Meanwhile, the people had gathered by the thousands and were trampling on one another. Jesus began to speak first to his disciples. "Watch out for the yeast—that is, the hypocrisy—of the Pharisees! 1In these circumstances, a crowd of many thousands came together, so that they were trampling on one another. He began to say to His disciples first: "Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
There is nothing covered up that won't be exposed and nothing secret that won't be made known. 2There is nothing covered that won't be uncovered, nothing hidden that won't be made known.
Therefore, what you have said in darkness will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in private rooms will be shouted from the housetops."3Therefore, whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in an ear in private rooms will be proclaimed on the housetops.
"But I tell you, my friends, never be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can't do anything more. 4"And I say to you, My friends, don't fear those who kill the body, and after that can do nothing more.
I'll show you the one you should be afraid of. Be afraid of the one who has the authority to throw you into hell after killing you. Yes, I tell you, be afraid of him!5But I will show you the One to fear: Fear Him who has authority to throw people into hell after death. Yes, I say to you, this is the One to fear!
"Five sparrows are sold for two pennies, aren't they? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. 6Aren't five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten in God's sight.
Why, even all the hairs on your head have been counted! Stop being afraid. You are worth more than a bunch of sparrows."7Indeed, the hairs of your head are all counted. Don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows!
"But I tell you, the Son of Man will acknowledge before God's angels everyone who acknowledges me before people. 8"And I say to you, anyone who acknowledges Me before men, the Son of Man will also acknowledge him before the angels of God,
But whoever denies me before people will be denied before God's angels. 9but whoever denies Me before men will be denied before the angels of God.
Everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but the person who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit won't be forgiven. 10Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but the one who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.
When people bring you before synagogue leaders, rulers, or authorities, don't worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say, 11Whenever they bring you before synagogues and rulers and authorities, don't worry about how you should defend yourselves or what you should say.
because at that time the Holy Spirit will teach you what you are to say."12For the Holy Spirit will teach you at that very hour what must be said."
Then someone in the crowd told him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me."13Someone from the crowd said to Him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me."
But Jesus asked him, "Mister, who appointed me to be a judge or arbitrator over you people?" 14"Friend," He said to him, "who appointed Me a judge or arbitrator over you?"
Then he told them, "Be careful to guard yourselves against every kind of greed, because a person's life doesn't consist of the amount of possessions he has."15He then told them, "Watch out and be on guard against all greed because one's life is not in the abundance of his possessions."
Then he told them a parable. He said, "The land of a certain rich man produced good crops. 16Then He told them a parable: "A rich man's land was very productive.
So he began to think to himself, 'What should I do, since I have no place to store my crops?' 17He thought to himself, What should I do, since I don't have anywhere to store my crops?
Then he said, 'This is what I'll do. I'll tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and I'll store all my grain and goods in them. 18I will do this,' he said. I'll tear down my barns and build bigger ones and store all my grain and my goods there.
Then I'll say to myself, "You've stored up plenty of good things for many years. Take it easy, eat, drink, and enjoy yourself."' 19Then I'll say to myself, "You have many goods stored up for many years. Take it easy; eat, drink, and enjoy yourself."'
But God told him, 'You fool! This very night your life will be demanded back from you. Now who will get the things you've accumulated?' 20"But God said to him, You fool! This very night your life is demanded of you. And the things you have prepared--whose will they be?'
That's how it is with the person who stores up treasures for himself rather than with God."21"That's how it is with the one who stores up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God."
Then Jesus told his disciples, "That's why I'm telling you to stop worrying about your life—what you will eat—or about your body—what you will wear, 22Then He said to His disciples: "Therefore I tell you, don't worry about your life, what you will eat; or about the body, what you will wear.
because life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. 23For life is more than food and the body more than clothing.
Consider the crows. They don't plant or harvest, they don't even have a storeroom or barn, yet God feeds them. How much more valuable are you than birds! 24Consider the ravens: They don't sow or reap; they don't have a storeroom or a barn; yet God feeds them. Aren't you worth much more than the birds?
Can any of you add an hour to the length of your life by worrying? 25Can any of you add a cubit to his height by worrying?
So if you can't do a small thing like that, why worry about other things? 26If then you're not able to do even a little thing, why worry about the rest?
Consider how the lilies grow. They don't work or spin yarn, but I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was clothed like one of them. 27"Consider how the wildflowers grow: They don't labor or spin thread. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was adorned like one of these!
Now if that's the way God clothes the grass in the field, which is alive today and thrown into an oven tomorrow, how much more will he clothe you—you who have little faith?28If that's how God clothes the grass, which is in the field today and is thrown into the furnace tomorrow, how much more will He do for you--you of little faith?
"So stop concerning yourselves about what you will eat or what you will drink, and stop being distressed, 29Don't keep striving for what you should eat and what you should drink, and don't be anxious.
because it is the unbelievers who are concerned about all these things. Surely your Father knows that you need them! 30For the Gentile world eagerly seeks all these things, and your Father knows that you need them.
