Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God,1Paul, a slave of Christ Jesus, called as an apostle and singled out for God's good news--
(Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,)2which He promised long ago through His prophets in the Holy Scriptures--
Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh;3concerning His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who was a descendant of David according to the flesh
And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:4and who has been declared to be the powerful Son of God by the resurrection from the dead according to the Spirit of holiness.
By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name:5We have received grace and apostleship through Him to bring about the obedience of faith among all the nations, on behalf of His name,
Among whom are ye also the called of Jesus Christ:6including yourselves who also belong to Jesus Christ by calling:
To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.7To all who are in Rome, loved by God, called as saints. Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world.8First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you because the news of your faith is being reported in all the world.
For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers;9For God, whom I serve with my spirit in telling the good news about His Son, is my witness that I constantly mention you,
Making request, if by any means now at length I might have a prosperous journey by the will of God to come unto you.10always asking in my prayers that if it is somehow in God's will, I may now at last succeed in coming to you.
For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established;11For I want very much to see you, so I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you,
That is, that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me.12that is, to be mutually encouraged by each other's faith, both yours and mine.
Now I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that oftentimes I purposed to come unto you, (but was let hitherto,) that I might have some fruit among you also, even as among other Gentiles.13Now I want you to know, brothers, that I often planned to come to you (but was prevented until now) in order that I might have a fruitful ministry among you, just as among the rest of the Gentiles.
I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians; both to the wise, and to the unwise.14I am obligated both to Greeks and barbarians, both to the wise and the foolish.
So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also.15So I am eager to preach the good news to you also who are in Rome.
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.16For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is God's power for salvation to everyone who believes, first to the Jew, and also to the Greek.
For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.17For in it God's righteousness is revealed from faith to faith, just as it is written: The righteous will live by faith.
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;18For God's wrath is revealed from heaven against all godlessness and unrighteousness of people who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth,
Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.19since what can be known about God is evident among them, because God has shown it to them.
For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:20For His invisible attributes, that is, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen since the creation of the world, being understood through what He has made. As a result, people are without excuse.
Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.21For though they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God or show gratitude. Instead, their thinking became nonsense, and their senseless minds were darkened.
Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,22Claiming to be wise, they became fools
And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.23and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man, birds, four-footed animals, and reptiles.
Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:24Therefore God delivered them over in the cravings of their hearts to sexual impurity, so that their bodies were degraded among themselves.
Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.25They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served something created instead of the Creator, who is praised forever. Amen.
For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:26This is why God delivered them over to degrading passions. For even their females exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones.
And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.27The males in the same way also left natural relations with females and were inflamed in their lust for one another. Males committed shameless acts with males and received in their own persons the appropriate penalty of their error.
And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;28And because they did not think it worthwhile to acknowledge God, God delivered them over to a worthless mind to do what is morally wrong.
Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,29They are filled with all unrighteousness, evil, greed, and wickedness. They are full of envy, murder, quarrels, deceit, and malice. They are gossips,
Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,30slanderers, God-haters, arrogant, proud, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents,
Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:31undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, and unmerciful.
Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.32Although they know full well God's just sentence--that those who practice such things deserve to die--they not only do them, but even applaud others who practice them.
