| 1And Israel took his journey with all that he had, and came to Beersheba, and offered sacrifices unto the God of his father Isaac. | 1Israel set out with all that he had and came to Beer-sheba, and he offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac. |
| 2And God spake unto Israel in the visions of the night, and said, Jacob, Jacob. And he said, Here am I. | 2That night God spoke to Israel in a vision: "Jacob, Jacob!" He said. And Jacob replied, "Here I am." |
| 3And he said, I am God, the God of thy father: fear not to go down into Egypt; for I will there make of thee a great nation: | 3God said, "I am God, the God of your father. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make you into a great nation there. |
| 4I will go down with thee into Egypt; and I will also surely bring thee up again: and Joseph shall put his hand upon thine eyes. | 4I will go down with you to Egypt, and I will also bring you back. Joseph will put his hands on your eyes." |
| 5And Jacob rose up from Beersheba: and the sons of Israel carried Jacob their father, and their little ones, and their wives, in the wagons which Pharaoh had sent to carry him. | 5Jacob left Beer-sheba. | 32And the men are shepherds, for their trade hath been to feed cattle; and they have brought their flocks, and their herds, and all that they have. | 32The men are shepherds; they also raise livestock. They have brought their sheep and cattle and all that they have. |
| 33And it shall come to pass, when Pharaoh shall call you, and shall say, What is your occupation? | 33When Pharaoh addresses you and asks, 'What is your occupation?' |
| 34That ye shall say, Thy servants' trade hath been about cattle from our youth even until now, both we, and also our fathers: that ye may dwell in the land of Goshen; for every shepherd is an abomination unto the Egyptians. | 34you are to say, 'Your servants, both we and our fathers, have raised livestock from our youth until now.' Then you will be allowed to settle in the land of Goshen, since all shepherds are abhorrent to Egyptians." |
