To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. Deliver me, O LORD, from the evil man: preserve me from the violent man;1For the choir director. A Davidic psalm. Rescue me, LORD, from evil men. Keep me safe from violent men
Which imagine mischiefs in their heart; continually are they gathered together for war.2who plan evil in their hearts. They stir up wars all day long.
They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent; adders' poison is under their lips. Selah.3They make their tongues as sharp as a snake's bite; viper's venom is under their lips. Selah
Keep me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from the violent man; who have purposed to overthrow my goings.4Protect me, LORD, from the clutches of the wicked. Keep me safe from violent men who plan to make me stumble.
The proud have hid a snare for me, and cords; they have spread a net by the wayside; they have set gins for me. Selah.5The proud hide a trap with ropes for me; they spread a net along the path and set snares for me. Selah
I said unto the LORD, Thou art my God: hear the voice of my supplications, O LORD.6I say to the LORD, "You are my God." Listen, LORD, to my cry for help.
O GOD the Lord, the strength of my salvation, thou hast covered my head in the day of battle.7Lord GOD, my strong Savior, You shield my head on the day of battle.
Grant not, O LORD, the desires of the wicked: further not his wicked device; lest they exalt themselves. Selah.8 LORD, do not grant the desires of the wicked; do not let them achieve their goals. Otherwise, they will become proud. Selah
As for the head of those that compass me about, let the mischief of their own lips cover them.9When those who surround me rise up, may the trouble their lips cause overwhelm them.
Let burning coals fall upon them: let them be cast into the fire; into deep pits, that they rise not up again.10Let hot coals fall on them. Let them be thrown into the fire, into the abyss, never again to rise.
Let not an evil speaker be established in the earth: evil shall hunt the violent man to overthrow him.11Do not let a slanderer stay in the land. Let evil relentlessly hunt down a violent man.
I know that the LORD will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and the right of the poor.12I know that the LORD upholds the just cause of the poor, justice for the needy.
Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto thy name: the upright shall dwell in thy presence.13Surely the righteous will praise Your name; the upright will live in Your presence.
