk in every pathway that the LORD your God commanded you, so that life may go well for you, and so that you will prolong your days in the land that you will possess.'"33Stay on the path that the LORD your God has commanded you to follow. Then you will live long and prosperous lives in the land you are about to enter and occupy.
