In response, Job said:1Then Job spoke again:
"How long do you intend to keep torturing me and trying to break me by what you're saying?2“How long will you torture me? How long will you try to crush me with your words?
Ten times you've tried to humiliate me! You're not ashamed to wrong me!3You have already insulted me ten times. You should be ashamed of treating me so badly.
Even if it's true that I've erred, my error only affects me.4Even if I have sinned, that is my concern, not yours.
If you really intend to vaunt yourselves over me, and make my problems the basis of your case against me,5You think you’re better than I am, using my humiliation as evidence of my sin.
then at least you must know that God has accused me of wrong, and trapped me with his net."6But it is God who has wronged me, capturing me in his net.
"Although I cried out 'Violence!' I received no answer; I cried for help, but there was no justice.7“I cry out, ‘Help!’ but no one answers me. I protest, but there is no justice.
He blocked my path, so I cannot pass; and he turned out the lights on my pathways.8God has blocked my way so I cannot move. He has plunged my path into darkness.
"He has stripped me of my honor; he has stolen the crown off my head!9He has stripped me of my honor and removed the crown from my head.
He is breaking me down on every side, and now it's too late for me; he has uprooted my hopes like a tree.10He has demolished me on every side, and I am finished. He has uprooted my hope like a fallen tree.
His anger burns against me; he regards me as his adversary.11His fury burns against me; he counts me as an enemy.
His troops march in a column against me, erecting their siege ramps against me; they surround my tent."12His troops advance. They build up roads to attack me. They camp all around my tent.
"My brothers are alienated from me; my acquaintances are estranged;13“My relatives stay far away, and my friends have turned against me.
my relatives have failed me; and my friends have abandoned me.14My family is gone, and my close friends have forgotten me.
Those who live in my house— and my maidservants, too!— treat me like a stranger; they think I'm a foreigner.15My servants and maids consider me a stranger. I am like a foreigner to them.
"I call to my servant, but he doesn't respond, even though I beg to him earnestly. 16When I call my servant, he doesn’t come; I have to plead with him!
My wife says my breath stinks; even my children say I smell bad!17My breath is repulsive to my wife. I am rejected by my own family.
Even little children hate me; when I get up, they mock me.18Even young children despise me. When I stand to speak, they turn their backs on me.
My closest friends detest me; even the ones I love have turned against me.19My close friends detest me. Those I loved have turned against me.
I'm a pile of skin and bones; I have barely escaped by the skin of my teeth."20I have been reduced to skin and bones and have escaped death by the skin of my teeth.
"Be gracious to me, be gracious to me, my friends, because God's hand has struck me.21“Have mercy on me, my friends, have mercy, for the hand of God has struck me.
Why are you chasing me, as God has been doing? Aren't you satisfied that I'm sick? 22Must you also persecute me, like God does? Haven’t you chewed me up enough?
If only my words were written down; if only they were inscribed in a book23“Oh, that my words could be recorded. Oh, that they could be inscribed on a monument,
using an iron stylus with lead for ink! Then they'd be engraved in rock forever.24carved with an iron chisel and filled with lead, engraved forever in the rock.
"As for me, I know that my Vindicator is alive; And he, the Last One, will take his stand on the soil. 25“But as for me, I know that my Redeemer lives, and he will stand upon the earth at last.
Even after my skin has been destroyed, clothed in my flesh I will see God,26And after my body has decayed, yet in my body I will see God!
whom I will see for myself. My own eyes will look at him— there won't be anyone else for me!— He is the culmination of my innermost desire."27I will see him for myself. Yes, I will see him with my own eyes. I am overwhelmed at the thought!
"When you're thinking about asking yourselves, 'How will we pursue him, since the root of the problem is with him?' 28“How dare you go on persecuting me, saying, ‘It’s his own fault’?
Make sure that you remain wary of God's sword, for God's wrath brings with it the sword of punishment, by which you'll know there's a judgment."29You should fear punishment yourselves, for your attitude deserves punishment. Then you will know that there is indeed a judgment.”
