| 1Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the Apostle and High Priest of our confession; | 1Therefore, holy brothers and companions in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession; |
| 2He was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as Moses also was in all His house. | 2He was faithful to the One who appointed Him, just as Moses was in all God's household. |
| 3For He has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, by just so much as the builder of the house has more honor than the house. | 3For Jesus is considered worthy of more glory than Moses, just as the builder has more honor than the house. |
| 4For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God. | 4Now every house is built by someone, but the One who built everything is God. |
| 5Now Moses was faithful in all His house as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken later; | 5Moses was faithful as a servant in all God's household, as a testimony to what would be said in the future. |
| 6but Christ was faithful as a Son over His house-- whose house we are, if we hold fast our confidence and the boast of our hope firm until the end. | 6But Christ was faithful as a Son over His household. And we are that household if we hold on to the courage and the confidence of our hope. |
| 7Therefore, just as the Holy Spirit says, "TODAY IF YOU HEAR HIS VOICE, | 7Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says: Today, if you hear His voice, |
| 8DO NOT HARDEN YOUR HEARTS AS WHEN THEY PROVOKED ME, AS IN THE DAY OF TRIAL IN THE WILDERNESS, | 8do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, on the day of testing in the wilderness, |
| 9WHERE YOUR FATHERS TRIED Me BY TESTING Me, AND SAW MY WORKS FOR FORTY YEARS. | 9where your fathers tested Me, tried Me, and saw My works |
| 10"THEREFORE I WAS ANGRY WITH THIS GENERATION, AND SAID, 'THEY ALWAYS GO ASTRAY IN THEIR HEART, AND THEY DID NOT KNOW MY WAYS'; | 10for 40 years. Therefore I was provoked with that generation and said, "They always go astray in their hearts, and they have not known My ways." |
| 11AS I SWORE IN MY WRATH, 'THEY SHALL NOT ENTER MY REST.'" | 11So I swore in My anger, "They will not enter My rest." |
| 12Take care, brethren, that there not be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart that falls away from the living God. | 12Watch out, brothers, so that there won't be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart that departs from the living God. |
| 13But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called "Today," so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. | 13But encourage each other daily, while it is still called today, so that none of you is hardened by sin's deception. |
| 14For we have become partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our assurance firm until the end, | 14For we have become companions of the Messiah if we hold firmly until the end the reality that we had at the start. |
| 15while it is said, "TODAY IF YOU HEAR HIS VOICE, DO NOT HARDEN YOUR HEARTS, AS WHEN THEY PROVOKED ME." | 15As it is said: Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion. |
| 16For who provoked Him when they had heard? Indeed, did not all those who came out of Egypt led by Moses? | 16For who heard and rebelled? Wasn't it really all who came out of Egypt under Moses? |
| 17And with whom was He angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? | 17And who was He provoked with for 40 years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? |
| 18And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who were disobedient? | 18And who did He swear to that they would not enter His rest, if not those who disobeyed? |
| 19So we see that they were not able to enter because of unbelief. | 19So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief. |
