For the choir director. A Psalm of David. Hear my voice, O God, in my complaint; Preserve my life from dread of the enemy.1For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. Hear, O God, my voice of complaint; preserve my life from dread of the enemy.
Hide me from the secret counsel of evildoers, From the tumult of those who do iniquity,2Hide me from the scheming of the wicked, from the mob of workers of iniquity,
Who have sharpened their tongue like a sword. They aimed bitter speech as their arrow,3who sharpen their tongues like swords and aim their bitter words like arrows,
To shoot from concealment at the blameless; Suddenly they shoot at him, and do not fear.4ambushing the innocent in seclusion, shooting suddenly, without fear.
They hold fast to themselves an evil purpose; They talk of laying snares secretly; They say, "Who can see them?"5They hold fast to their evil purpose; they speak of hiding their snares. “Who will see them?” they say.
They devise injustices, saying, "We are ready with a well-conceived plot"; For the inward thought and the heart of a man are deep.6They devise injustice and say, “We have perfected a secret plan.” For the inner man and the heart are mysterious.
But God will shoot at them with an arrow; Suddenly they will be wounded.7But God will shoot them with arrows; suddenly they will be wounded.
So they will make him stumble; Their own tongue is against them; All who see them will shake the head.8They will be made to stumble, their own tongues turned against them. All who see will shake their heads.
Then all men will fear, And they will declare the work of God, And will consider what He has done.9Then all mankind will fear and proclaim the work of God; so they will ponder what He has done.
The righteous man will be glad in the LORD and will take refuge in Him; And all the upright in heart will glory.10Let the righteous rejoice in the LORD and take refuge in Him; let all the upright in heart exult.