Instead, be concerned about his kingdom, and these things will be provided for you as well. 31"But seek His kingdom, and these things will be provided for you.
Stop being afraid, little flock, because your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom.32Don't be afraid, little flock, because your Father delights to give you the kingdom.
"Sell your possessions, and give the money to the poor. Make yourselves wallets that don't wear out—a dependable treasure in heaven, where no thief can get close and no moth can destroy anything. 33Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Make money-bags for yourselves that won't grow old, an inexhaustible treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.
Because where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."34For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
"You must keep your belts fastened and your lamps burning. 35"Be ready for service and have your lamps lit.
Be like people who are waiting for their master to return from a wedding. As soon as he arrives and knocks, they will open the door for him. 36You must be like people waiting for their master to return from the wedding banquet so that when he comes and knocks, they can open the door for him at once.
How blessed are those servants whom the master finds watching for him when he comes! I tell all of you with certainty, he himself will put on an apron, make them sit down at the table, and go around and serve them. 37Those slaves the master will find alert when he comes will be blessed. I assure you: He will get ready, have them recline at the table, then come and serve them.
How blessed they will be if their master comes in the middle of the night or near dawn and finds them awake!38If he comes in the middle of the night, or even near dawn, and finds them alert, those slaves are blessed.
But be sure of this: if the homeowner had known at what time the thief were coming, he would have watched and would not have let his house be broken into. 39But know this: If the homeowner had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into.
So be ready, because the Son of Man is coming at a time when you don't expect him."40You also be ready, because the Son of Man is coming at an hour that you do not expect.""
Peter asked, "Lord, are you telling this parable just for us or for everyone?"41Lord," Peter asked, "are You telling this parable to us or to everyone?"
The Lord said, "Who, then, is the faithful and careful servant manager whom his master will put in charge of giving all his other servants their share of food at the right time? 42The Lord said: "Who then is the faithful and sensible manager his master will put in charge of his household servants to give them their allotted food at the proper time?
How blessed is that servant whom his master finds doing this when he comes! 43That slave whose master finds him working when he comes will be rewarded.
I tell you with certainty, he will put him in charge of all his property. 44I tell you the truth: He will put him in charge of all his possessions.
But if that servant says to himself, 'My master is taking a long time to come back,' and begins to beat the other servants and to eat, drink, and get drunk, 45But if that slave says in his heart, My master is delaying his coming,' and starts to beat the male and female slaves, and to eat and drink and get drunk,
the master of that servant will come on a day when he doesn't expect him and at an hour that he doesn't know. Then his master will punish him severely and assign him a place with unfaithful people. 46that slave's master will come on a day he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know. He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers.
That servant who knew what his master wanted but didn't prepare himself or do what was wanted will receive a severe beating. 47And that slave who knew his master's will and didn't prepare himself or do it will be severely beaten.
But the servant who did things that deserved a beating without knowing it will receive a light beating. Much will be required from everyone to whom much has been given. But even more will be demanded from the one to whom much has been entrusted."48But the one who did not know and did things deserving of blows will be beaten lightly. Much will be required of everyone who has been given much. And even more will be expected of the one who has been entrusted with more.
"I've come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already ablaze! 49"I came to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already set ablaze!
I have a baptism to be baptized with, and what stress I am under until it's completed! 50But I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how it consumes Me until it is finished!
Do you think that I came to bring peace on earth? Not at all, I tell you, but rather division! 51Do you think that I came here to give peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division!
From now on, five people in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three. 52From now on, five in one household will be divided: three against two, and two against three.
They will be divided father against son, son against father, mother against daughter, daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law, and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law."53They will be divided, father against son, son against father, mother against daughter, daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law, and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law."
Then Jesus told the crowds, "When you see a cloud coming in from the west, you immediately say, 'There's going to be a storm,' and that's what happens. 54He also said to the crowds: "When you see a cloud rising in the west, right away you say, A storm is coming,' and so it does.
When you see a south wind blowing, you say, 'It's going to be hot,' and so it is. 55And when the south wind is blowing, you say, It's going to be a scorcher!' and it is.
You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky, yet you don't know how to interpret the present time?"56Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky, but why don't you know how to interpret this time?
"Why don't you judge for yourselves what is right? 57"Why don't you judge for yourselves what is right?
For example, when you go with your opponent in front of a ruler, do your best to settle with him on the way there. Otherwise, you will be dragged in front of the judge, and the judge will hand you over to an officer, and the officer will throw you into prison. 58As you are going with your adversary to the ruler, make an effort to settle with him on the way. Then he won't drag you before the judge, the judge hand you over to the bailiff, and the bailiff throw you into prison.
I tell you, you will never get out of there until you pay back the last penny!"59I tell you, you will never get out of there until you have paid the last cent."
