A Psalm of Asaph. O God, the heathen are come into thine inheritance; thy holy temple have they defiled; they have laid Jerusalem on heaps.1God, the nations have invaded your inheritance, desecrated your holy temple, and turned Jerusalem into ruins.
The dead bodies of thy servants have they given to be meat unto the fowls of the heaven, the flesh of thy saints unto the beasts of the earth.2They gave the corpses of your servants to the birds of the sky for food, the flesh of your faithful ones to the beasts of the earth.
Their blood have they shed like water round about Jerusalem; and there was none to bury them.3They poured out their blood like water all around Jerusalem, and there was no one to bury them.
We are become a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and derision to them that are round about us.4We have become an object of reproach to our neighbors, a source of mockery and ridicule to those around us.
How long, LORD? wilt thou be angry for ever? shall thy jealousy burn like fire?5How long, LORD? Will you be angry forever? Will your jealousy keep burning like fire?
Pour out thy wrath upon the heathen that have not known thee, and upon the kingdoms that have not called upon thy name.6Pour out your wrath on the nations that don't acknowledge you, on the kingdoms that don't call on your name,
For they have devoured Jacob, and laid waste his dwelling place.7for they have devoured Jacob and devastated his homeland.
O remember not against us former iniquities: let thy tender mercies speedily prevent us: for we are brought very low.8Do not hold past iniquities against us; let your compassion come to us quickly, for we have become very weak.
Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of thy name: and deliver us, and purge away our sins, for thy name's sake.9God of our salvation, help us--for the glory of your name. Rescue us and atone for our sins, for your name's sake.
Wherefore should the heathen say, Where is their God? let him be known among the heathen in our sight by the revenging of the blood of thy servants which is shed.10Why should the nations ask, "Where is their God?" Before our eyes, let vengeance for the shed blood of your servants be known among the nations.
Let the sighing of the prisoner come before thee; according to the greatness of thy power preserve thou those that are appointed to die;11Let the groans of the prisoners reach you; according to your great power, preserve those condemned to die.
And render unto our neighbours sevenfold into their bosom their reproach, wherewith they have reproached thee, O Lord.12Pay back sevenfold to our neighbors the reproach they have hurled at you, Lord.
So we thy people and sheep of thy pasture will give thee thanks for ever: we will shew forth thy praise to all generations.13Then we, your people, the sheep of your pasture, will thank you forever; we will declare your praise to generation after generation.
