Matthew 12
KJV Parallel NLT [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT GRK]
King James BibleNew Living Translation
At that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn; and his disciples were an hungred, and began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat.1At about that time Jesus was walking through some grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry, so they began breaking off some heads of grain and eating them.
But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the sabbath day.2But some Pharisees saw them do it and protested, “Look, your disciples are breaking the law by harvesting grain on the Sabbath.”
But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was an hungred, and they that were with him;3Jesus said to them, “Haven’t you read in the Scriptures what David did when he and his companions were hungry?
How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the shewbread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, but only for the priests?4 He went into the house of God, and he and his companions broke the law by eating the sacred loaves of bread that only the priests are allowed to eat.
Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless?5 And haven’t you read in the law of Moses that the priests on duty in the Temple may work on the Sabbath?
But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple.6 I tell you, there is one here who is even greater than the Temple!
But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless.7 But you would not have condemned my innocent disciples if you knew the meaning of this Scripture: ‘I want you to show mercy, not offer sacrifices.’
For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day.8 For the Son of Man is Lord, even over the Sabbath!” Jesus Heals on the Sabbath
And when he was departed thence, he went into their synagogue:9Then Jesus went over to their synagogue,
And, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days? that they might accuse him.10where he noticed a man with a deformed hand. The Pharisees asked Jesus, “Does the law permit a person to work by healing on the Sabbath?” (They were hoping he would say yes, so they could bring charges against him.)
And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out?11And he answered, “If you had a sheep that fell into a well on the Sabbath, wouldn’t you work to pull it out? Of course you would.
How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days.12 And how much more valuable is a person than a sheep! Yes, the law permits a person to do good on the Sabbath.”
Then saith he to the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it forth; and it was restored whole, like as the other.13Then he said to the man, “Hold out your hand.” So the man held out his hand, and it was restored, just like the other one!
Then the Pharisees went out, and held a council against him, how they might destroy him.14Then the Pharisees called a meeting to plot how to kill Jesus. Jesus, God’s Chosen Servant
But when Jesus knew it, he withdrew himself from thence: and great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all;15But Jesus knew what they were planning. So he left that area, and many people followed him. He healed all the sick among them,
And charged them that they should not make him known:16but he warned them not to reveal who he was.
That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,17This fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah concerning him:
Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles.18“Look at my Servant, whom I have chosen. He is my Beloved, who pleases me. I will put my Spirit upon him, and he will proclaim justice to the nations.
He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets.19He will not fight or shout or raise his voice in public.
A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory.20He will not crush the weakest reed or put out a flickering candle. Finally he will cause justice to be victorious.
And in his name shall the Gentiles trust.21And his name will be the hope of all the world.” Jesus and the Prince of Demons
Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw.22Then a demon-possessed man, who was blind and couldn’t speak, was brought to Jesus. He healed the man so that he could both speak and see.
And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David?23The crowd was amazed and asked, “Could it be that Jesus is the Son of David, the Messiah?”
But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils.24But when the Pharisees heard about the miracle, they said, “No wonder he can cast out demons. He gets his power from Satan, the prince of demons.”
And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand:25Jesus knew their thoughts and replied, “Any kingdom divided by civil war is doomed. A town or family splintered by feuding will fall apart.
And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand?26 And if Satan is casting out Satan, he is divided and fighting against himself. His own kingdom will not survive.
And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out? therefore they shall be your judges.27 And if I am empowered by Satan, what about your own exorcists? They cast out demons, too, so they will condemn you for what you have said.
But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you.28 But if I am casting out demons by the Spirit of God, then the Kingdom of God has arrived among you.
Or else how can one enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house.29 For who is powerful enough to enter the house of a strong man and plunder his goods? Only someone even stronger—someone who could tie him up and then plunder his house.
He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad.30 “Anyone who isn’t with me opposes me, and anyone who isn’t working with me is actually working against me.
Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.31 “So I tell you, every sin and blasphemy can be forgiven—except blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, which will never be forgiven.
And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.32 Anyone who speaks against the Son of Man can be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven, either in this world or in the world to come.
Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit.33 “A tree is identified by its fruit. If a tree is good, its fruit will be good. If a tree is bad, its fruit will be bad.
O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.34 You brood of snakes! How could evil men like you speak what is good and right? For whatever is in your heart determines what you say.
A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.35 A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart.
But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.36 And I tell you this, you must give an account on judgment day for every idle word you speak.
For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.37 The words you say will either acquit you or condemn you.” The Sign of Jonah
Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee.38One day some teachers of religious law and Pharisees came to Jesus and said, “Teacher, we want you to show us a miraculous sign to prove your authority.”
But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas:39But Jesus replied, “Only an evil, adulterous generation would demand a miraculous sign; but the only sign I will give them is the sign of the prophet Jonah.
For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.40 For as Jonah was in the belly of the great fish for three days and three nights, so will the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights.
The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.41 “The people of Nineveh will stand up against this generation on judgment day and condemn it, for they repented of their sins at the preaching of Jonah. Now someone greater than Jonah is here—but you refuse to repent.
The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.42 The queen of Sheba will also stand up against this generation on judgment day and condemn it, for she came from a distant land to hear the wisdom of Solomon. Now someone greater than Solomon is here—but you refuse to listen.
When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none.43 “When an evil spirit leaves a person, it goes into the desert, seeking rest but finding none.
Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished.44 Then it says, ‘I will return to the person I came from.’ So it returns and finds its former home empty, swept, and in order.
Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.45 Then the spirit finds seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they all enter the person and live there. And so that person is worse off than before. That will be the experience of this evil generation.” The True Family of Jesus
While he yet talked to the people, behold, his mother and his brethren stood without, desiring to speak with him.46As Jesus was speaking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, asking to speak to him.
Then one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with thee.47Someone told Jesus, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, and they want to speak to you.”
But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren?48Jesus asked, “Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?”
And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren!49Then he pointed to his disciples and said, “Look, these are my mother and brothers.
For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.50 Anyone who does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother!”
