Jesus left that place and went back to his hometown, and his disciples followed him. 1Jesus went out from there and came into His hometown; and His disciples followed Him.
When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were utterly amazed. "Where did this man get all these things?" they asked. "What is this wisdom that has been given to him? What great miracles are being done by his hands! 2When the Sabbath came, He began to teach in the synagogue; and the many listeners were astonished, saying, "Where did this man get these things, and what is this wisdom given to Him, and such miracles as these performed by His hands?
This is the builder, the son of Mary, and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon, isn't it? His sisters are here with us, aren't they?" And they were offended by him.3"Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? Are not His sisters here with us?" And they took offense at Him.
Jesus had been telling them, "A prophet is without honor only in his hometown, among his relatives, and in his own home." 4Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and among his own relatives and in his own household."
He couldn't perform a miracle there except to lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. 5And He could do no miracle there except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them.
He was amazed at their unbelief. Then he went around to the villages and continued teaching.6And He wondered at their unbelief. And He was going around the villages teaching.
He called the Twelve and began to send them out two by two, giving them authority over unclean spirits. 7And He summoned the twelve and began to send them out in pairs, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits;
He instructed them to take nothing along on the trip except a walking stick—no bread, no traveling bag, nothing in their moneybag. 8and He instructed them that they should take nothing for their journey, except a mere staff-- no bread, no bag, no money in their belt--
They could wear sandals but not take along an extra shirt.9but to wear sandals; and He added, "Do not put on two tunics."
He told them repeatedly, "Whenever you go into a home, stay there until you leave that place. 10And He said to them, "Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave town.
If any place will not welcome you and the people refuse to listen to you, when you leave, shake its dust off your feet as a testimony against them." 11"Any place that does not receive you or listen to you, as you go out from there, shake the dust off the soles of your feet for a testimony against them."
So they went and preached that people should repent. 12They went out and preached that men should repent.
They also kept driving out many demons and anointing with oil many who were sick, and healing them.13And they were casting out many demons and were anointing with oil many sick people and healing them.
King Herod heard about this, because Jesus' name had become well-known. He was saying, "John the Baptist has been raised from the dead! That's why he is able to do these miracles."14And King Herod heard of it, for His name had become well known; and people were saying, "John the Baptist has risen from the dead, and that is why these miraculous powers are at work in Him."
Others were saying, "He is Elijah." Still others were saying, "He is a prophet like one of the other prophets."15But others were saying, "He is Elijah." And others were saying, "He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old."
But when Herod heard about it, he said, "John, whom I beheaded, has been raised," 16But when Herod heard of it, he kept saying, "John, whom I beheaded, has risen!"
because Herod himself had sent men who arrested John, bound him with chains, and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, whom Herod had married.17For Herod himself had sent and had John arrested and bound in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, because he had married her.
John had been telling Herod, "It's not lawful for you to have your brother's wife." 18For John had been saying to Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife."
So Herodias bore a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she couldn't do it 19Herodias had a grudge against him and wanted to put him to death and could not do so;
because Herod was afraid of John. He knew that John was a righteous and holy man, and so he protected him. Whenever he listened to John, he did much of what he said. In fact, he liked listening to him.20for Herod was afraid of John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he kept him safe. And when he heard him, he was very perplexed; but he used to enjoy listening to him.
An opportunity came during Herod's birthday celebration, when he gave a banquet for his top officials, military officers, and the most important people of Galilee. 21A strategic day came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his lords and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee;
When the daughter of Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests. So the king told the girl, "Ask me for anything you want, and I'll give it to you." 22and when the daughter of Herodias herself came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests; and the king said to the girl, "Ask me for whatever you want and I will give it to you."
He swore with an oath to her, "I'll give you anything you ask for, up to half of my kingdom."23And he swore to her, "Whatever you ask of me, I will give it to you; up to half of my kingdom."
So she went out and asked her mother, "What should I ask for?" Her mother replied, "The head of John the Baptist."24And she went out and said to her mother, "What shall I ask for?" And she said, "The head of John the Baptist."
Immediately the girl hurried back to the king with her request, "I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter."25Immediately she came in a hurry to the king and asked, saying, "I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter."
The king was deeply saddened, yet because of his oaths and his guests he was reluctant to refuse her. 26And although the king was very sorry, yet because of his oaths and because of his dinner guests, he was unwilling to refuse her.
So without delay the king sent a soldier and ordered him to bring John's head. The soldier went and beheaded him in prison. 27Immediately the king sent an executioner and commanded him to bring back his head. And he went and had him beheaded in the prison,
Then he brought John's head on a platter and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother. 28and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl; and the girl gave it to her mother.
