Now Abraham took another wife, whose name was Keturah.1Now Abraham had taken another wife, named Keturah,
She bore to him Zimran and Jokshan and Medan and Midian and Ishbak and Shuah.2and she bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.
Jokshan became the father of Sheba and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were Asshurim and Letushim and Leummim.3Jokshan was the father of Sheba and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were the Asshurites, the Letushites, and the Leummites.
The sons of Midian were Ephah and Epher and Hanoch and Abida and Eldaah. All these were the sons of Keturah.4The sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. All these were descendants of Keturah.
Now Abraham gave all that he had to Isaac;5Abraham left everything he owned to Isaac.
but to the sons of his concubines, Abraham gave gifts while he was still living, and sent them away from his son Isaac eastward, to the land of the east.6But while he was still alive, Abraham gave gifts to the sons of his concubines and sent them away from his son Isaac to the land of the east.
These are all the years of Abraham's life that he lived, one hundred and seventy-five years.7Abraham lived a total of 175 years.
Abraham breathed his last and died in a ripe old age, an old man and satisfied with life; and he was gathered to his people.8And at a ripe old age he breathed his last and died, old and contented, and was gathered to his people.
Then his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, facing Mamre,9His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah near Mamre, in the field of Ephron son of Zohar the Hittite.
the field which Abraham purchased from the sons of Heth; there Abraham was buried with Sarah his wife.10This was the field that Abraham had bought from the Hittites. Abraham was buried there with his wife Sarah.
It came about after the death of Abraham, that God blessed his son Isaac; and Isaac lived by Beer-lahai-roi.11After Abraham’s death, God blessed his son Isaac, who lived near Beer-lahai-roi.
Now these are the records of the generations of Ishmael, Abraham's son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah's maid, bore to Abraham;12This is the account of Abraham’s son Ishmael, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah’s maidservant, bore to Abraham.
and these are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, in the order of their birth: Nebaioth, the firstborn of Ishmael, and Kedar and Adbeel and Mibsam13These are the names of the sons of Ishmael in the order of their birth: Nebaioth the firstborn of Ishmael, then Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam,
and Mishma and Dumah and Massa,14Mishma, Dumah, Massa,
Hadad and Tema, Jetur, Naphish and Kedemah.15Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah.
These are the sons of Ishmael and these are their names, by their villages, and by their camps; twelve princes according to their tribes.16These were the sons of Ishmael, and these were their names by their villages and encampments—twelve princes of their tribes.
These are the years of the life of Ishmael, one hundred and thirty-seven years; and he breathed his last and died, and was gathered to his people.17Ishmael lived a total of 137 years. Then he breathed his last and died, and was gathered to his people.
They settled from Havilah to Shur which is east of Egypt as one goes toward Assyria; he settled in defiance of all his relatives.18Ishmael’s descendants settled from Havilah to Shur, which is near the border of Egypt as you go toward Asshur. And they lived in hostility toward all their brothers.
Now these are the records of the generations of Isaac, Abraham's son: Abraham became the father of Isaac;19This is the account of Abraham’s son Isaac. Abraham became the father of Isaac,
and Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean of Paddan-aram, the sister of Laban the Aramean, to be his wife.20and Isaac was forty years old when he married Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean from Paddan-aram and the sister of Laban the Aramean.
Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren; and the LORD answered him and Rebekah his wife conceived.21Later, Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren. And the LORD heard his prayer, and his wife Rebekah conceived.
But the children struggled together within her; and she said, "If it is so, why then am I this way?" So she went to inquire of the LORD.22But the children inside her struggled with each other, and she said, “Why is this happening to me?” So Rebekah went to inquire of the LORD,
The LORD said to her, "Two nations are in your womb; And two peoples will be separated from your body; And one people shall be stronger than the other; And the older shall serve the younger."23and He declared to her: “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.”
When her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.24When her time came to give birth, there were indeed twins in her womb.
Now the first came forth red, all over like a hairy garment; and they named him Esau.25The first one came out red, covered with hair like a fur coat; so they named him Esau.
Afterward his brother came forth with his hand holding on to Esau's heel, so his name was called Jacob; and Isaac was sixty years old when she gave birth to them.26After this, his brother came out grasping Esau’s heel; so he was named Jacob. And Isaac was sixty years old when the twins were born.
When the boys grew up, Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the field, but Jacob was a peaceful man, living in tents.27When the boys grew up, Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the field, while Jacob was a quiet man who stayed at home.
Now Isaac loved Esau, because he had a taste for game, but Rebekah loved Jacob.28Because Isaac had a taste for wild game, he loved Esau; but Rebekah loved Jacob.
When Jacob had cooked stew, Esau came in from the field and he was famished;29One day, while Jacob was cooking some stew, Esau came in from the field and was famished.
and Esau said to Jacob, "Please let me have a swallow of that red stuff there, for I am famished." Therefore his name was called Edom.30He said to Jacob, “Let me eat some of that red stew, for I am famished.” (That is why he was also called Edom.)
But Jacob said, "First sell me your birthright."31“First sell me your birthright,” Jacob replied.
Esau said, "Behold, I am about to die; so of what use then is the birthright to me?"32“Look,” said Esau, “I am about to die, so what good is a birthright to me?”
And Jacob said, "First swear to me"; so he swore to him, and sold his birthright to Jacob.33“Swear to me first,” Jacob said. So Esau swore to Jacob and sold him the birthright.
Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew; and he ate and drank, and rose and went on his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright.34Then Jacob gave some bread and lentil stew to Esau, who ate and drank and then got up and went away. Thus Esau despised his birthright.
