Deuteronomy 18
ISV Parallel KJV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
International Standard VersionKing James Bible
"The Levitical priests, the whole tribe of Levi, will not have a portion or an inheritance within Israel. Instead, they will eat the burnt offerings of the LORD, because that is their inheritance. 1The priests the Levites, and all the tribe of Levi, shall have no part nor inheritance with Israel: they shall eat the offerings of the LORD made by fire, and his inheritance.
But they will not have an inheritance among their relatives, because the LORD alone is their inheritance—as he promised them."2Therefore shall they have no inheritance among their brethren: the LORD is their inheritance, as he hath said unto them.
"A portion of what the people offer in sacrifice, whether cattle or sheep, is to be due the priests. They must set aside the shoulder, jowls, and stomach for the priest. 3And this shall be the priest's due from the people, from them that offer a sacrifice, whether it be ox or sheep; and they shall give unto the priest the shoulder, and the two cheeks, and the maw.
Give them the first gatherings of your grain, wine, oil, and wool from the shearing of your flock. 4The firstfruit also of thy corn, of thy wine, and of thine oil, and the first of the fleece of thy sheep, shalt thou give him.
For the LORD your God has chosen them and their descendants from among your tribes to stand and serve in the name of the LORD all their lives." 5For the LORD thy God hath chosen him out of all thy tribes, to stand to minister in the name of the LORD, him and his sons for ever.
"Any descendant of Levi who wishes to do so may come from any city or part of Israel where he resides to the place that the LORD will choose. 6And if a Levite come from any of thy gates out of all Israel, where he sojourned, and come with all the desire of his mind unto the place which the LORD shall choose;
There he may serve in the name of the LORD his God. Like his fellow descendants of Levi who stand there in the LORD's presence, 7Then he shall minister in the name of the LORD his God, as all his brethren the Levites do, which stand there before the LORD.
he may eat the same share as they do regardless of what he receives from his ancestral estate."8They shall have like portions to eat, beside that which cometh of the sale of his patrimony.
"When you enter the land that the LORD your God is about to give you, don't learn the detestable practices of those nations there. 9When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations.
There must never be found among you anyone who sacrifices his son or daughter in fire, practices divination, interprets omens, practices sorcery, 10There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch,
casts spells, or who is a medium, an occultist, or a necromancer. 11Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.
Whoever practices these things is detestable to the LORD, and the LORD your God will expel them before you because of these things. 12For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.
You must be completely faithful to the LORD your God, 13Thou shalt be perfect with the LORD thy God.
because those nations that you are about to dispossess listen to those who practice witchcraft and divination. But the LORD does not allow you to act this way."14For these nations, which thou shalt possess, hearkened unto observers of times, and unto diviners: but as for thee, the LORD thy God hath not suffered thee so to do.
"The LORD your God will raise up a prophet like me for you from among your relatives. You must listen to him, 15The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;
because this is what you asked from the LORD your God at Horeb when you were assembled together: 'Don't let us hear the voice of the LORD our God again, or even see this great fire—otherwise, we will die.'16According to all that thou desiredst of the LORD thy God in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God, neither let me see this great fire any more, that I die not.
"Then the LORD told me: 'What they have suggested is good. 17And the LORD said unto me, They have well spoken that which they have spoken.
I will raise up a prophet like you from among their relatives, and I will place my words in his mouth so that he may expound everything that I have commanded to them. 18I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.
But if someone will not listen to those words that the prophet speaks in my name, I will hold him accountable. 19And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.
Even then, if the prophet speaks presumptuously in my name, which I didn't authorize him to speak, or if he speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet must die.' 20But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die.
Now you may ask yourselves, 'How will we be able to discern that the LORD has not spoken?' 21And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken?
Whenever a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, and the oracle does not come about or the word is not fulfilled, then the LORD has not spoken it. The prophet will have spoken presumptuously, so you need not fear him."22When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.