When John's disciples heard about this, they came and carried off his body and laid it in a tomb.29When his disciples heard about this, they came and took away his body and laid it in a tomb.
The apostles gathered around Jesus and told him everything they had done and taught. 30The apostles gathered together with Jesus; and they reported to Him all that they had done and taught.
He told them, "Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest for a while," because so many people were coming and going that they didn't even have time to eat. 31And He said to them, "Come away by yourselves to a secluded place and rest a while." (For there were many people coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.)
So they went away in a boat to a deserted place by themselves. 32They went away in the boat to a secluded place by themselves.
But when many people saw them leave and recognized them, they hurried on foot from all the towns and arrived ahead of them. 33The people saw them going, and many recognized them and ran there together on foot from all the cities, and got there ahead of them.
When he got out of the boat, he saw a large crowd. He had compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd, and he began to teach them many things.34When Jesus went ashore, He saw a large crowd, and He felt compassion for them because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and He began to teach them many things.
When it was quite late, his disciples came to him and said, "This is a deserted place, and it's already late. 35When it was already quite late, His disciples came to Him and said, "This place is desolate and it is already quite late;
Send the crowds away so that they can go to the neighboring farms and villages and buy themselves something to eat."36send them away so that they may go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat."
But he answered them, "You give them something to eat." They asked him, "Should we go and buy 200 denarii worth of bread and give it to them to eat?"37But He answered them, "You give them something to eat!" And they said to Him, "Shall we go and spend two hundred denarii on bread and give them something to eat?"
He asked them, "How many loaves of bread do you have? Go and see." They found out and told him, "Five loaves and two fish."38And He said to them, "How many loaves do you have? Go look!" And when they found out, they said, "Five, and two fish."
Then he ordered them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass. 39And He commanded them all to sit down by groups on the green grass.
So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties. 40They sat down in groups of hundreds and of fifties.
Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and blessed them. Then he broke the loaves in pieces and kept giving them to his disciples to set before the people. He also divided the two fish among them all. 41And He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up toward heaven, He blessed the food and broke the loaves and He kept giving them to the disciples to set before them; and He divided up the two fish among them all.
All of them ate and were filled. 42They all ate and were satisfied,
Then the disciples picked up twelve baskets full of leftover bread and fish. 43and they picked up twelve full baskets of the broken pieces, and also of the fish.
There were 5,000 men who had eaten the loaves.44There were five thousand men who ate the loaves.
Jesus immediately had his disciples get into a boat and cross to Bethsaida ahead of him, while he sent the crowd away. 45Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side to Bethsaida, while He Himself was sending the crowd away.
After saying goodbye to them, he went up on a hillside to pray. 46After bidding them farewell, He left for the mountain to pray.
When evening had come, the boat was in the middle of the sea, while he was alone on the land. 47When it was evening, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and He was alone on the land.
He saw that his disciples were straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn he came to them, walking on the sea. He intended to go up right beside them, 48Seeing them straining at the oars, for the wind was against them, at about the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea; and He intended to pass by them.
but when they saw him walking on the sea, they thought it was a ghost and began to scream. 49But when they saw Him walking on the sea, they supposed that it was a ghost, and cried out;
All of them saw him and were terrified. Immediately he told them, "Have courage! It's me. Stop being afraid!"50for they all saw Him and were terrified. But immediately He spoke with them and said to them, "Take courage; it is I, do not be afraid."
Then he got into the boat with them, and the wind stopped blowing. The disciples were utterly astounded, 51Then He got into the boat with them, and the wind stopped; and they were utterly astonished,
because they didn't understand the significance of the loaves. Instead, their hearts were hardened.52for they had not gained any insight from the incident of the loaves, but their heart was hardened.
When they had crossed over, they came ashore at Gennesaret and anchored the boat. 53When they had crossed over they came to land at Gennesaret, and moored to the shore.
As soon as they got out of the boat, the people recognized Jesus.54When they got out of the boat, immediately the people recognized Him,
They ran all over the countryside and began carrying the sick on their mats to any place where they heard he was. 55and ran about that whole country and began to carry here and there on their pallets those who were sick, to the place they heard He was.
Wherever he went, whether into villages, towns, or farms, people would place their sick in the marketplaces and beg him to let them touch even the tassel of his garment, and everyone who touched it was healed.56Wherever He entered villages, or cities, or countryside, they were laying the sick in the market places, and imploring Him that they might just touch the fringe of His cloak; and as many as touched it were being cured.
